Mary J. Blige has long been renowned for her willingness to tell it as it is, and she lived up to that billing on the IRL Podcast with Angie Martinez.
During a unique segment on the show (which she was visiting to promote her Las Vegas residency), the veteran radio host quizzed the Queen of Hip-Hop/Soul on the viral memes about her performing like she was “tired” at select shows.
True to form, MJB didn’t hold back with her response. A response that may surprise folk.

Keeping it candid, Blige said of the memes:
“I was exhausted… So for people to be like ‘oh she look tired’, I was f*cking tired, I was.”
She went on to unpack her belief that people ought to have consideration for the hardworking women in the industry who are working their “a**es off” and may be tired come their “30th show.” She pointed to acts like herself and Beyoncé.

I feel her fr! No one knows what that grind is like unless you do it. television, album, rehearsal and then tour. But…no ma’am, you was looking like that after show 2. She just had burnt herself out is what it is.
She should have never bought up Beyoncé’s name. Beyoncé would never show her audience she’s tired. That’s something you would see in the BTS docs. Mary has an attitude and always have. We are both from Yonkers, NY westchester county. I know her type
Beyonce does not do that poppin and twerkin like she used to. She does a little, but her dancers do the heavy lifting. Beyonce is just a master of appearances. So, she is able to make it look like she’s doing more than she is.
Oh Mary… don’t trick your fans. If you are not ready, don’t touring… they paid their tickets just to see you, it is not like you were doing charity on Super Bowl half time.
Residencies are best for veterans. Same bed, stage, interactions with the fans (forgetting where you are and addressing your Italian crowd in Japanese would suck out loud!) Kendu will go to hell for what he
had Mary do to pay him at an age she musta wanted career to chill. But she survived the worst of it. 👏
Not the smartest PR move to say you half assed performances because you were tired when you have a residency that you want people to purchase tickets to. Also, during the interview, she discussed drinking the night before….surprised a veteran is making such rookie mistakes
