Adele Covers Aretha Franklin’s ‘A Natural Woman’ On VH1 Unplugged

Published: Friday 18th Feb 2011 by Sam

Soulful songbird Adele is riding high on the charts with her sophomore set ’21’. So as to further promote the project, the Brit recently filmed a VH1 Unplugged special.

Though the show will air in its entirety on March 3rd on VH1.com, a preview performance has been made available in the form of her cover of Aretha Franklin‘s classic ‘(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman’.

Check out how the singer fared below…

Expectedly not a patch on Franklin’s version, Adele still more than held her own – reaffirming why her buzz is much more than smoke and mirrors. It’s all warranted. Great performance.

    Nice rendition but it hasn’t topped MJB’s cover of the song.

    Very good. I´ve discovered her this last week. Well I knew her already but you know what I mean. After watching an untalented b**** new video this is like…MUSIC still exists!

    Yaaaaawn!!!! White chics never pass singing black soul. Karaoke at best. Other than Aretha, Whitney and Mary J did it the best. Craptastic at best. Her voice gets annoying and overdone when she tries too hard. Does not sound natural at all. Smoke and mirrors for real. Stick to singing white songs. SMH.

    Not in love with her rendition of Natural Woman, but Adele is still an awesome talent!

    Go play in traffic, you racist p****.

    Anyway, this isn’t the best version of this song, but she still did a fantastic job. I can’t wait to see the performance in its entirety, because Adele always kills it. So glad that real, unaffected talent is also achieving mainstream success!

    Anyone who is singing from the heart is singing from the soul. I like Adele.

    Adele did a great job! I don’t care what anybody says. Anybody can have “soul” in their voice just like Teena Marie or Amy Winehouse. As long as when they sing you can feel the beauty that’s what only matters.

    @TRUTH

    LOL why is the chip on your shoulder so big? Did your man leave you for a white girl? Yes, there are white folk who sing music that is traditionally associated with roots which come from black artists. There are also black folk who sing music that is traditionally associated with roots which come from white people.

    There is no such thing as “black soul”. There is a soul music, and if someone is singing from the soul, then it is soul music.

    In response to your comment “karaoke at best”, no darling. Karaoke is when someone attempts to sing the song the same way it has been done. As Adele has applied her own voice and style to this, it is called a RENDITION, and a good one at that too.

    SHE ALWAYS BRINGS TEAS TO MY EYES… I JUST LOVE THIS WOMAN!! I SEE NOTHING BUT A POWERFUL SUCCESSFUL TALENTED LADY.

    It’s so funny that there is a race conversation going on in concern with this song. Obviously “truth” doesn’t know his/her music history. See, Carol King (a white woman) WROTE and recorded “Natural Woman” first…

  19. stan February 18, 2011

    overall good, but some parts were very flat, imo.

  20. Scott February 18, 2011

    Respect to Adele she does have a beautiful soulful voice and I wish more black singers would leave pop music alone and use their beautiful voices for Soul and RnB.Yes I am talking about Keri Hilson, Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke, Melanie Fiona.
    Black music needs to start setting the bar higher and improve.

  21. Ariana February 18, 2011

    I really didn’t like this peformance, I actually find it a bit boring & her raspy voice is annoying sometimes.
    Even Celine Dion’s screamings on Divas Live were better than this. Stick to your songs, Adele.

    She did great and is an amazing tallent and artist, i still prefer Joss Stone’s version which she performed in front of Aretha…

    Joss Stone is one of the best soul vvoices ever imo, she slayed it. 😀

    LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE HER. ALL VOICE NO NEED FOR DISTRACTING VISUALS

  24. sierra February 19, 2011

    @Truth

    how do you feel about Teena Marie?

  25. i’m a s&m billy goat (tie me up, tie me down) February 19, 2011

    They removed it before I could see it …dang! I love Adele she has an amazing voice and is an amazing talent. It’s nice to listen to an artist who does not have to take off her clothes or do something strange in order to sell CD’s!

  26. The Judge February 19, 2011

    @Timmi is back. Ahem, I mean Trent. Another one of his multiple personalities. SMH.

    @ Truth

    Bless your heart. You have NO talent and now you’re taking it out on what’s real out there. Eat your sorrows away, baby. 😉
