Watch: Missy Elliott- Behind The Music

Published: Thursday 30th Jun 2011 by David

Remaining one of the most respected artists to debut in the last 20 years, Missy Elliott‘s story is surprisingly one that many are not too familiar. Yesterday, her episode of the series ‘Behind The Music‘ aired and shone a new light on the performer’s experiences. Heartbreak and all.

Check it out…

With Lil Kim‘s legacy arguably in shatters over losing her one sided war with Nicki Minaj and  Foxy Brown‘s latest effort evoking laughter and disappointment from even her most loyal of fans, Missy Elliott has been able to uphold the respect she has demanded since her debut.

Battling horrific experiences to become a Black crossover icon in the 90s, her innovative manner and approach to her art will be sure to capture the hearts of fans once her new album sees the light of day.

Here’s to hoping it matches the critical and commercial success of her previous releases.

MISSY is really the one that made female rappers mainstream and cool.If anyone should be proclaimed the Queen of Hip Hop it’s her.

  7. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) June 30, 2011

Why do you always have to shade somebody in every post??? Lil Kim hasn’t lost her battle with Nicki because she hasn’t come out with an album yet. And Foxy’s song was recorded in a crap studio, so the audio was awful, but the lyrics weren’t bad AT ALL. How can you judge her based on one song?? *plays BK Anthem

  14. AWFUL June 30, 2011

That was interesting, her childhood was so tough. Her weight and how she dealt with Aaliyah’s death was inspiring.

This woman is a hip hop musical genius. She is the QUEEN OF HIP HOP. I’m really sorry all you up and comers Nicki, Lil Mama. Missy shits on all of you.

  17. nate June 30, 2011

I grew up with Missy. I remember her video stayed in heavy rotation all over MTV. She had white kids from Michigan singing her tracks, no other female had that power. She is the queen of hip hop! Missy had the power to be mainstream, but still individual! This doesn’t exist anymore.

  18. Chris June 30, 2011

Cant wait 4 her and alja jackson to release their new song prettiest girl it’s epic

  19. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) June 30, 2011

(I liked Broken Silence as well, not as much as her debut, but it was solid *plays Na Na Be Like)

  25. aisha aguilera keys June 30, 2011

    @ ASAP

I LOVED Broken Silence, it’s my fave FB album! But I also liked the mixtape Brooklyn Don Diva, matter of fact FB has never decieved me w/ an album, I’ve liked her since her beginnings. She’s one of my faves. I’m just sad that she never got enough publicity compared to Kim (I know she went to jail A LOT), so she never got as much sucess and recognition.

  26. luv missy June 30, 2011

Why is it that everytime I come to this site theres always shade towards kim??? this had NOTHING to do with kim and she has not lost any battle with nicki. how can she lose when she hasnt even had a single out??? this blog STAYS LOSING.

  27. truciebedford June 30, 2011

wow an amazing story. we really don’t factor in these celebs normal lives and what they have to deal with. I graduated in 2000 and Missy is listed as my fav artist then. lol I even rocked a Missy inspired hairdo for my senior pics. This guy James started calling me Missy. Ten years later she’s still one of the best to ever do it. Funny how we forget as time passes but it’s always good to have someone remind you. This was a great reminder and hopefully we don’t ever forget because she will go down a hip hop icon and legend.
