As has become standard fare for the publishers of Billboard magazine, the first week of July marks the release of the ‘mid-year’ chart. This year’s chart, designed to detail the best album and single sales of the year up to its halfway mark, reveals little surprises other than female domination.

With 2011 half-over, Adele‘s “21” and Katy Perry‘s “E.T.” (featuring Kanye West), reign as the year’s biggest selling album and digital song in the U.S., respectively — shifting 2,517,000 and 4,120,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Nicki Minaj‘s “Pink Friday” is the ninth biggest seller so far in ’11 — the first time a female hip-hop set has been this high since Lauryn Hill‘s “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” was No. 6 halfway through 1999.
With releases from Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna (re-release), Monica, and Mariah Carey looking to join the list, it will be interesting to see who ends on top. The Christmas buying season could see a great shift in the year-end numbers of any of the aforementioned starlets.
Beyonce, Mariah, Rihanna, will be on the list….not sure about Monica. We will see how her album sells. She delivers good singles but the sales are kinda becoming mediocre….
Adele is going to clean up at the Grammys next year. She lost Best Artist (I think) to Lady Gaga…so they will reward her with some more nods

By what standards are you comparing it to? Considering that his peers(Mike Posner, Jason Derulo, Taio Cruz, Ne-yo, Bruno Mars) have not gone gold except Bruno, I’d say it’s a success. Bruno and Chris are the only male singers cracking the top 10 this year.
And you can’t call an album a flop because it doesn’t go platinum in the first 4 months. The Fame didn’t sell good in its first 4 months, but it’s sold over 12million world wide to date. Cannibal just got it’s gold certificate in June and it was released in December.

Thanks. I just think that certain stars such as Winehouse, Duffy & Boyle etc are just momentary though, because none of them have lasted for too long.
