Much like a certain Dolly Parton, Madonna‘s sales have always been top heavy.
Starting off impressive in their first week, the ‘Material Girl’s LP’s find themselves sliding down the chart by its second week, much to dismay of her staunchest fans.
However, her latest effort ‘MDNA‘ has found itself becoming the mother of all disappointments.

After debuting with 359,000 units, the LP has sold a measly 46,000 copies this week suffering a sales decrease of 87%.
Coming in at #8, the album has suffered the biggest 1st to 2nd week drop Billboard history, beating ‘efforts’ scored by closest rival Lady GaGa.
This, despite enjoying an intense pre-launch campaign which saw the star headline the Super Bowl 2012 Halftime Show, and release the budding hits ‘Girl Gone Wild‘ and ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’.
Set to drop even further next week, the LP’s slump comes months before the icon kicks off her ‘2012 World Tour‘, whose tickets were bundled with the album in a bid to boost sales- hence her impressive first week.

album sales are important , but you haters aren’t seeing the reality , she hasn’t do any promotion to the album , and anyway in the first week of release the album has sold almost 1 million copies ww ,this is not disappointing!soundscan has told that the story of tour ticket sold with album copies was just 5000 not so many how people said , and anyway the album debuted at #1 in at least 30 aountries!!!
I don’t see this album goin platinum in the states. It’ll be very hard for it to reach 1 million copies in the US. That means, she might never beat Barbra Streissand’s album sales in the US. And to think that people were calling Beyonce’s 4 a flop! Beyonce will never have the total record sales of Madonna or Janet, but she has vocal skills that Madonna and Janet could only dream of having. This record-breaking 2nd week drop that’s being referred to here probably have more to deal with the actually numbers ( &percentages) and not the chart placement. Madonna gets off way too easy. She’s had all the connections in the world – Clear Channel & advantages with her tour bundles and I hear she is the Queen of something (not music related), but she still couldn’t get over this time.
Everyone else is a flop Beyonce’s “4”, Gaga’s”BTW”, Janet’s “Discipline” and Mariah’s “Memoir’s…”, but Madge’s “Hard Candy” and now “MNDA” seems to make everyone go mute. Smh. Yet she’s still the Queen even though she was slaughtered by just about everyone in the 90’s and from ’00’s ’til now pulled stunt after stunt. I don’t get it. 1) This CD does not measure up to the Madonna standard IMO! For some odd reason she listened to ppl who marched her down the wrong path. Madonna is a legend, an ICON, she never needed to change a thing. Anyone of her classics if dropped today would be a hit! She was making “today’s” style of music when theses “NEWBIES” were in pampers!….EROTICA, GET INTO THE GROVE, VOGUE, EXPRESS YOURSELF <— we have all witnessed who modern that song is today as "MAN CACA"…oops I mean Lady Gaga, stole the beat from it just last year!
2) Madonna did "2 days" of promos 0_O? If she truly wanted different results she should have promoted her CD more!
3) Unfortunately we live in the "NEW ERA" of music and promotion where those that own th emusic industry also conrol the media. They dictate what will or will not sale based on how much of a stake they have in that person'd success. 360 Degree contracts are deep ppl. Folks want their money without any form of competition stopping it!

Not only did she not deserve that #1 last week, she robbed Lionel Richie out of his first #1 album in decades. His would have been based on actual sells and not trickery and inflation. Now her fans are holding on to her tour like a crack head to a pipe. But at the end of the day, no matter how big her tour is, it won’t make her relevant again.

I’m not the biggest Janet fan but she has gone platinum/multi platinum w/ 2 of her 3 last albums w/ hardly any promo, or radio play(blacklisted). Also she has been relatively successful for 30+ yrs in music and acting. All her albums and movies are #1 or #2 till this day. That makes her a bad b****. Most people I have met (and I live in NYC), and it’s international where I live, concider her a legend, she even has a big billboard here in times square for blackglama as their feature legend. Michael ain’t a magician. 30 yrs+ is not due to a relative. That’s reductive reasoning 🙂

At least her first week was good so she is off to a good start. She may see a boost in sales later if one of her future releases become a big hit and with the upcoming tour. Either way, Madonna is a legend and the undisputed QOP, anything she does at this point is lagniappe. Just like Aretha and Michael, and other legends like Stevie, Mariah, etc., thier album sales at the end or in the later years of their careers does not change their status. It’s those who are still trying to attain legendary status whose numbers are still factors. Madonna is doing good at this stage of longevity.

Get real b******. It’s hard to be a pop artist and sell to 20 something’s without radio play. The first single (like American life in 03) derailed this entire era. At the same time (read the Rolling Stone article today) all of the money is in her touring and Live Nation is her record company so they care less about album sales but tour tickets instead. Interscope is just the distributor of the album. There is absolutely no reason Turn Uo the Radio (next single) will not appear on radio aside from ageism. It’s a great pop song. You’ll soon find Mariah and Janet in the same position Madge is now with their next release, mark my words.

When I read that the ticket special from her tour contributed to this then it made more sense. With that said, the sales drop doesn’t really surprise me. There was not much hype behind it. It’s a dope album though!
