US Charts: Whitney Houston Sets New Record / Adele Remains #1

Published: Wednesday 29th Feb 2012 by David

In at #2, 6 and 9 respectively are ‘Whitney: The Greatest Hits‘, ‘The Bodyguard’ and ‘Whitney Houston‘, making Whitney the first woman in Billboard history to have three albums in the top ten at the same time.

Selling a total of 320,000 albums and 373,000 tracks in the last week alone, sales of her music are set to rise even further.

For, in a bid to capitalize on the renewed interest in her discography, major retailers have begun stocking her music this week to drive physical sales up, as most of her sales last week were generated digitally.

Elsewhere, Adele is setting a few records of her own with ’21’. Indeed, with 22 weeks spent atop the Billboard 200, it is now the longest running #1 album since Prince‘s 1984 release, ‘Purple Rain’.

Moving 297,000 copies in the last week, the album sits 6 spots above its predecessor ‘19‘, which sold 39,000 units since the last week’s tally.

At #14 is Rihanna’s ‘Talk That Talk‘ with 23,202 units and at #54 is Beyonce‘s ‘4‘ shifting 9,184 units bringing its total sales to 1,144,844.

Well done to all!

What I don’t get is michael’s albums weren’t allowed to be in the main hot 200 album charts bc it was of for a certain amount if weeks/yrs. So how us Whitney’s albums able to rechart? Has the rules changed?

  3. danny February 29, 2012

Billboard changed the rules to reflect the current times with Whitney. They stated that which is why she is charting.

That Adele reign just won’t let up baby!

Needless to say that Adele’s on her way to grab her 4th #1 single when Rumour has It gets an official release.

AmberRussell I think Billboard changed the rules shortly after Michael Jackson’s death to chart old albums on the main chart again instead. Some of his older albums started charting again under the new rules.

I adore this woman. I’m happy to see Whitney making history once again. I was thinking about her earlier tonight and I just couldn’t believe she’s gone. It’s one of those moments where it sinks in… all over again! R.I.P Whitney. I’m at peace somewhat knowing that she’s at peace though.

As for some of the other mentions…
    Get it Bey!
& wow @ Adele. I guess she’ll be living at that #1 spot ’til December.

Of course WHITNEY! What were you all expecting? She´s a true great. It´s been 3 weeks and she still at #2 plus two more albums in the top10, and people couldn´t even buy the physical albums till now, they are stocking just now. There are few people who made an stunning impact in music history and everybody knows it like Whitney. Just MJ, Whitney and the likes. Nobody else
I´ve listened to her all the months of my life (I´m not a one of those that cos now she dead I´m remebering her) but still I´m finding new concerts on youtube from the 80´s (only audio) and OMG. At least she is at peace

I love that Whitney is selling, but why did she have to pass away to have this happen? I will never understand this. So glad I appreciated her while she was here. 🙁

Rihanna – Talk That Talk (released November 21)

There’s been a lot of carrying on about how Rihanna has yet to secure a No. 1 album in America, but with Talk That Talk’s current worldwide sales, it’s Rihanna who will be having the last laugh. In just a month, the disc has sold an impressive 1,303,000 copies, with the majority of the sales coming from outside of the US. It’s not like she’s doing bad in America, though — TTT may be under 400k in the States, but RiRi currently has the longest-running No. 1 single of 2011 over there with her smash hit “We Found Love”.

And beyonce can’t seem to find a hit if her life depended on it, less see her last hit was in 2008, bee hive & haters….
