Today saw the Official Singles Chart unveil their list of the ‘Biggest Selling Artists of All Time‘, shining a light on the tally’s top twelve.
A top twelve,who have sold a minimum of 10 million singles in the United Kingdom, published to coincide with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the 60th anniversary of the chart, first published in the ‘New Musical Express’ in 1952.

For despite their label ‘Apple Records’ engaging in an intense trademark battle with ‘Apple Computer‘, which saw their albums made unavailable to purchase on iTunes up until 2010, the group has moved 1 million digital tracks in the space of two years.
Pretty iconic, considering the fact that they split up 32 years ago.

Congratulations. But there is a huge difference between Rihanna’s sales to the others’. Basically, Rihanna has only sold digital singles; the others, physical singles. I wouldn’t be surprised if until the end of the decade, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Black Eyed Peas and many other contemporary singers enter this list.
Today we’re going through the boom of single sales. Selling a million physical copies in the entire world was extraordinary a few years ago, but today it isn’t.
Physical singles were expencive and labels limited their release and distribution. Music industry forced people to buy the album instead of the single. There were many cases that they even cancelled the release of it after a few weeks of release just to boost the album sales, example: Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby”. Sometimes they didn’t even release it, like Destiny’s Child’s “Emotions”, No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak”, Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn”.
It’s clear that singles were never the focus of labels, they were just a sub product. Album sales have unstoppably been decreasing since early 00’s, so they are focused on singles, tour and advertisements thesedays.
I guess this is a cute way to undermine Rihanna’s achievements …
