It’s been a so-so few years for Mary J. Blige. While her albums have sold solidly, each release seems to spurn fewer and fewer hits. Hoping to turn the tide with her forthcoming ‘My Life II’ LP, the Queen of Hip-Hop/Soul has gone back to basics. Case, point, example, ‘Miss Me With That’.

Produced Harvey Mason, the flavoursome mid-tempo reunites Blige with her core R&B roots; doing so without compromising the contemporary flare which will ensure it play in today’s age. Piano and drum led, the production on the cut is lush too. Perhaps not as instant as it need be (for her to secure a hit), there exists no reason why this wouldn’t perform well on the R&B/UAC chart should it be given the single treatment.

MARY J! I have not been this excited with anticipation since The Breakthrough dropped. Although I believe that both Growing Pains and Stronger with Each Tear were strong and formidable R&B/Pop collections. Each with hidden gems that top 40 charts simply do not respect i.e. Talk To Me from Growing Pains and Hood Love from Stronger With Each Tear.
I am also of the opinion that the Stronger … CD fell victim to bootleg sales and that is why it did not go platinum. If there were a way to count or guestimate bootleg sales, Mary would probably be at 70-75 million worldwide overall.
Miss Me With That from the yet to be released My Life II is solid. I liked it immediately (unlike Lookin for Someone to Love Me which had to grow on me). Folks keep coming after our Queen but they will NEVER catch her with her guard down. She is too hood for that!
