Feeling the heat from the backlash over her ‘Man Down’ video, Rihanna phoned in to BET’s 106 & Park moments ago to further defend herself. According to the model, the visual for the Anthony Mandler directed clip is empowering for women the world over.

All gags aside, the arguments of those slamming the clip for being morally incorrect are reaching to say the least. That said, it’s easy to see why Ms. Fenty is coming under fire for something other’s would have released unscathed.
Like most fast food music artists, Rihanna’s output represents little more than cheap escapism. What’s more, her racy stage antics and all-round lack of talent don’t allow for her to be taken seriously as a role model (something she incessantly claims she doesn’t want to be). Hence, why now, many are asking, should RiRi be preaching tales of social issues? As good a cause as it is, it’s arguable that that is simply not her calling and is ultimately contrived.
Still, I don’t get the drama. For an act, who is otherwise empty, she should be commended for ‘going there’ or at least trying to.
