New Video: Dawn Richard – ‘SMFU’

As previously reported, former Dirty Money & Danity Kane captain Dawn Richard has earned fan favor with her Brandy-esque track ‘Save Me From U (SMFU)’.  The dramatic, black-and-white clip is the first unveiled from the songstress’s forthcoming ‘GoldenHeart’.  Despite first making rounds on the net over two months ago, last week’s trailer tease certainly amped anticipation for this Ev Salomon-directed clip, now available for viewing in its entirety.

Does the ‘GoldenHeart’ hitmaker strike gold?  You decide after the jump:

Indeed, it’s a new Dawn.  The clip sees the songstress, who’s spent most of her career sharing the spotlight with some other party (or parties), finally taking center stage.  A perfect example of where less is more,  the simplicity of the video certainly makes a strong point as it allows the song’s commanding lyrics to ultimately serve as its sell.  In an age where ballads and mid to slow tempo numbers are not exactly the blockbusters on charts they used to be, it will be interesting to see how this fares.  But, sell or not, this song and visual combo are just another shining example of the talent that is Dawn.

Here’s to more creative ventures like this from the budding diva.

I LOVE Dawn and the song and video are both just beautiful! I love the simplicity of the video, but yet it still captures the essence of the song! Great job Dawn I can’t wait for Golden Heart!

  21. Independent Thinker January 6, 2012

Very nice. You know, I never thought she sounded like Brandy when she was in Danity Kane. I always thought she had a very unique and distinctive voice (which is what made it the best in the group in my opinion), but here, I do hear the Brandy likeness. I don’t like that though. I would hate for Dawn to become a solo artist only to lose that which is unique and distinctive about her. I mean, Brandy is a great artist to be compared to, but what good is being a solo act if you can’t maintain your own vocal identity? One thing is for sure, Dawn’s vocals have reached another level. Girlfriend could always sing, but this song/video really showcases her newfound range. I’m not mad at her for that. If she releases an album, I may just buy it.

  23. ojie king January 6, 2012

is it me or is she sounding like Brandy?

  24. Dev January 6, 2012

Nah, too Brandyish. Dawns vocals, harmonies and arrangements have never sounded this Brandy like since i have been listening to her music, and as someone said her voice sounds processed. I’ll just wait a while longer to hear the real deal.
I’m not here for imitations. You don’t spend years trying to be a solo artist and then come out sounding like someone else and not yourself.

  25. Popeater January 6, 2012

I rocks with Dawn all day everyday!!! I hope she gets her shine soon!!!!

Stop with the Brandy comparisons, she can’t help that they have similar voices. I’m a B-rocka fan as well. There is room for both.

    Only one suggestion:

  27. MISHKA January 6, 2012

    Great job Dawn !!!

She was my fave from Danity Kane. She has the fierceness and the boldness to strike gold, she just needs the right team to support her.

She’s on the right track, keep up the good job Dawn!

  28. junior January 6, 2012

im not crazy about the song but its solid for dawn and shes def doing her thing keep it up ma!

  29. Teflon Boy January 6, 2012

Really like the lyrics and creativity behind the song…, and I love Brandy so I’m not mad that dawn’s clearly a fan of her swagg

  31. junior January 6, 2012

I like the song. She doing really well, when it comes to connecting with the lyrics… The only thing I didn’t care for was some of the dance combos. I don’t think some of the choreo matched the song, but whatever.

  32. RHI RHI IS QUEEN January 6, 2012

  33. B4REAL02 January 6, 2012

    Alright Dawn!!!! I like it…..

  34. BrandyNMonicaStan January 6, 2012

The song is cool and Dawn is clearly influenced by Brandy and has never denied that but Brandy is often imitated but she can never be duplicated because she is BRANDY!!!

  35. millhouse January 6, 2012

actually Dawn denied being influenced by Brandy. She said she never listened to Brandy until her brother gave her a cd when she was in college… Sounds like a crock of ish to me… but if she says she wasnt influenced by Brandy who am i to deny it…. Dawn makes better sings then Brandy tho… im talking about the new material, not the classics, cuz Brandy has already proven herself. But if Brandy aint careful Dawn will take her spot…. I wonder what it would sound like if they did a duet…

  36. @antertain January 7, 2012

    Artistic and well put..
    Very Good Job!!!

  37. LOVE87 January 7, 2012

I love this song it’s a great song and I love the video too.

  38. s_w_a_p January 8, 2012

I’m loving the song and video. It’s very different than what’s on the radio, but lets be real guys, she can’t pull an Adele. Just like the rest of you guys said, Dawn was my fave from Danity Kane. Her voice was very unique, her personality was captivating, and her dance skills was kinda the best (Shannon gave her a run for her money), but in order for her to become the mega-star that she once was, she might need to take a step back in the past and make AT LEAST two or three pop-ish singles. Always be yourself, but do what you gotta do in order to survive. IJS.

  39. Shadeed January 17, 2012

Idk how many times I have to say this, there’s nothing wrong w/ COMPARING her to Brandy, but to throw shade & call her a WANNABE is a whole other level! O.k she sounds like Brandy whooped-de-doo, who said Brandy was the only female R&B artist allowed to have a deep singing voice, if that’s the case you might as well compare every female artist who sings deep to Brandy, which wouldn’t make ANY sense at all!

  40. michele September 13, 2013

I love brandy ♥♥♥ … and i believe that brandy will take dawns likeness to her singing voice , as a compliment . So you guys should really do the same … and just keep it moving .
