Kelly Rowland To Be Honored By Essence

The last few years have seen Kelly Rowland really step out as a solo force. An occurrence which has not only been noted by many a music head, but also Essence – who are to honour the singer next month.

Full story after the jump…

The respected outlet host their 3d Annual Black Women In Music gala on February 8th, and have chosen Rowland and music exec Sylvia Rhone as the night’s honorees.

Speaking on why the singer was chosen, ESSENCE editor-in-chief Constance C.R. White said:

“We’ve watched Kelly Rowland for over a decade grow from a teenage sensation into an international superstar. Her talent, drive and remarkable creative force show what it truly means to be a young powerhouse in an ever-changing industry.

Kelly embodies the ‘soul’ of young Black women through her music and we are proud to salute her dynamic contributions.”

The ‘Motivation’ singer will also perform at the pre-Grammy event, as will rapper Eve.

———————————

Needless to say, this is quite the coup for Kelly – who is also nominated for two Grammy’s. Undoubtedly a great way to kick off the New Year, here’s wishing her continued success moving forward.

    It’s my pleasure to see you succeed in 2012 in whatever you do.

  2. Kingphoenix January 9, 2012

    Honoured for what? As proud as i am of Kelly for a slight career revival in 2011, she didnt prove nothing other than that she can make a fad hit with the hot rapper of the moment, and where cute outfits and a judges’ table…Imma need her to do a lot more before she gets honored for something real.

  3. aj January 9, 2012

    Why u mad though?

  4. JP January 9, 2012

    I can respect this.

    Kelly Rowland is so underrated and under appreciated. Glad she is receiving recognition.

    I hope her next single is a club banger or something reminiscent to Love/Hate, Still in Love with my Ex, Addicted, Each Other, Put It In or Make You Wanna Stay

  5. JP January 9, 2012

    Also, can we please get a Kelly Rowland and Brandy duet, please?

  6. OZ January 9, 2012

    @KINGPHOENIX take a seat ! she is getting honored by a entity that recognized her talent who the f*** cares what you think !!!

    Which some people would just go somewhere and shut the f*** up with some of these retarded negative comments, get it in your head….YOUR NOBODY ! YOU DONT KNOW KELLY ! NO ONE GIVES A F*** WHAT YOU THINK !

    Congrats Kelly !

  7. queenposh January 9, 2012

    well done kelly.. truly deserved..

  8. Kingphoenix January 9, 2012

    @AJ

    I’m mad because Kelendria has all the ingredients to be a huge success yet she flops 90% of the time. What happen to Feeling Me Right Now and Keep it Between Us coming out as singles and videos? I mean, damn Kelz you are in your thirties still trying to build your career, how much time do you think you have…Her album was mediocre at best and she barely uses her talent to the level that it deserves….Do you understand why i am “mad though” now?

  9. lenor January 9, 2012

    Well Done Kelly, so proud! ppl keep bashing Kelly and for what??!! she continues to strive to do better and is #winning!

  10. Kingphoenix January 9, 2012

    @OZ

    Yep, imma know body just like Kelly is a nobody on Billboard and UK Charts…I’m voicing my opinion Just like Kelly is wasting her talents…If nobody cares what i think why did you take the time to write a paragraph in response to a nobody? No comprende?

  11. Kingphoenix January 9, 2012

    I hope 2012 will be the year when people understand the difference between bashing and constructive criticism…Oh, yeah Good Luck Kelly, you will need it with your lame as fanbase who don’t support you in no type of way really but always singing your praises on the internet as if you were actually doing something when your solo credentials clearly indicate that you are not…

  12. Bey Fan… January 9, 2012

    Proud of Kells

    I kinda agree with @KingPhoenix …..

    Kelly is more talented than a lot of artist out there, she’s pretty as hell, she can dance, she can sing, she has a great personality…. I def think she should be at a higher place. But her day will come.

    Proud of Kells tho…..

  13. Jessica January 9, 2012

    @Kingphoenix: Bitter much??? LMAO!!! Are you mad she has money, beauty, and talent and you don’t?? LMAO. Are you mad your in your mother basement, fat, ugly, and no love life and Kelly is going places?? STAY PRESSED, LMAO!!! Are you mad that she came from the 3rd highest female R&B group next to TLC AND EN VOUGE, AND GETTING HONORED?? LMAO!!! Do yourself a favor, stay pressed in your mother basement behind the computer and feel sorry for yourself because KELLY IS STILL WINNING!!! LMAO!!!

    Good for Kelly, she deserve it, she worked hard since her teens, and haters are pathetic like Kingphoenix over there behind the computer. Once again Congrats Kelly!!!

  14. Bey’knight January 9, 2012

    Why are people comin at @kingphoenix. When i read d post, i thought d same thing. Kelly hasnt achieved that much solowise i thought motivation was d turning point but no. She got on xfactor, i thought it would raise her profile in uk but her album ended up doin worse than her prev ones. Talent is not d issue. Honours are for accomplishments. In that regard, ideally rihanna would be honoured b4 kelly and thats alot coming from me. Still watever d case may be, Kelly should make somn of it. Shes too sloppy. E- thuggin stans online aint helpin either

  15. Kingphoenix January 9, 2012

    @Jessica

    Mothers Basement never? Sittin up in my room, chilling and enjoying my break from my Ivy League school laughing at the fact that Kelly’s career after 15 years biggest highlight forever and always will be Destiny’s Child’s Lead back up singer…Kelly is winning alright, winning the adoration of basic b****** everywhere, I’m not saying anything on my MacBook Pro that i wouldn’t say to Kelendria’s face if she asked my opinion of her fledgling career.

  16. Kingphoenix January 9, 2012

    @Bey”knight

    Why are you surprised they are coming for me? You have Rihanna Stans harass you all the time for telling the truth…This is what basic b****** due, they stan for lessors, and when someone tries to give input that will make the lessors better, basic b****** get mad because if their lessors become better then they will no longer have anyone to identify with…Its the Basic-B**** Catch22, i dont like it but in a way i kinda feel sorry for them…wait a minute, no i don’t!

  17. Wizard January 9, 2012

    *love this version a lot * , i know u gonna like it @sam unless u don’t have it already 😉

  22. Jay January 9, 2012

    Go Kelly, she is deserving. Kelly has proven that she can shine in her own right. Regardless of criticism and comparisons to others in the industry Kellly was able to have a huge career jump last year. She should t keep recording and making hits cause she is in the spotlight and her album and performances has proven she has it. Kelly has it just like Beyonce’ has it but now she proves she can shine without anyone.

  23. truth January 9, 2012

    Kelly is a hard worker

    F*** the haters- you lookin real dumb right now

  24. Collegegirl January 9, 2012

    Didn’t know Kelly was performing on the Pre Grammy’s. That’s big for her as a solo star! I wonder what song will she perform. I hope she do a medley of her hit songs and include her new single Keep It Between Us. No wonder Kelly haven’t been tweeting. When she’s busy she never tweets. I hope she stays persistent with her music so she can perform this yr again on the BET Awards and other Award shows.

  25. Musiqluvr January 9, 2012

    Kelly is incredibly talented. The downside is she seems to not see just how talented she is. Hopefully wit doors finally opening that her eyes will soon follow. To have even minimal success after bein in a group like Destinys Child & in it with the star that is Beyonce is a feat in itself. So I think the award is quite fitting. & hopefully this is just the beginning. Congrats Kelly. & keep it up this time.

  26. Steph January 9, 2012

    @Collegegirl Lol you are right. When she is busy she never tweets! or updates her FB page…it’s all good. Proud of you Kelly, Work! Haters will always hate, but girl the sky is the limit…keep reaching! bless!

  27. chil January 9, 2012

    what kills me is when haters question the judgement of the persons who actually feel as if kelly HAS accomplished something..reason being why she is being nominitaed..if you would get out of your favs ass and actually look at how hard kelly has worked to even become relevent in this day and age behind beyonce is an accomplishment in its own.

    record shows that only the lead singer of any group becomes successfull and make a name for themselves..stop being so bitter..Kelly definitely deserves to be recognized…she may not have the numbers, stardom, or fan base as Beyonce..but Kelly definitely hustled for what she has..

    CONGRATS KELLY ROWLAND! From a true DC4, DC3, Beyonce, Kelly and Michelle Fan!!!!!

    1 grammy

  31. Carlos January 10, 2012

    Kelly is doing well as a solo artist and all you pressed haters might as well sit back and accept that Kelly is successful. She may not be to your standard but to be nominated for Grammy’s and being honored by Essence is huge for her. I love Kelly and I wish her more and more success. This is just the beginning for her. And Kelly may be 30 but she looks just as young as Rihanna and anybody else.

  32. Just Me January 10, 2012

    Kelly promotes other stuff more so than her own music. Whatever happened to the video she was shooting with Lance Gross, I know I never seen it…and she released videos way to far after the album was released.

    I support Kelly but she needs to support herself instead of everyone else.
