In many a way, 2011 has been a breakout year of sorts for a certain Kelly Rowland. Indeed the last few months for the singer have been characterised by single and radio success, as well as a critical and public favour for her role on The X Factor UK.
However, in smartly taking a leaf out of Monica‘s book, it seems the 30 year old realises that true success in today’s climate comes from grinding to no end – even if that means opening for a newer act.
As such, the Destiny’s Child alumni took centre-stage at Chris Brown’s ‘F.A.M.E Tour’ opening in Toronto last night. And backed by 8 scantily clad dancers, rocked the house with some of her most noted hits, including ‘Motivation’.

Kudos to Kelly. From the swag, the vocals, the choreo, her set was most definitely ‘winning’. Here’s hoping she continues to show and prove, so as to facilitate a tour of her own in the near future. For now, though, this is a great look!

The ‘Motivation’ performance was very good.I loved the dancing, the attitude, the vocals.It was great.Now, I don’t know how I feel about the DC tribute.In all fairness, Kelly wasn’t the lead singer of DC (no shade), so it sounds kind of awkward to listen to the backtrack with Beyonce singing and Kelly just doing adlibs (they were off btw).Beyonce can definetely bring it with the DC tribute (I saw it happen).And those guys dry humping… 😕 Ugh…

@ NICK I don’t know if i was watching the same video but I was not impressed either with what TGJ posted. She was breathless and it caused her voice to get very deep at times. Her voice was wack on all tracks. If anyone notice when she cannot sing the entire line she says something to the audience. The DC medley was a mess. Sorry kelly but I was expecting stronger voice and more solid performances. MY OPINION. That was not moving to me at all, still better than a lot i have seen.

I honestly didn’t care for the DC medley. I think you see all of her shortcomings when she attempts to carry those songs solo. In ‘Motivation’ she gave a lot more energy and had more presence. That was better. I still find Kelly and Chris together to be an odd pairing, but I’m glad both are enjoying some success.

I would rather see her performances for “I’m that chick,” “When Love takes Over,” “Lay it on Me,” or “Feelin Me Right Now” if she performs that one. Hopefully those clips will pop up soon, since this was just the first show.

Ok. I just watched the videos. She did great with Motivation! The DC medley was eh. I’d rather she performed her parts on Lose My Breath and Survivor. She’s hit or miss with Soldier.
I like the costume, but not the ill-fitting jacket. I love Kelly’s vocals and swag!! However, that set is not poppin. The black curtain is mad tacky, and ladders? Really? They don’t have room for a band and dj? Tha’ts all she needs.
Ms. Kelly looks great, and she performs well here. I don’t mind the DC Medley. I wish she would sing her DC lines fully instead of the “what? yeah! Hey! Sing it yall!” interruptions. She carries this habit onto her “Motivation” performance albeit to a lesser extent. The performance gets more pleasant. I love crowd participation. At the same time, I dislike the way Kelly’s vocal performance of the track is compromise by this habit. It’s the beginning of this tour, so Ms. Kelly has seveval opportunities to master her performances.
Nice performances, but I do have 2 small complaint s, … 1st complaint, the DC Medley … I know she wants to sing the DC Medley for (1) recognition & (2) to extend her set, but I’ll like to see her do a concert & just sing HER songs … she’s an opening act, which usually require the artist to sing 3 -4 songs, she has enough songs of her own to hold down a set … she’s finally getting the much deserved recognition of being a solo artist & I think she should really take hold of the “solo” statues & let go of the DC Medley … 2nd complaint, what in the hell are her backup dancers wearing? Are those long-johns?
