Published: Sunday 6th Nov 2011 by Rashad

After the success of its inaugural showing with soulstresses Kelly Price, Fantasia, Marsha Ambrosius,and more, BET readied round 2 of ‘Black Girls Rock’ – a showcase (of) and ode to today’s brightest African American women in various disciplines.  And with a bevy of big names joining this year’s line-up (including Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott, and Erykah Badu), the star-studded affair may have even outdone its predecessor.

Though the Tracee Ellis Ross/Regina King – hosted event took place at Paradise Theater in NYC on October 15th, it aired tonight on BET.  See performances below:

Jill Scott

Mary J. Blige

    Yessssssssssss All the Marys’ SHUT IT DOWN! Jill Scott and Erykah Badu did their thang too. Mama Shirley took full advantage of the one minute!

    Ha! I notice Rihanna’s pop ass wasn’t there. Probably wasn’t invited because her music is too “white” and black people don’t listen to that pop crap.

    They all did amazing. Estelle raised the bar on her vocals. That was seriously one of Mary’s best vocal performances period. Mary Mary are just greatt. That Elle Varner is so fresh and unique.

    Nice to see so many female soul vocalists together in one concert 🙂

    I wish Melanie Fiona had performed ‘4 AM’ because this song is gaining some momentum on radio and she could have really helped it go even further, even though I understand that lyrically it may not have fit the theme of the concert… 🙁 Anyway, I liked that song too and she is definetely evolving as a performer which is why I’m checkig for her 😉

    @vandrea lol nahh. alot of black ppl love rihanna. the main reason shes not there is because shes on tour (i think). if u notice beyonce isnt there either. i guess they both are too “big” for something like this…idk

    @TRUTH TELLER

    I noticed too!! Her Mama’s are the best and Tia (the sax player) was there.

    They were great performances, especially Mary’s and Jill’s.

    BLACK GIRLS ROCKS! WE DO ROCK EVERY WHERE WE GO, NO MATTER WHAT. I LOVE BEING BLACK. ITS AMAZING WHAT WE BEEN THRU IN LIFE . RACE STILL EXIST, JUST BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. I LOVE WHEN THE WOMEN SAID BLACK WOMEN NEED TO STICK TOGETHER AND THAT IS TRUE. YES! WE HAVE STYLE, HAIR, BOOTY, LOL, BEAUTY TOO, CLOTHES, MONEY, SOME OF US TO DO ,BUT WE STILL STAND TALL NO MATTER WHAT, JOBS, NO JOBS, STILL STAND! AND FAMLIIES. AND WE HATE FOR WHAT?ON EACH OTHER. WE ALREADY BEEN KNOCKED DOWN AND HAVE TO STRUGGLE TO GET UP, STEROTYPES OF BLACK WOMEN. I REALLY ENJOY THE SHOW IT WAS GREAT. JILL SCOTT LOOK GOOD! i WILL NEVER FORGET WHERE I COME FROM. A LOT OF BLACK WOMEN ALWAYS TALKING ABOUT WHO THEY WOULDNT DATE BECAUSE OF THE BLACK MAN STEREOTYPE OF NO JOB, NO EDUCATION, BABIES, WELL IT GOES FOR THE BLACK WOMEN TOO, HELP ONE ANOTHER AND INSTEAD OF BEING SO NEGATIVE TOWARDS EACH OTHER AND LISTENING TO HATERS! LOOK AT WHERE THE HATERS STAND! U CANT HELP EVERYBODY. BUT IF U REACH OUT AND DO WHAT U CAN DO IN A RELATIONSHIP IT WILL HELP BOTH OUT. EVERYBODY DESERVE A CHANCE IN LIFE. BLACK WOMEN KEEP STRIVING
    TO THE TOP. I LOVE EVERY BLACK WOMAN NO MATTER WHERE THEY ARE TODAY, THE HATERS TOO, LOL THEY MAKE ME PUSH HARDER IN LIFE. KEEP STANDING TALL, NO MATTER WHAT!
