Sales Slump: Madonna’s ‘MDNA’ Drops By Almost 100%

Published: Wednesday 11th Apr 2012 by David

Much like a certain Dolly Parton, Madonna‘s sales have always been top heavy.

Starting off impressive in their first week, the ‘Material Girl’s LP’s find themselves sliding down the chart by its second week, much to dismay of her staunchest fans.

However, her latest effort ‘MDNA‘ has found itself becoming the mother of all disappointments.

Find out why below…

After debuting with 359,000 units, the LP has sold a measly 46,000 copies this week suffering a sales decrease of 87%.

Coming in at #8, the album has suffered the biggest 1st to 2nd week drop Billboard history, beating ‘efforts’ scored by closest rival Lady GaGa.

This, despite enjoying an intense pre-launch campaign which saw the star headline the Super Bowl 2012 Halftime Show, and release the budding hits ‘Girl Gone Wild‘ and ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’.

Set to drop even further next week, the LP’s slump comes months before the icon kicks off  her ‘2012 World Tour‘, whose tickets were bundled with the album in a bid to boost sales- hence her impressive first week.

So Please… SHUT THE F*** UP BILLBOARD!!! It did not have the biggest first to second wk drop… If your going to report, do it properly!!! MDNA hasn’t even fallen out of the top 10, so technically, this information is incorrect.

And BILLBOARD hasn’t even reported what you have… It’s jut said it’s taken a tumble!!!

This site an it’s S*** journalism f****** disgusts me!!!!!!!

  5. gio88 April 11, 2012

tghe album hasn’t had an “intense pre launch campaign” at superbowl she perfored just GMAYL and it was a lot of time before the album was out , she hasn’t do any promotion of the album , so why people say i’ts disappointing?

  6. kimberly April 11, 2012

well well, now that fans and so called stans say that albums sales don’t matter. I see the hypocrites. On another post they will call another artist flop.
Well madonna is in the history books even if she doesn’t want to be there. Biggest drop in history. lol.

  7. kimberly April 11, 2012

Gio88 well people said that she doesn’t need to promote cause she is QUEEN

  8. kimberly April 11, 2012

jake get it togetehr billboard is not talking about ranking but percentage drop. Other artist may have dropped low but not so much of a percentage gap. don’t be ashame, this is madonna. dropped 87% which other artist has dropped with a higher percentage? waiting. This is for her stupid disgusting ways. now every one is getting sick of the madonna ways. even her perfume add is banned. This old woman is no example for her daughter. I am so sure her boyfriend screws her daughter. \never though I would say such but madonna has disappointed me professionally

  9. Lady Gaga: The Quintessential Pop Star of This Generation April 11, 2012

    B**** take that. Haha! (“)

  10. gio88 April 11, 2012

album sales are important , but you haters aren’t seeing the reality , she hasn’t do any promotion to the album , and anyway in the first week of release the album has sold almost 1 million copies ww ,this is not disappointing!soundscan has told that the story of tour ticket sold with album copies was just 5000 not so many how people said , and anyway the album debuted at #1 in at least 30 aountries!!!

  11. Stephen April 11, 2012

I don’t see this album goin platinum in the states. It’ll be very hard for it to reach 1 million copies in the US. That means, she might never beat Barbra Streissand’s album sales in the US. And to think that people were calling Beyonce’s 4 a flop! Beyonce will never have the total record sales of Madonna or Janet, but she has vocal skills that Madonna and Janet could only dream of having. And Janet is more talented than Madonna, Madonna isn’t THAT talented

  12. beyonce adele fan April 11, 2012

People are tired of gimmicks hence Adele is slaying so much.
Madonna WAS the s*** back in the day but not anymore cause she got no talent.
4 is a flop when it was #1 for two weeks and several weeks in the top 10
I see gaga’s tour grossing more than madonna’s
    Next gimmick to flop………….clue she’s from barbados………………??!!
    The album is generic!

  13. Stephen April 11, 2012

@Gio88: the album debuted at #1 in only 18 countries, not 30 countries

  14. Stephen April 11, 2012

@Beyonce Adele Fan: even if GaGa’s tour grosses more , she will hardly beat the $400million plus that Sticky and Sweet grossed

  15. RoyalKev April 11, 2012

This record-breaking 2nd week drop that’s being referred to here probably have more to deal with the actually numbers ( &percentages) and not the chart placement. Madonna gets off way too easy. She’s had all the connections in the world – Clear Channel & advantages with her tour bundles and I hear she is the Queen of something (not music related), but she still couldn’t get over this time.

Everyone else is a flop Beyonce’s “4”, Gaga’s”BTW”, Janet’s “Discipline” and Mariah’s “Memoir’s…”, but Madge’s “Hard Candy” and now “MNDA” seems to make everyone go mute. Smh. Yet she’s still the Queen even though she was slaughtered by just about everyone in the 90’s and from ’00’s ’til now pulled stunt after stunt. I don’t get it. Some people love glossing over certain things.

  16. JP April 11, 2012

Is anyone surprised? I mean, from the start we all knew the album was a hot mess. They’re not playing her songs in the club, Im not hearing them on the radio, people aren’t singing them in the streets…i mean, what’s the real life tea?

  17. BeyHive (JAKE) April 11, 2012

Okay… I get it now… Maybe it does have to do with percentages and not chart placement!!!

well , i’m a madonna fan and this is reductive. 😡 , ppl are not that high on MDNA , MDNA is not effective anymore 😥

at least she can afford to flop cuz she’s a legend. all of them b****** above me stan for b****** and m************ dream of being 1/2 of what madonna is. including janet 😛

  20. CARLITA April 11, 2012

@ Jake, you’re right “#MyBad”. Don’t jump out there like that again without reading the whole post dummy!!!

  21. ♛ POP Royalty ♛ (Rude Boy) April 11, 2012

    @royalkev :

legends don’t flop , it is like having a SUSTAINED-RELEASE DRUG. but we can criticize ppl who are not legends if we talk about their sales ;).

and best believe legends differ from person to person , but certain acts like ” MJ and Madonna” are always present there if we are going to list them , JANET is not in the list for some. she’s not on Madonna’s lane , and if we are talking about madonna , since american life and music , her sales are not that big anymore 🙄

  22. RoyalKev April 11, 2012

    @ Pop Royalty

These “lanes”, if anything look like this:

These women are each other peers and trust me most people would consider them to be in each other lanes. 🙂

  23. modjo April 11, 2012

MDNA is her worst album to date , weak collabo and songs are terrible . too bad it was the most anticipated album of the year

  24. MUSIC FAV beyonce4ever April 11, 2012

    who cares about the sales,
she is the queen just like Beyonce.
she doesnt need to proove anything

  25. B is done. Good’knight April 11, 2012

    @ pop royalty
You continue your campaign of hypocrisy 101. No Madonna can’t afford to flop when she had all the advantages that @RoyalKev spoke on. Including the most veiwers for a performance on a sports program. Her numbers are abysmal for someone of her “legend”. None of the other “lessors” had those advantages. Or gave away half thier 1st wk “sales” for free.
Now sales don’t count cause madonna came out the looser? But for months, you and others like @onyx have been running your mouths talking about how madonna was gonna have the biggest sales this year.
Also @RoyalKev mentioned a bunch of different artist, but you always have Janet in your mouth. Lol! Your as crazy as the washed up old b**** you stan for.
    87% 2nd wk sales= “the queen” is dead. 🙂
This s*** is all kinds of funny! Who mad??

madonna used to be great . shes not so great now

  28. B_STANNING April 11, 2012

Madonna why are you flopping? You are a legend but its all good i guess because legends have low moments as well ad that doesnt change the fact your a legend.

  29. bill April 11, 2012

MDNA is trash just for money.

  30. mobwife April 11, 2012

    Okay lets be honest:

    1) This CD does not measure up to the Madonna standard IMO! For some odd reason she listened to ppl who marched her down the wrong path. Madonna is a legend, an ICON, she never needed to change a thing. Anyone of her classics if dropped today would be a hit! She was making “today’s” style of music when theses “NEWBIES” were in pampers!….EROTICA, GET INTO THE GROVE, VOGUE, EXPRESS YOURSELF <— we have all witnessed who modern that song is today as "MAN CACA"…oops I mean Lady Gaga, stole the beat from it just last year!

    2) Madonna did "2 days" of promos 0_O? If she truly wanted different results she should have promoted her CD more!

    3) Unfortunately we live in the "NEW ERA" of music and promotion where those that own th emusic industry also conrol the media. They dictate what will or will not sale based on how much of a stake they have in that person'd success. 360 Degree contracts are deep ppl. Folks want their money without any form of competition stopping it!

Bottom line: Madonna's a LEGEND, SCREW YOU HATERS! 🙂

  32. vanessa April 11, 2012

f****** flop hahhahaha u flopped badly she in the records book again im sure grannydonna will be happy about that old wrinkled ass b****

  33. ♛ POP Royalty ♛ (Rude Boy) April 11, 2012

    @BEY’knight ” sorry , i can’t deal with that new name” 😛 :

do u see me as one of her campaign ?! i don’t care if the b****’s latest 2 albums are flops , i love her , that’s it. and she still queen of pop to majority of ppl.

and i didn’t say “MDNA” is going to be the best selling album this year , i didn’t say that , actually i trashed the album like no other when it first came out , but i like it now and that’s all. to me , madonna reached a point at which she can flop safely and no one will do anything about it. and it is just weekly sales , usually her sales go up and down related how strong her singles and promo are. so it is too early to judge now , but from the look of things and if it will continue to be like that , well , i approve , it is going to be a big flop , and i will still like her regardless and she will still remain the queen of pop and everyone will deal.

MDNA is unfortunate album just like 4 , messy promo , bad singles choices , etc … but i still like it ! k ?!

and i stan for rihanna , that in itself , will make me pass if an album is a flop or not 😆 , nothing was painful as stanning for riri in the RR days when everyone thought we are nuts 😆

oh , and Legends and sales have different rules than other … mmm … players ” lessor acts who are not legends like beyonce , gaga , rihanna” , legends don’t flop , MJ’s “invincible” was a flop commercial wise , but did that caused MJ to lose his iconic status ?!
    the answer : NO !!
hard candy was a semi-flop , did that make madonna lose her crown ? I don’t think so. other b****** yet still try to break her records to even touch the ring 😆

yes you can kiss the ring but you will never touch the crown 😆 , but TBH , either gaga or rihanna is getting closer to get it sooner or later , i’m not gonna lie and pretend it is that safe anymore !!!! madonna better get her s*** together. 🙄

and i dislike janet , and i don’t think she’s a legend. ppl outside US aren’t that aware of her presence as it is the case in US. so ……

i talk globally , not domestically !!! but to be honest , b**** got her legacy though , i’m not gonna lie , but she’s in a lower lane of course

    @Royalkev :

no , this is the real one :

    #1. MJ
    #2. madonna
    #3. whitney
    #4. mariah
    #5. celine
#6. maybe maybe maybe janet. but this one in particular , i don’t see why she’s considered to be a legend by some ppl ?! 🙄 , maybe it comes as a misused label when you are Mj’s sister. like you are automatically gonna be a legend even if you didn’t do anything special.

    peace. 🙂

  34. NYLA April 11, 2012

Not only did she not deserve that #1 last week, she robbed Lionel Richie out of his first #1 album in decades. His would have been based on actual sells and not trickery and inflation. Now her fans are holding on to her tour like a crack head to a pipe. But at the end of the day, no matter how big her tour is, it won’t make her relevant again.

  35. prettigurlrock April 11, 2012

Who cares about her and her music.

  36. B is done. Good’knight April 11, 2012

    @pop royalty

I’m not the biggest Janet fan but she has gone platinum/multi platinum w/ 2 of her 3 last albums w/ hardly any promo, or radio play(blacklisted). Also she has been relatively successful for 30+ yrs in music and acting. All her albums and movies are #1 or #2 till this day. That makes her a bad b****. Most people I have met (and I live in NYC), and it’s international where I live, concider her a legend, she even has a big billboard here in times square for blackglama as their feature legend. Michael ain’t a magician. 30 yrs+ is not due to a relative. That’s reductive reasoning 🙂

Madonna has had the full machine of bought and paid radio time, the largest viewership for a superbowl performance, given half the 1st week album “sales” away. Also had nicki on 2 songs, lmfao, and Mia on tracks. Garnered much attention for comments ogaga, Janet, and Adele. And she BELLY FLOPPED like a great whale!!

You did say you didn’t like the music, but you did start to say she is gonna sell the most in agreement w/ other fans. Stop w/ the b*******!

The way it looks Gaga’s 1st wk sales( even minus the 99 cent joints) of BTW will out sell Madonna’s 1st month of MDNA. DAMN that’s bad business.

The milk is so bad.. It’s turned into great cheese! Lmao! Love her all you want. The new queen of pop seems to be gaga, and the new queen of blue eyed soul seems to be Adele.

  37. B is done. Good’knight April 11, 2012

I told you in the last post I’m not Bey’Knight or ratedx. Reading is fundamental. 🙂

  38. BitchIcantevenspellwelfare April 11, 2012

Love Madonna but I do not love “MDNA.”

It’s simply a lackluster album but at least it’s better than “Hard Candy.”

@♛ POP ROYALTY ♛ (RUDE BOY), let’s not about Janet. Her Legendary and Iconic status is cemented. One only has to look at her progeny to know that.

  39. ♛ POP Royalty ♛ ( where have Rude Boy been) April 11, 2012

    @B is good :

fair enough , i co-sign with your last comment . and maybe i should tone it down when it come to janet on the long run 😉

and yes , i declare gaga the next queen of pop. but Rihanna and katy are not letting it be easy i’m telling you , especially the latter one 😉

and adele is that “It girl” !! i love her cuz she depend solely on her talent since “chasing pavements” , no p**** pop , no s** , no n****** , just Voice and class 🙂 , u gotta love her man 🙂 , but i can love her beside rihanna as other artists 😉

and yes , MDNA can be a semi-flop if the things kept going that way , i’m not afraid or annoyed TBH 🙂 , she’s getting it cuz she shaded Janet ! God don’t like shady b****** 😆

  40. B is done. Good’knight April 11, 2012

    @ pop royalty

Thanks. TBH I can’t stand Mariah and Celine bores me to tears, but all those women @RoyalKev mentioned are legends and icons(including Madonna, who’s attitude I despise). They have all done their thing. I can still give props even if I can’t stand the artist.

Ps. Damn you change avi’s more than I change underwear! Lol! 🙂

  41. ecchi April 11, 2012

huh. i guess just her die hard fanbase got the hype and bought it first week. i’m sure they happy. 🙂

wonder if she can move some more people into her sound?

  42. ♛ POP Royalty ♛ ( where have Rude Boy been) April 11, 2012

    @B**** :

    oh well …… 🙂

  43. Anne April 11, 2012

At least her first week was good so she is off to a good start. She may see a boost in sales later if one of her future releases become a big hit and with the upcoming tour. Either way, Madonna is a legend and the undisputed QOP, anything she does at this point is lagniappe. Just like Aretha and Michael, and other legends like Stevie, Mariah, etc., thier album sales at the end or in the later years of their careers does not change their status. It’s those who are still trying to attain legendary status whose numbers are still factors. Madonna is doing good at this stage of longevity.

  44. dezi April 11, 2012

  46. Jamie April 11, 2012

Madonna is so hypocritical w/this ‘reductive’ business…Girls Gone Wild ripping off Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’. she is so jealous of Gaga’s success and longing for her glory days again

  47. Seth April 11, 2012

Get real b******. It’s hard to be a pop artist and sell to 20 something’s without radio play. The first single (like American life in 03) derailed this entire era. At the same time (read the Rolling Stone article today) all of the money is in her touring and Live Nation is her record company so they care less about album sales but tour tickets instead. Interscope is just the distributor of the album. There is absolutely no reason Turn Uo the Radio (next single) will not appear on radio aside from ageism. It’s a great pop song. You’ll soon find Mariah and Janet in the same position Madge is now with their next release, mark my words.

  48. B is done. Good’knight April 11, 2012

Mariah and Janet have already had issues with no support from record labels, blacklists(Janet), and ageism. What exactly is your point on ageism an Madonna?

Do you not remember that madonna has a deal built into her contract that her singles will be played on most clear channel stations at the top of every hour?
She also had Nicki, MIA, LMFAO, and CEE-LO fan bases ears to sell to. They are all top 20 hit artists.

Her issue is not one of ageism. If anyone has consistenly gotten a pass despite her age, its Madonna my dear.
    This is a case of:
    1- shitty material and callabo’s
2- shitty attitude talking s*** about others.

    Point, blank, period.

Y’all Madonna stans need to keep other artist outta your mouth. They have nothing to do w/ Madonna flopping. She did this all on her own, so stay on point.

This ain’t got s*** to do with Mariah, Janet, Gaga, etc.

  49. Black Madonna April 11, 2012

46,000 sounds like alot to me.. Either way the tour will snatch wigs

  50. MISHKA April 11, 2012

She chose Martin Solveig instead of David Guetta because everybody and their mama has worked with the latter. Her fault.

  51. Kyle April 11, 2012

I was shocked when I saw that her album sold over 350K in first week sales because she literally did no promo for it except the Superbowl and like two interviews. When I read that the ticket special from her tour contributed to this then it made more sense. With that said, the sales drop doesn’t really surprise me. There was not much hype behind it. It’s a dope album though!

  52. Onyx April 11, 2012

I read all the comments and i think OMG when people talk s*** about legends like Madonna or MJ, you realize how much ignorants those people are, all those young singer from Beyonce to Gaga are on they’re moment and still don’t sell what Madonna sold in her moment, keep hating honey, you would realize when this woman die how big she was, she might fall in the US but she’s a worldwide artist b******, and MDNA is one of her best records, you just don’t understand like you did with Born this Way, oh way now you like Born this Way coz you hate Madonna, yeah i forgot that.

    @B is done. Good’knight
i have never talk about album sales of anybody, where do you get that, me saying she’s gonna have big week sales no, no.

  53. Marcus April 11, 2012

I like Madonna but MDNA is not a good album that’s just reality. I knew I wasn’t buying when Give me All Your Love came out.

  54. #justsayin April 11, 2012

LOL, delusional madonna stans can fool themselves all they want. she is now officially THE BIGGEST FLOP IN HISTORY. all her chart tricks and snide comments about Janet & Gaga came back & bit her in her 1000 year old ass. People can talk s*** about Janet all they want but Fact is Fact: Janet OWNED that fossil back in the 90’s with only 2 albums, and Gaga OWNED that corpse in the 2000’s with only one album. now she’ll be lucky if MDNA outsells “Discipline”, which it won’t because all her fans already bought a hundred copies each & she gave the rest away with a cup of coffee & concert tickets. and the Born This Way Ball is gonna slaughter her tour.
