‘Lost Ones’ songstress Lauryn Hill has been sentenced to three months in prison by a Newark judge today, for failing to pay taxes to the tune $1.8 million.
Full story below…
Sentenced to three months behind bars, three months of house arrest and a further 9 months of supervised release, the entertainer was sentenced after raising $970,000 to pay off her debut…not enough to keep her out of prison.
Speaking to the sentencing judge, she explained today:
“I needed to be able to earn so I could pay my taxes, without compromising the health and welfare of my children, and I was being denied that.”
This unfortunate news marks the latest tax related drama to hit the world of Black music, after Rap icon Lil Kim came under the heavy hand of the law and media for allegedly evading tax from the years 2002-2009, as explained here.
Lauryn has up until July 8th to report to prison.
Our thoughts and prayers are with her family.
