Tommy Mottola Talks Mariah Carey & Michael Jackson On The ‘Today Show’

Published: Tuesday 29th Jan 2013 by Sam

The name Tommy Mottola is one which factors into the success and drama narratives of many a musician. Indeed, in a number of such cases, the music exec has played both the “hero” and the “villain”.

Case, point his ex-wife Mariah Carey.

As reported earlier this month, Mottola has penned a book entitled ‘Hitmaker’ which spotlights his illustrious career, as well addresses Carey’s claims that he was too controlling and abusive both “mentally and emotionally” during his time as her manager and husband in the early to mid 90s.

Naturally, then, when hitting the promo rounds in support of the biography, the 63 year old was quizzed about Mimi, as well as another megastar who famously hit out at himMichael Jackson.

Peep his words Mariah, MJ, and more on the Today Show below…

Released the day before Mariah’s American Idol debut, ‘Hitmaker’ is available at book stores now.

    YASSSS! Stan for Queen Bey!

    • ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ January 29, 2013

We’re talking about Tommy 👿 also known as the former CEO of Columbia also known as an industry titan, he was f course going to say nice things about Beyonce, Michael, and Mariah. He isn’t a dumb insider you see on twitter saying what he wants, he is a calculated m***********.

      • GREG January 30, 2013

I wouldnt be surprised if he had something to do with Michaels murder…Michael went on a public campaign against Tommy Mottola which ultimately got Tommy fired from Sony.

  2. SLAYRIAH CAREY January 29, 2013

Is Thalia or whatever they call her coming out with an album or something. Or is this just to help is book.
Lol… He’s clearly USING Michael and Mariah to get attention!

  3. SLAYRIAH CAREY January 29, 2013

Anyways… Mariah looks STUNNING in this picture.
I always loved her smile. <3

  4. ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ January 29, 2013

Years later, he cannot leave her alone. Notice how like a true abusive man he says “I made her a star” and he never actually denies being abusive or not, instead he says “Getting a 20 years old to become is star is a lot of pressure….blah blah blah” or something along those lines. He KNOWS what he did and he will continue to not leave her alone.

He is the devil in the words of Michael Jackson that had Mariah followed, stealing her songs and giving it to J-Lo, paying people to attack her on radios, etc just to prove to his ego and her that she wouldn’t make it without him and she almost didn’t because she had an emotional and mental breakdown.

And now after years she is married and had kids, he finds ways to still hurt her. This vile, nasty man played Mariah’s insecurities and always and her feel like without him she was nothing.

I am not the one to wish death on others but I hope you have everything coming your way along with Clive Davis and Joe Jackson.

Such a sad day today after watching that Cissy interview. SMH

    • MC Lovers January 29, 2013

Yes I agree, And the Cissy Houston interview was just heart wrenching.

      • ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ January 29, 2013

I know, its always sad seeing a parent talk about losing their kid. The saddest part was knowing that when the world thought Whit was happy, they were her saddest moments in her life. I hate the industry for what it did to Mike, Whit, and many more. 🙁

      • MC Lovers January 29, 2013

Sad indeed, i feel the same way most stars are made out of misery. to be exploited

    • wrinkle flop ora, January 29, 2013

Not joe jackson. He parented the way MORE black men should. if they did, there would be less ” chicago murders ”

        ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ

Why do you always deflect everything when it’s pertaining to Mariah by bringing up Whitney and a host of other singers? attacked? It never fails!

      • ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ January 29, 2013

I ain’t got the time or energy today. Obviously if you read what I wrote you’d see that I said I saw Cissy’s interview so I was addressing Tommy, Clive, Joe, etc that used these starts to their ultimate demise. Like get a grip, you have some problems and the sooner you realize that you’re NEVER going to be satisfied with what I have to say, the easier your mind will be at rest Mother Theresa. I talked about Tommy/Mariah for like 95% of my comment and I didn’t even mention Whitney’s name in the post. 🙄 Goddamn the problems on this site.

  5. MC Lovers January 29, 2013

    F*** TOMMY MOTTOLA

    MOVING ON, MC is gorgeous

  6. eric January 29, 2013

If he were such the mastermind he proclaims himself to be, he would have many successes beyond MC. The fact that Mariah is all people want to talk about with him tells me that it’s actually Mariah that made HIS career; not the other way around.

    • ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ January 29, 2013

He was essential to Mariah’s earlier commercial success as she was essential to his success. He needed her talent, marketability, looks, and diversity as she needed his label support, money support and promotional support. I don’t know why he’s acting like he did all the work when he knew damn well that he was lucky for finding the “white Whitney” in his words to compete with Clive Davis. Both assholes.

  7. Mark111 January 29, 2013

Some time to become a star, you have to put in the work. From MJ to Britney, they put in the work and they blame the people who pretty much made them a superstar. Look at MC now, she’s kinda lazy, LA put her to work in 05 and after that she became lazy again. MJ did have a tone of yes men around him and look what happened. His family tried to help, but if you said something about this problem, you were out of his life. Brit, when she became “free” in 05 was when her down fall began. Add Tina to it, DC. Now I’m not saying that these people like Joe Jackson and Tommy was good people, but being strict made them superstar vs has beens like other falling artist.

    • ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ January 29, 2013

Put her to work? What is she? His s****? Ch….Mariah is lazy? Is that why she writes, composes, produces, and helps direct her albums and music instead of being like Britney (your laughable example of “hard-working”) and doesn’t get producers to write, compose, and produce her songs/albums for her? Interesting.

      • Mark111 January 29, 2013

Oh, I guess her past albums had been hits and high sellers. She was singing her ass off when she was with Tommy and started bullshiting and getting necked right after, flop after flop and that horrible movie, she was done, along with Whitney. But who revived that career? JD, why? Cause LA Reed told her to work with him, we wouldn’t even be talking or speaking her name if it wasn’t for that album. What did MC2 do? Nothing, how bout the one after that (I can’t even name that s***** album). Her LIVE perfromace or lack of sucks and that last single triumphant was just sad, now she’s on AI next to a new comer that bitched her out. A place where one has been goes, Paula/ J.lo. As for Britney, she danced her ass of in the 2000’s, now she’s a zombie, but back then she was that chic. MC didn’t even want to do the Xmas album that is a yearly classic, so her choices are never the best. And last, I’m not going back N forth with a stan that can’t even use their own damn name or clever enough to come up with one. Sit the f*** down and get a life, everything I said is fact, MC is not a god, and isn’t that great. Waving your hand around isn’t performing nor are those pre recorded whistles.

      • ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ January 29, 2013

The amount of incorrect information in your post isn’t even funny.

        1. Mariah wanted to do Glitter for 2 years before she was able to do the movie (meaning while under Tommy’s company control) but that’s beside what we’re talking about.
        2. Mariah didn’t get lazy, she was over-worked, hence why she had her breakdown (if you cared to reserach you’d know that).
        3. Of course she was phenomenal while under Tommy’s supervision because he got to her at the age where her voice wasn’t effected by constant usage of her voice and non-stop recording, performing. By the time she finished her contract with Sony 10 years later, her voice was never the same.
        4. L.A never told Mariah to work with JD, actually Mariah wanted to work with him because they worked together on Daydream and even Charmbracelet (you know the one that flopped before Emancipation? 🙄 ) again, if you’d done your research you’d know that JD, B.C**, and Mariah have worked together for YEARS before Emancipation. The reason why Emancipation was such a success was because Mariah perfected her art and she had the full label support like in the 90s again.

As for the rest of the b******* you’re talking about I’m going to ignore because 1) my username is not related to Mariah rather than it is to my gmail 2) I never said Mariah was a god so you pulled that s*** out of your ass much like the “facts” you presented. 3) Don’t care if you go back and forth with me, you’re obviously wrong for the proof I’ve provided above. Touche dear, touche and I was suppose to be the stan 😆 pffttt. Good day 😆

      • Mark111 January 29, 2013

I know that she worked with JD before, but she even said it in an interview that LA said “You made some great somes with JD, why wont you go work with him again.” Over worked? Yes, but don’t forget that she had a #1 hit for each year in the 90’s and sold millions of records. Don’t brag on your 18 #1’s and 200M albums and then cry cause you was over worked. I think she’s just lazy, she may not have that same voice at 20, but she can still sing, why better then she has been the few years. I’m sure a coach was hard on Jardan, but look at him now. If you want to be one of the best, you’re gonna have to work for it and hard if you want to be the best. And last, your user name is MC with f****** butterflies, plus you comment on everyone’s opinion that didn’t favor MC, so don’t come here with that BS.

      • ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ January 30, 2013

I’m just going to ignore the majority of your b******* because like I said before Mariah worked with JD before and after Emancipation so it was inevitable that she worked with him, so the rest still falls. She already sold all that in the 90s so what makes you think she’d keep on selling like that in the 00’s? Its a natural thing and the fact that you can’t even understand that is just pathetic. Lastly the butterflies in my username is for the Mariah fandom but my name is for my e-mail (michelecain21@gmail.com). Nice of you for not knowing your facts once again.

  8. Alan January 29, 2013

I don’t quite understand the negativity surrounding Tommy Mottolla but what I do have to say is this…

He and Mariah divorced in 1997. Although Mariah has come out and spoke of the ‘controlling’ nature towards Tommy, she has NEVER publicly slated him nor made him out to be a bad guy so, therefore, Tommy needs to rid himself of his $1Billion ego and leave the woman to get on with her life.

As for Clive Davis and Whitney – yes, I know that my Queen was exploited at times by her record label but there MANY other reasons as to which catered to her demise, Clive wasn’t even a fraction of it. Clive truly cared for Whitney, as he did Dionne Warwick as he was her manager circa. 1971-1978, and wanted the best out of her but her brother, Gary Houston, introducing Whitney to Drugs – speed and cocaine – the backlash she was receiving from the Black community circa. 1987-1990 – as they thought her success was too polished and her music lacked ‘soul’ and so did her voice etc… and the turbulent marriage to Bobby is what killed her.

    MY THOUGHTS.

    • ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ January 29, 2013

Clive cared about the profit Whitney brought him, that’s why when she wanted to stop making music by 2001 he forced her to release “Just Whitey” even though by then, according to her, she lost her passion for music. So in short, she was going through some serious s*** and he didn’t bother to help her because he is a businessman, much like Tommy, not her friend or father.

      • Alan January 29, 2013

I agree with you… But, in all honesty, I don’t understand why Whitney would then go ahead to sign a 7-year contract with Arista worth $50M – the third highest sum for an entertainer post- Janet and Michael.

I just think it was the Drugs that was TRULY disparraging Whitney…

Btw, did you see the Oprah interview with Cissy and Gary – Her brother admitted that he was the one who FIRST introduced Whitney to Drugs in late 1987, not Bobby. Oprah then gave Bobby a public apology for thinking that he had cause the majority of her demise.

      • ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ January 29, 2013

I did watch that interview, I knew beforehand that Bobby wasn’t the one who introduced her to drugs, but I never knew it was her own brother. It was really sad watching that. At the end of the day, it was Whitney choice to do the drugs, she was an adult and she knew what the consequences were so it falls on her shoulders and no one else and yes, the drugs were a big part of her unhappiness as well as the industry and the pressure put on her and her instrument (her voice) as well as what Clive wouldn’t let her do, which was be set free and not be forced to record albums.

    • Mark111 January 29, 2013

Sorry, I agree with MC. If Clive “cared” for Whitney, then that party would’ve been cancelled as soon at the news broke. F*** that “Whitney would’ve wanted it to go on.” B*******, if you care for someone, you’re gonna stop whatever going on if that person dies. TO make it worse that her body wasn’t even cold yet, (I can go lower) Her body was floors above the party. How can someone get on camera and not break down after all of that, or feel strange or bad. Not just him, everybody at that party, from Monica & Brandy to Clive. Just sick, and I’m not a huge WH fan, but her music was played in my mom’s house all the time.

Tommy Motola needs to come back to Sony. He must be sad to see what Sony has become now. Rita Whora? He would never have that clone flop b**** sponging money they way she is now.

Where are the other people that Tommy has worked. Look at his wife, Thalia. He tried to make her successful as mariah and he FAILED!!

I think you meant to say: “Tommy would be nothing without Mariah.”

It must hurt that Mariah has been relevant for 20+years and can still sing her ass off while Xtincta isn’t even at 15 years and her tired ass can’t sing an unstrained note to save her life. Not to mention her last 2 albums have flopped hard.

This man is a b****. He knows he abussed Mariah. End of story. Of course nor physically. But there was a moment for 2 or 3 years between Music Box and Daydream when he started to control everything. Mariah started dressing like a priest, a thing she didn´t do before from 1990 to 1993. That was not her, her friends said many times she was isolated during that period in the mansion, etc. Thankfully she broke free soon enough in 1997, after only 5 years of marriage. She was so brave, there was much money on the table too. But after that she still had to suffer the worst part. She kept working non stop anyway but without the label support she had before. By 2001, with the pressure of having more #1´s cos she always had them, the new label pressure, the break up with her lover Luis Miguel that year, etc, etc she had a meltdown. And much to our surprise, she recovered in only a couple of months like it was nothing. And back to work, she sang at the superbowl and started preparing her next album Charmbracelet

I mean, she´s awesome, and I´m so happy the industry and some evil media and business men didn´t destroy her. Like they did with michael and Whitney for example. You need to understand these legendary superstars way were bigger than any superstar today. And the pressure was so much bigger. That Cissy Houston interview… I felt so sad. I still don´t know the whole truth. But the 80´s were not the same as 2013, people were more narrowminded. After her unprecedent success part of the black comunity started blaming her for I don´t know what, her mother didn´t like her best friend (and maybe her lover), her brother Michael (not Gary) introduced her to drugs (not blaming him cos both of them were young, with money, and it wasn´t seen as bad in the industry as it is now), the pressure about maintaining that incredible level of vocal greatness, etc. It had to be hard. I think in a way she fully embraced the black community by marrying Bobby Brown (of course her mother didn´t like that either). I don´t know, too many people controlling her… by the time she finally broke free it was for the worse and she got stuck in that marriage and teh rest we know it. Maybe if she had stayed with that friend of hers… who knows. Does somebody know where is she? Did she die? Did she dissappear the moment she married Bobby just like that?

RIP baby Whitney Houston. We´ll always love you and your talent will remain with us every day thanks to recordings. Memorable
Congrats to Mariah Carey for surviving. I love that girl and she still keeps making music. I mean… what a woman. Thank u Mariah

    • ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ January 30, 2013

I may need somebody to name a SUPERstar who has been able to make it to SUPER-stardom without a terrific (what you people call controlling) manager.

    I’ll wait.

Managers DO their part which is getting their acts on that special pedestal, that’s their job. Most artists do not agree with everything in the process but they respect the outcome they get out of it.

  20. Geezy January 30, 2013

Both Mariah and Tommy benefitted from one another in different ways. Thankfully Tommy gives Mimi her just due for being a great singer/songwriter. But we the public must understand Mariah was Tommy’s greatest discover so there always be those questions.

This guy Tommy is another corporate thug who steals from and f**** people. He and a handful of others need to be taken into the street and shot. They are a BIG reason why the whole music industry has gone to Hell. All areas of business that were once clean are now covered in turds. And they dress up like talent and do their pretend dance. At least Michael Jackson could dance. More than I can say for all those copycat bastards we see today. All good music has been written before the 2000s. Anything after that stinks. That is why the industry is trying everyday to think of new ways to corrupt the youth so they will buy anything filthy. Filth always sells. Especially when nothing good can be created. All talent no longer works for the music industry. Just mafia style suits that test all new talent through their a*** orifices.
