Today saw the Official Singles Chart unveil their list of the ‘Biggest Selling Artists of All Time‘, shining a light on the tally’s top twelve.
A top twelve, who have sold a minimum of 10 million singles in the United Kingdom, published to coincide with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the 60th anniversary of the chart, first published in the ‘New Musical Express’ in 1952.
The ‘Diamond Dozen‘ below…
01 | THE BEATLES | 21.9m |
02 | ELVIS PRESLEY | 21.6m |
03 | CLIFF RICHARD | 21.5m |
04 | MADONNA | 17.6m |
05 | MICHAEL JACKSON | 15.3m |
06 | ELTON JOHN | 14.8m |
07 | QUEEN | 12.6m |
08 | ABBA | 11.2m |
09 | DAVID BOWIE | 10.6m |
10 | RIHANNA | 10.4m |
11 | PAUL McCARTNEY | 10.2m |
12 | KYLIE MINOGUE | 10.1m |
While all listed should be applauded for this feat, we can’t but praise Rihanna for her #10 position-spearheaded by her reign on a digital front since her 2005 debut.
However, above any other act , it is The Beatles position at #1 that may startle even their most loyal of fans.
For despite their label ‘Apple Records’ engaging in an intense trademark battle with ‘Apple Computer‘, which saw their albums made unavailable to purchase on iTunes up until 2010, the group has moved 1 million digital tracks in the space of two years.
Pretty iconic, considering the fact that they split up 32 years ago.
