Chart Check: Trey Songz’ ‘Chapter V’ Continues Journey To ‘Gold’

Published: Monday 13th May 2013 by David

As reports surrounding its follow up heat up, Trey Songz’ latest album ‘Chapter V’ continued to make its way to Gold status this week, when sales generated in the US placed it even closer to the 500,000 unit mark.

Sales and stats await you below…

In the last week, the Troy Taylor led piece moved 1,995 copies, bringing its combined US sales to 372,793.

Of course, while some may snigger at these digits considering they come almost a year after the album was released, there are some- namely us- who are a little confused as to why so little has been done to force feed the release to the masses.

For, with debut digits of 135,000 units, the project’s opening week saw him surpass sales scored by albums which boasted bigger singles than his own- peaking at #1 on the Billboard 200. A feat, that should have seen Camp Songz flex every possible to ensure the project enjoyed a consistent sales run.

Unfortunately, despite packing some of his strongest material to date, the album has under performed….when all signs initially pointed to commercial glory.

In saying that, with only 100,000 or so units away from hitting the Gold mark, Trey’s undeniable talent has seen him speed past a number (if not all) of his R&B contemporaries with these numbers- a positive indication of what the world can expect from him if ‘V’s follow up ticks all the necessary post release promo boxes.

On a singles tip, ‘Heart’ was certified Gold back in September for sales of over 500,000 units while his T.I assisted ‘2 Reasons’ enjoyed the same feat. This, after his Nicki Minaj backed ‘Bottoms Up’ was certified 3x Platinum for sales of over 3 million units- pulled from #1 album, ‘Passion, Pain and Pleasure‘.

  4. STR8FACTS May 13, 2013

This post was soooooo shady lmao

Nonetheless, I think those sales are definitely a reflection of the material on this album. I think ‘Ready’ was so well received because at the time, no one was actually making that kind of R&B music and point blank the music was hot. But time and time again we see that this generation gets bored very easily and sticking to the script isn’t always going to work in your favor. Trey still has fans out there but he needs to stop trying to recreate ‘Ready’ and be a little more experimental, innovative, and fearless with his music. I doubt he’ll stray too far off but I know he can make good R&B music without being boring because that is all he’s giving these days zZzZzZzZzZz …

370k?! Lmao that album will go gold in about 7 years! No ones checking for him anymore. He became stale after READY. All of his music sounds the same now. #PoorDat #FLOP

Gay Songz makes the same 5 songs on every album, especially with singles.
    1: Club banger
    2: S** song
    3: Not-as-explicit-as-the-second-single s** song
4/5: Song about how wrong he was in the past and is ready to move forward with this girl
    Every album.

I get annoyed when TGJ acts like an album is on its way to ‘Gold,’ when it’s actually got quite a distance before it. They made the same ridiculous post about Keyshia Cole’s album. If you’re album isn’t at around 450k, then it’s not nearing Gold status. And if he’s under 400k and only averaging 1k a week, then Gold ain’t happening for a good long while — if ever.

Meanwhile, WTF is “Gold” anyway? Unless you’re a brand new artist whose album has been out for no more than 6 months, that’s nothing to celebrate. Trey is an established act who has been out for 10 years and has five albums. Gold ain’t s***. He should be doing significantly better than that. When his album nears platinum status, then start the celebratory countdown. I don’t hate Trey, but lets not act like his album is doing well, is nearing Gold…or that Gold is even cause for celebration. The truth is that Chapter V is a commercial bomb.

Chris Brown’s last album is selling just as bad. Somewhere, R. Kelly is lol’ing. But I respect that he’s still supporting the album, you wouldn’t even think it’s a flop, BUT Try Songz never was a seller, I don’t even think he has a platinum album.

I blame his PR team. They need to be fired. They have been horrible with every album he has released.
