Natalie Cole has showered praise on fellow icon Beyonce this week, billing her the ‘new Madonna’ in an interview with The Grio.
Want to know what she said?
Peep her accurate assessment of the ‘Standing on the Sun‘ star below… Hitting the publication to dish on her new album ‘Natalie Cole En Espanol’, the daughter of the late Nat King Colesaid the following of Bey:
“I think that it’s going to be interesting to see where Beyoncé’s career goes. Because now I would say, she is the new Madonna. Girls want to look like her; they want to dress like her… I think that she could be a great influence. She’s a nice girl, definitely not a “diva” in the sense of what we like to use as that definition.”
While the comparison may not immediately make sense, it does when given some thought. For, while Madonna’s cause lies in her art and Beyonce’s in her voice/performance style, they share the unique position of being the blue print for the standard held by society when judging their contemporaries and creative heir apparents.
For example, in the same way a controversial hit making blonde couldn’t rock the Pop charts without being compared to the ‘Material Girl’, it’s impossible to watch a Pop belle rock out in a front of a wind machine without being compared to Bey.
In adding to this, both ladies enjoy the unique- and at times uncomfortable position- of standing the test of time and watching acts they inspired ‘grow up’ to become their closest rivals in today’s territory.
In Madonna’s case, watch girls grow up inspired by her, who then go on to inspire a third generation of starlets- young enough to be her daughters.
In Bey’s case, these being Rihanna and Rita Ora after her.
