Following months of speculation, it finally appears R&B star Brandy is no longer a free agent.
Full story after the jump…
That Grape Juice received reliable word back in March that the former ‘Moesha’ star was finalizing a new record deal with a “major”.
Fast forward five months and all signs point to the label in question being J Records. Ironically a sub-division of Sony Music (the same label group Ms. Norwood’s last label, Epic, is housed at), the first inkling of her involvement with J was the presence of Breyon Prescott in the trailer for her new reality show. Billed as her “business partner”, Prescott (a well-known J Records exec) revealed that he “signed her to the label”.
What’s more, the official site for the label have begun posting news updates on the 32 year old. Practice which is exclusively reserved for their own artists.
Adding her own salt and pepper to the speculation, the singer this week retweeted the following fan message sent to her on Twitter:
RockBoiZo: I bet you @4everBrandy is signed to J Records. I got a strong feeling!
Home to the likes of Alicia Keys, Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson, and Monica, the label is viewed by many as ‘the’ hub for premium R&B in a musical climate; a climate which – by and large – prioritizes Pop and Electro beats. As such, with Brandy expressing a desire to return to her R&B roots (after ‘Human’s Pop-y flare), J seems like the surest of fits.
An official announcement is believed to be imminent.
