That Grape Juice A&R: Rita Ora’s New Album

Published: Monday 24th Dec 2012 by David

Upon dominating the UK market earlier this year with the album, 2013 will welcome the official US launch of Rita Ora.

Undoubtedly hoping to live up expectations placed on her by Columbia / Roc Nation execs, it’s safe to say that this is one LP that can’t afford to under perform, considering it’ll serve as her first American effort and likely her sophomore set on home soil in the UK.

So, with the singer hard at work crafting new jams for this release, it’s time for you to have your say.

Not sure what we’re on about?

Details below…

Listing 13 songs from any genre or period of music from any artist out there, we want you to craft the blueprint for the LP, made up of cuts you feel Rita should draw inspiration from.

Maybe S.O.A.P’s  ‘Ladidi Ladida’  is just the vibe she needs to secure her a #1 single or is Elijah Blake’s Runnin’ Blind the sound she should be going for if it’s critical acclaim she’s after.

It’s completely up to you.

If you’re feeling extra bossy why not tell us how you would promote the album and how you’d ensure it generates sales akin to those of ‘Loud′ and ‘Confessions‘.

Remember, someone from Camp Rita may see this, so every idea counts!

Get creative below!

I think she needs to keep Radioactive and make that the lead single. Other than that the entire album needs to be promoted well and revamped for the US. Rita needs more dance hits and she needs choreography in her vids. I love RITA

  2. Saetana December 24, 2012

She dominated with Ora? Really? LOL, I don’t think she has even sold 100,000 copies, epic fail, the fact they are rejigging the album for the US says a lot about how crap Ora reallly is, RIP is the only decent song I’ve heard from her so far ;o)

  3. Jer December 24, 2012

    Grrrlbye

  4. Teenage Dream (Beyonce’s Weave) December 24, 2012

LMAO so they’ll actually be a US release LMAO. OMG Roc Nation…smh. Anyway this w**** will FLOP even harder in the US, no one and I mean absolutely no one is checking for her. She can name drop Beyonce as much as she wants but it’s simply not going to happen. She will not see LOUD figures at all, hell she won’t even see Music of the Sun figures in the US (she is struggling to see Music of the Sun figures in the UK).

She’ll be lucky to see Basic Instinct figures, which are arguably too high for her. Her “ORA” is now selling for E3.99 in the UK. Sorry Rita Flopa Whora, it just isn’t going to happen. RIP to your career b****, it’s OVA.

    • wrinkle flop ora December 24, 2012

she shaded rih all while jocking her style.

      • AmbeRussell December 25, 2012

but from what i know rita had that style before rihanna….

  6. DOSSOME December 24, 2012

I wish her all the best but i feel Roc Nation is propping her waaaaay too much.Rita needs to make it on her own to warrant such massive promo

  7. : : PLAY N’ SLAY . : . : . . . . . December 24, 2012

Her first album might not have worked anywhere but the UK, but hopefully the next album will.

When you have a lame start, you know all you gotta do is bring the next album.

    To Rita :

Please show us your REAL personality the next era, no more Rihanna DVD-rip.

And I mean what I’m saying.

    God bless you.

    • STAN’ UP December 24, 2012

RITA ORA HAD THE “BEST” START WITH “R.I.P”/”HOW WE DO”.. I mean unless she is DELIVERING SOLID 2nd songs.. everything after that will FLOP!

Rihanna atleast has stand out tracks from EVERY ALBUM!

With Rita, I feel she has NOT had any CULTURAL IMPACT that has made hera stand alone star unlike Rihanna, Beyonce, ADELE..

  8. Kate middleton December 24, 2012

    O’Rihanna, give it up.

  9. RICHANDBLACK11 December 24, 2012

    She bring good music

    • RICHANDBLACK11 December 24, 2012

i meant just bring some good music

  10. QueenOfTheNavy December 24, 2012

The first thing she should do is ditch that dirty stinkin hobo style, hit the gym and work on getting her body s***. Im talking abs, ass and push up bras. Then she needs to tan her skin and get rid of that dirty yellow wig she wears and get a nicer warmer color.

Secondly, she should sing music people that can relate to for a change, what the hell is shine ya light?

    • RICHANDBLACK11 December 24, 2012

hi hun how did the other day workout for you with the fam

  11. ENOUGH ONIKA (0 GRAMMY NOMS…) December 24, 2012

PLEASE don’t release another flop album onto the public. The first one didn’t work cause Rita didn’t know how to be Rita, but she sure knew how to fake being every female artist under the sun. In all honesty though, it’s just not Rita’s time and I don’t know if it will ever be. There’s nothing unique about her with the current pop stars ruling the charts. No innovation on her part and it’s boring. She needs a completely new image (no more blonde) and incorporate her heritage music into pop or something, just figure out a way to be different.

    • STAN’ UP December 24, 2012

AGREE! She has had NO CULTURAL IMPACT to the WORLD OF MUSIC/FASHION/ARTS/MOVIES!

Unlike other female alike, who can be sighted as having a sort of HOLD and POWER of the world of music!

When you deliver OVERLY POP MUSIC! YOU CAN’T EXPECT TO BE DELIVERING 1million ALBUM FIGURES!

  12. honesty December 24, 2012

It seems as if with ORA it was so forced and thought about. She needs to come with something thats not already done. Not these gimmicky Rihanna left overs, thats not hot and no ones buying it. She should work on being more about her country and incorporating that into her music. Thats what made Rihanna original in the first place, she came with that Caribbean Vibe.

Just do your thing girl, then success could come.

    • STAN’ UP December 24, 2012

      YES! The ISLAND girl!

  13. johny blue December 24, 2012

she needs to pair up with any and everyone that was involved in iggy azalea’s trapgold mixtape (diplo, sleigh bells, etc), Robyn’s “body Talk” album, and any indie alternative producers she can bring on board to help push her in that direction. she has the talent and image to help cross over alot of these big indie underground sounds that acts like Lykke li, Santigold and M.I.A have been pushing for years with little to know mainstream recognition. bring in peter, bjorn and John responsible for alot of lykke li’s material, Bloodshy and avant the guys behind Miike Snow and responsible for Britney’s Toxic. Soundcloud.com/tknd

  14. Taeys December 24, 2012

She had me fooled for awhile, I really thought she might be the next big thing, but now I don’t See it. It’s just she has gotten Beyonce, Rihanna level exposure and promo with Keri Hilson sells to show for it. She’s seems nice but I think she’s corny and wouldn’t come off as ‘s***’ in The US. I did like her look initially but it seems she’s aged 5 years since I first saw her a couple months ago. Anywho I guess the Queen sees something in her or maybe it’s her husbands idea but I just don’t see it for Rita in the US or the UK for longer then a couple years. Something seems forced with her. I don’t think she should be signed to Roc Nation either. You would think Jay Z would give a shot at stardom to a beautiful black girl from New York or Some place in America instead of a white girl who looks kinda sorta mixed. Kinda hurts my feelings…

For a successful album here in the US I’d tell her to stay away from urban! Songs like RIP with her clown faced ass would be the biggest joke since Ciara’s back to back uncertified, flop albums. She should stop name dropping Beyonce and name drop Britney Spears and lady Gaga instead maybe Kesha too. If she comes with urban music it will flop harder then Ciara’s last 5 singles. So songs like Britney Spears Toxic, a reductive Adele ballad. And a transcontinental American white trash song meets war torn Eastern European shitpile duet with Kesha should give her a solid debut.

    • Jeff December 24, 2012

You know Jaz-Z aint interested in signing any girl as dar kas him

    • wrinkle flop ora December 24, 2012

NO. she should of signed ablack girl in London. The UK is racist and they do not sign black girls anymore. tHIS WHERE JAYZ could come in handy….if she was like an asian man.

  15. King B>Rihanna December 24, 2012

All i know she better come correct because the UK debut was full of s***(I only liked songs). All the Navy going after Rita Ora because she supposed to be Riri replacement. How about you listen to the music and judge the girl off of that.I swear that these basic b****** on here are 10 years old.You know how much people come for my fav but if that same artist come out with music i like I will support them.B****** need to grow the f*** up.

    • Jeff December 24, 2012

I don’t think that Rita is the Rihanna replacement, i just don’t think Roc Nation like to take risks and followed a formula that they already knew worked. They’re not very savvy business men

      • Jeff December 24, 2012

Oh, and the album was s***!

      • King B>Rihanna December 24, 2012

Jeff you are a pressed f***** that needs to get a f****** life.I’m sure you have not listen to the whole album so bye.

  16. Bristol December 24, 2012

She needs to make herself look more white to be successful in America. Blue contacts and long, straight blonde hair. No more clown makeup. Ditch the grungey London street style. Even if she had it first, she looks like a Rihanna reject. The urban audience won’t support her, so she can forget about that.

  17. Queen Paris Jackson will slay your black faves December 24, 2012

When will this false Rihanna give it up! All that damn promo for this falseness of girl. I have never seen such pathetic attempts to mimic a girl as basic as Riri. She’s hot now but trying to recreate her as if she was that great to begin with! Rihanna aint nobody to be trying to be like, if you have a recording contract! like what the f*** is wrong with Rita? Dumb puppet s*** w**** trying to be like R****! Are times really that f****** bad? You can’t try an imitate someone worth the effort!

  18. Pop Royalty December 24, 2012

Let’s not go and do it for Her , she has the whole ROC team trying to find a way to make her more appealing and marketable ……………….

    I won’t , she’s talented , but there’s something wrong in there tbh.

  19. Alvaro December 24, 2012

Shouldn’t do RnB yet…. Maybe in a following album.

Hot Right Now & RIP & Radioactive as major inspirations.

  20. SLAYRIAH CAREY December 24, 2012

I feel bad for this girl. She’s like the BIGGEST FLOP in the industry. Her time will come , she just needs to keep the faith

  21. Sierra December 24, 2012

    Smh! 🙁

  22. Monstarebel December 24, 2012

    she won’t make it……

    • @PWetsh PEGGYHYLS Wetsh December 24, 2012

      U not God

  23. ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ December 24, 2012

Good luck girl. Maybe the 20 men rumor might help her in the U.S. a la Kim K. or Paris Hilton? She just has to be RITA ORA and not “Rihanna” 2.0

  24. Remey December 24, 2012

They are trying hard to push her has an Urban Pop act. That worked for the UK, but the US won’t receive her like this. She has the sound, but her image is pushed to similarly to Rihannas: edgy. risky, and chic at the same time.

I think they are rushing her too fast. Look at Rihanna! It took her 3 albums to solidify her image. Good Girl Gone Bad was were she found herself. I think this is what RITA should do too. She should focus on the music first and finding a sound.

She has great promo, but it has no direction. It’s just exposure. However, if they don’t craft a solid image behind her, no one will pay attention to her. US needs a reason to listen to your music.

  25. Yo Mammy December 24, 2012

Sextape with someone slightly more popular than her. Then reality show. Then a gimmicky album. She’ll maybe sell about 50,000 in the first week of a month where no body else is dropping their CD and have the #1 album. And also the #1 single on the Dance Charts.

She’s talented but she chooses to gimmick us. So, she should go that route.

  26. wrinkle flop ora December 24, 2012

She needs to give up the music and do reality show like sunset of shahs and she can focus on partying with models and sleeping around. She can sing, but she is not an artist. The girls on ANTM are tall, thin and beautiful……but they are no models, let alone supermodels.

  27. Mark111 December 24, 2012

Go ahead Rita, keep trying, keep trying like Cassie, Tearria Marie, and that Kat chic with flop singles and never released albums. There will never be an ERA of ORA. You want Rihanna’s crown? You better put in the work, cause less then 50k sells and no top 40 hit isn’t gonna do it. NEXT!!!

  28. hellioss December 24, 2012

Well, she needs to stay away from ‘How we do’ style and embrace ‘Roc the life’s one.

  29. Casual December 24, 2012

Wow . . . dozens of posts and no actual song suggestions. (No, I don’t have any either.)

Something with this girl is not connecting. I’ve heard R.I.P. on the radio once or twice, and I’ve seen the video (again) once or twice. They’ve had Rita Ora at all of the awards shows, and she even did an unplugged special on MTV – all for naught.

I think her best song, and the one most suited for success in the U.S., was How We Do. I think boils down to promoting How We Do and buying Rita Ora’s way onto pop radio, one station at a time.

Rita Ora is by no means the first artist to fail to make an instant connection with the American public, and if Roc Nation is serious about this girl, they’ll put the muscle (money) behind her.

    • Touché December 24, 2012

See that’s her problem. It’s the songs she gets stuck with and her image. Her songs are nothing more but unoriginal Rihanna reject songs that do not stand out whatsoever. I think that if she gets creative by incorporating her own culture into her music than people will be interested in her. Also, her image isn’t very fresh so that also has something to do with her failure.

      • Casual December 25, 2012

        Agreed.

  30. MelyB December 24, 2012

I actually bought this album from a UK Amazon seller and put it on par with Jessie J’s debut album – both women can sing but neither had what I’d call a “signature song” to make them stand out. Rita’s intro to the American audience has been so messy & I doubt that she can recover – at least with the urban audience.

I agree with a previous comment that she needs to work with up & coming producers who are inspired by her voice enough to create the “Rita Ora sound”. I don’t think either a pop or r&b audience would support an Adele-type album from her although with her voice she could pull it off.

She could go the Kelis (Fleshtone) or Agnes (Dance Love Pop) route and do euro/dance/disco-ish uptempos mixed with a few Gloria Estefan type ballads. She should stay away from hip/hop influenced pop and r&b type songs – that audience really isn’t accepting her at this time.

    • hellioss December 25, 2012

Jessie J was successful with Domino though, even in the US.

It is nice to see you compare both artists.
When we do so, we see that in this music industry, Jessie J can stand out with her big, soulful, and powerful voice while Rita’s voice is very basic, she doesn’t bring anything special.
So she really needs to bring something new with her own sound and music.

  31. Britbutnotproud December 25, 2012

Rita should take a leaf from Pink’s book and go down the rock/indie route which her voice/image is more suited to (imo) It worked for Pink and Madonna who both started out singing R&B and disco respectively, and there is definitely room for another white female rock artist both in America and Europe

  32. rambambam December 26, 2012

I actually want to see her succeed. My favorite tracks from her album were R.I.P and LOVE AND WAR. The others were kinda “meh”, but I still lover her.

I would like to see her do We Found Love & Beyonce’s Diva esque tracks.
    A combination of electro, pop, & r&b.
Work with Easter dean,The Dream, sia, etc.
A drake,Kanye, jay, or nicki collabo.
I don’t want her tracks to.be busy, and have a memorable hook
Her next video for a new single should have some sort of choreo/story line of course, may be have Colin tiey direct it?

  33. WJ December 26, 2012

    1. Alone – Sistar
    2. Lights – Ellie Goulding
    3. Indestructible – Robyn
    4. Young, Single & S*** – Rita Ora
    5. Girlfriend – *NSYNC
    6. Waiting for the Night – Nelly Furtado
    7. Roc the Life – Rita Ora
    8. Kif’n’dir – Zaho
    9. If You Had My Love – Jennifer Lopez
    10. California King Bed – Rihanna
    11. Get Mine, Get Yours – Christina Aguilera
    12. I’m a S**** 4 U – Britney Spears
    13. Don’t Bother – Shakira

  34. RT December 26, 2012

If Beyoncé sees something in this girl. We know it’s real. Whether it’s 6 months or 6 years, Rita will pop off in the US. She has the personality, talent and the right attitude to break it there. But because of Rob Kardashian’s p**** boy indirects on Twitter, he’s given her a bad name added to the heavy comparisons of Rihanna. Let’s be honst, Rita can sing better than Rihanna. But I love them both in their separate ways.

I have faith in her tbh, but I think she needs to balance on a line between Dance-Pop/R&B.

The tracks, in my opinion she should draw inspiration from are the following:

Rita Ora – Facemelt, Hot Right Now, Radioactive, Love + War, Young, Single S*** & Meet Ya

Beyoncé – Run The World, Lose My Breath, Irreplaceable Sweet Dreams & Upgrade U

    Rihanna – Disturbia

Justin Bieber – As Long As You Love Me

    M.I.A. – Paper Planes & Bad Girls

Conor Maynard – Better Than You

Britney Spears – Break The Ice, S**** 4 U, Gimme More

    Kendrick Lamar – Swimming Pools

I think that these songs, her and her team could draw inspirations or even sample and create a new, distinctive sound that will give her that extra edge she already has and give her a platform to stand-on that separates her from other females in the industry.

  35. BeyonceMyOra December 27, 2012

I think the issue is that, the hype was around Rita Ora and not her album. Believe me, there is a difference between the hype of an artist and their album. (E.g Frank Ocean and channelORANGE)

I think she should have RAW vocals, f*** some of the auto-tune she had on ORA, because she did not need that. We all know that this girl can SANG, her songs just don’t show it. Let Rita be Rita on her US debut album.

I want to hear Jhené Aiko, Frank Ocean, Beyonce and Britney Spears influences on her new album. She needs a distinctive sound and image along with heavy promotion to really catapult her to fame.

  36. Luke 123 December 30, 2012

I really think that Rita is the big thing in the world, and i believe that she will do success in USA… I think that latter of Radioactive she have to lauch “Unfair”… But Rita have to find herself first.. I love her…
