I was at Essence and Usher is the reason why I’m just getting up, his set ended at 2 in mornin’ ! I’m not complainin cause he brought down the Superdome with his show and yes he is an Icon and is well on his way to legendary status. Chris Brown can sing, dance, write, produce, act and he brings a new sensibility to art and fashion that Usher just doesn’t have. The only reason Chris Brown isn’t selling out Arena’s is because of the domestic violence towards Rihanna. Prior to that (and by the age of 19) Chris Brown was ranked by Billboard Magazine as Male Artist of the Year twice, joining the ranks of R. Kelly, Eminem, and 50 Cent. Usher had a diamond selling album when albums actually sold that much, but the record industry is tanking due to downloading. Chris Brown would be selling tons more albums if free downloading wasn’t so easy to do. As far as Chris Brown imitating Michael Jackson, all you have to do is peep the introduction to the “She Ain’t You” video to know that Chris proudly stands on Michael’s shoulders and admits it every chance he gets. Usher is a great artist, but he doesn’t have the dancing feet to fill Michael Jackson’s shoes no matter how much he is begging the audience to let him during his concerts. Besides the lil drama with his ex wife Tameka, Usher isn’t as talked about as he was when he was with Chilli. No one really cares about his personal life anymore & you don’t hear about him as much in the media & blogs. Like ‘4’, ‘Here I Stand’ was full of a bunch of ballads, it was more slow & mature sound than what he had previously released. Besides ‘Love in the Club’ there were no dance/club records on the album that’s why people called it boring like they are calling Bey’s ‘4’ album. It didn’t come close to touching the sales of ‘Confessions’ & was quickly forgotten.
For the most part fans & critics panned ‘Here I Stand’ & after ‘Confessions’ it was commercially his worst album to date. Bey’s ‘4’ album is getting mixed reviews, she hasn’t had a certified yet & the sales don’t look like they are going to be as good as her previous albums, especially her first week sales. So for Usher to go in that direction wouldn’t be good for his career cause even though I LOVED Bey’s ‘4’ album, it just doesn’t look like it will be a hit as far as sales or hits.
I kind of think that Bey may be ready to retire with her ‘4’ album. When you listen to songs like ‘I Was Here’ and the way she talks in all her recent intervirews it’s like she is saying she is ready to bow out of the game. I’m not saying she will never record music again or tour, but she may be ready to settle down & make having a family her proirity now.
I don’t think Usher is ready to retire yet. He already announced that he is going in a new direction for his next album so he’s clearly going forward even though he is getting up there in age. No matter how many sales or awards he has over these younger artist he is STILL gonna have to compete with them. Period!
I am eager to hear his new ‘revolutionary pop’ sounds that he supposed to have on his next album, but I still don’t like the word ‘pop & Usher’ in the same sentence. To me he will always be that ‘My Way’, ‘8701’ & ‘Confessions’ Usher cause I think that’s where he shines. His few pop hits can’t touch his r&b hits!
I still don’t think Usher has earned the title of ‘legend’ yet. People need to realize that sales don’t make you a legend. SMH.

IMO, an icon is someone that has A CERTAIN IMPACT with his style of music and image and that has a large back catalogue and a bunch of awards
A LEGEND is someone that CHANGES/RE-INVENTS music and influences EVERYONE
Usher, provided that he works hard and stop caring about sales and fame, may get there in time, but not yet…AN ICON FOR NOW

Chris Brown is VERY talented and I like his music but is never abd will never be competition for USHER…… Usher has CLASS and his songs are CLASSIC R&B songs that will live on. CONFESSIONS is one of the top R&B albums ever…… 8701 also gave us classic and CLASSY songs.
When Chris can sell out arenas all over the world like him & make music that can live 10-15 later then we can start comparing the two …. oh and I mean SELL OUT 50 ARENAS IN THE U.S. ALONE… check Ushers wikipedia tour page…….
Usher sells out more arenas in the US/Canada than both Rihanna & Beyonce. ……….. Usher is STILL the most successful R&B artist in America……. He even has a diamond album….Chris is not on Usher’s level yet. …… he’ll never go 10 x platinum…. never…. CB is not even close…

Everyone is downloading so for any artist to sell 10 million plus albums again it is very unlikely!

Usher’s 2010/2011 tour has been selling out arenas all over the world including the US…..CB is still doing summer jams and would have only been Usher’s support act on tour……..Usher went platinum in 2008 & 2010 but CB last two cds havent gone plkatinum…. no comparison……… Bey and Ush are on a different level than all the others

the hiatus usher took in the mist of his career really took a toll. confessions was an awesome album, but the key word here is “WAS”. it has been reported usher ‘s audience on his last tour consist of mostly women over 35. this means he isn’t bringing in the new generation. very few artist can pull this off as did madonna and michael jackson. everyone else the same rule applies , “out with the old and in with the new”. yes breezy is back and performance wise he is the closest to mj. being able to pull in 19 million viewers on dwts counts for someting. #teambreezy
I hope Usher brings back an album like Confessions. Here I Stand was also good, but Raymond V Raymond was his worst to date. He started going with the pop crowd, like Nicki Minaj and Justin Bieber. Still love him though.
And to people saying that MJ didn’t mention Usher. For your info, MJ was Usher’s mentor. There’s even pictures of them together. Usher was also chosen to sing at MJ’s funeral.
