Exclusive: Brandy – “I Am Working On A New Album”

Published: Tuesday 8th Oct 2013 by Sam

After rocking R&B with comeback set ‘Two Eleven’ last Fall, Brandy has her eyes set on its follow-up.

During our recent Google Hangout with the Vocal Bible, she waxed honest on many a topic including her hotly anticipated new album.

Speculation ran rampant this Summer that the set was a’cooking after the singer was snapped in the studio with hitmaker Mike Will.

Ever keen to ask the questions you really want answers to, we quizzed R-Rocka about the rumors – which she confirmed as true.

Dishing to Clara Amfo, the 34-year-old also relayed her producer wish-list for the as-yet-untitled project.

Flip the hood for quotes, pics, and full video…

On her next record:

“I can confirm that I’m working on a new album. I can definitely confirm that I’m working on a new album. Hmm hmm.”

On her producer wish-list:

“I would love to work with Mike Wil again. You see, my fiance works with Mike Will, so I’ve got a connection with…Mike Will (laughs). Yes, he’s everywhere – on billboards and magazine covers, but I’m sure I have a shot with him.

I’d also love to love with Timbaland again. And I’d love to work with Pharrell.”

On experimenting with different sounds on new album:

“I’ll definitely be toying around with new sounds. That is the beauty of “

(Re-teaming with) Rodney Jerkins would be interesting too.

  5. Lovebird (Prism – 10.22.13) October 8, 2013

Well I just hope RCA gives her a budget this time, not a Kelly Rowland budget I hope.

Two Eleven era was a mess.

    • B**** I Can’t Even Spell Welfare October 8, 2013

That budget had me fuming–it was ridiculous!

      • Dev October 8, 2013

But the album was… still is badass

    • Dev October 8, 2013

      Except for the music…..

  6. Lovebird (Prism – 10.22.13) October 8, 2013

Any word on how Tamar’s album is doing?

    • Savannah October 8, 2013

      She sold 200k so far

      • notadummy October 11, 2013

        K. Michelle?

  7. Ernest October 8, 2013

I’m ready! Two Eleven was amazing and I’m sure album 7 will be just that. So happy that I won’t have to wait another 4 years for a Brandy record. Let’s get it Brandy. Glad to see you still grinding.

  8. xedos October 8, 2013

    No one cares

    • Gracious Me October 8, 2013

You cared enough to read the post and then comment on it. If this isn’t love…

      • Dev October 8, 2013

Yes! Read this b****! They take all this effort to talk crap.

  9. Career Ender October 8, 2013

She’s one of the best singers out today.

But her last album was not that good compared to the 10/10 that was Human

Brandy you are one of the few artists that makes GOOD music

    • Gracious Me October 8, 2013

Partly disagree. I also stan for Human but Two Eleven was amazing too. Them vocals!

      • KNUCK October 8, 2013

two eleven didn’t seem as cohesive as “Human”, but it was an amazing album. Wasn’t handled right. But also both albums give you two different sounds. She will never release an album that sounds mostly like one of her past albums. She can’t do it (Especially Full Moon) and she won’t try.

      • Dev October 8, 2013

I agree with you also. i love Brandy, her vocals and her music but in terms of the albums the order of favourite will depend from person to person because i would find Human my least favourite and 2/11 somewhere in the top 3 in total.

But i am so looking forward to this album. Any news on release dates TGJ?
Until then i will have to do with The Robert Glasper Experiment track thats coming out

    • UMo October 8, 2013

      Your endorsement means nothing.

  10. MUSICHEAD October 8, 2013

Brandy hated Human and so did a lot of her fans. I don’t think it was a terrible album but it definitely was her worst album to date. She didn’t really have any strong singles on that album.

    • KNUCK October 8, 2013

this is true about strong singles.. at a time when her fans had waited so long and the industry was fickle as ever, it just left a bad taste in many people’s mouth that she didn’t “win” that era. It was a great album if people can forget about the circumstances surrounding it. I love “Right Here” single though and many songs on that album!

  11. NT October 8, 2013

If they put a big budget behind her , she could do it

  12. Arie October 8, 2013

I love Human but my personal favourate is still Full Moon. I wont lie I didn’t give 2/11 a chance because there was too much talk about the late Whitney so I thought it was a tribute album and I’m not in to those.

    • 4everAmanda October 8, 2013

You’re missing out. Most of the album was recorded before Whitney died. The only connection it has to Whitney is the title. Go and buy it!

  15. Gracious Me October 8, 2013

HATERS where are you? You’re missing your cue…

  16. B**** I Can’t Even Spell Welfare October 8, 2013

“Human” has definitely grown on me over the years. “Shattered Heart” is an absolute masterpiece. I would probably rank it last in her discography though but that’s saying a lot when ALL of your albums are good. “Never Say Never” is still my favorite.

For those who haven’t given “Two Eleven” a chance, do it. It’s great.

    • RoyalKev October 8, 2013

^ Pretty much all of this! Full Moon is my fav though!

      • B**** I Can’t Even Spell Welfare October 8, 2013

        “Full Moon” is brilliant.

What do you think about “Afrodisiac?” This album has an almost cult following. It reminds me of the way people revere Janet’s “The Velvet Rope.” Some Brandy fans believe this is THE masterpiece of her catalogue.

      • Tamartian #1 October 8, 2013

Full moon is my fave, then Afro and Two Eleven. Afro was a great album it has a lot of gems. It was so underrated, poor Bran

      • Teflon Boy October 8, 2013

I agree with ‘B**** I can’t even Spell Welfare’ (that name lol!) Afro’ is her left-field artistic risk album. For Rihanna it’s Rated R.., etc. I think every artist needs that project or era that fully breaks with convention and trend to truly deliver something brave and artistic. IMO that album doesn’t have to chart highly (in most cases it doesn’t, due to it being so niche) but it’s highly important to an artist’s overall credibility. It’s the reason music lovers will defend you against criticism of being a hack or a soulless trend follower.

      • RoyalKev October 8, 2013

        @ B**** I Can’t Even Spell Welfare

I truly love certain songs from Afrodisiac (Necessary, Where You Wanna Be, Focus is just bananas), but Brandy’s discography is not to be toyed with. It’s hard ranking her albums. All I know is that Full Moon is the clear winner (for me), followed by NSN, Two Eleven and Brandy. Afro and Human would have to duke it out for fifth place (even those two albums would score an 8/10 in my book).

        @Teflon Boy
So well said, as usual. I’m not a Rih, but RR is her only album that truly earned my respect (although I like some of what she’s done on Loud and GGGB).

      • B**** I Can’t Even Spell Welfare October 8, 2013

Seeing all of this Brandy love makes me so happy! 🙂

@Royalkev, you’re gonna make me break my “Full Moon” back out for real.

@TEFLON BOY, I totally agree with you about the left field albums. So many of my favorite albums are those left field albums, including Rihanna’s “Rated R.” It’s so good. And blame Nicki for my crazy name! lol!

In terms of “Afrodisiac,” I honestly didn’t love it at first but I have definitely grown fond of it. “I Tried” is probably in my top 5 Brandy songs of all time. “Who Is She 2 You,” “Focus,” “Where I Wanna Be,” and “Should I Go” are also great.

    • RoyalKev October 8, 2013

      *Rih fan

  17. Savannah October 8, 2013

Brandy could slay if her label gave her more freedom. THEY always pick her singles, and we see how that worked out for Two Eleven (Wildest Dreams). She needs a whole new team. I know she loves her Starz, but she cannot just cater to them. The thing I love about Brandy is that she’s not afraid to try new things. I’m totally looking forward to a new era.

  18. KIKI October 8, 2013

No one cares, it will flop harder than Ciara!

    • New Life/Queen Monica October 8, 2013

nothing on this earth, besides nelly fertado has ever flopped worse than ciara.

  19. Rosie October 8, 2013

      MAD???????????

      • Rosie October 8, 2013

Kii @ you thinking that I care if my fave will be on a TGJ hangout.
She’s too busy campaigning for her 2014 Oscar win. What is T***** doing? Shoving a blue waffle down her dirty ass vag?

  20. Lovebird (Prism – 10.22.13) October 8, 2013

So is Bangerz out today? Any predictions yet?

  21. KIKI October 8, 2013

@fake like daddy caca is the biggest troll here. The h** always talks about Rosie/Lovebird as if it is not worse then them. It’s always in Beyonce post talking negatively. And his fav is a gimmick.

  22. John dee October 8, 2013

Whats the point in putting out new music when no ones buys it.

  23. Chic soul October 8, 2013

Brandy always ALMOST gets it but not quite. I will applaud her although the 211 era was a complete bomb, her energy has been off the richter. Brandys performance skills have totally blossomed. She’s up there with Bey these days….yes….BEYONCE! Though her music hasn’t popped off, she’s kept herself busy with acting and touring while her counterparts have been LAZY and/or Kardashian-esque socialites. Let’s hope that B-Rocka gets it right this time around.

  24. KangBey October 8, 2013

I want her to have a Miguel collaboration tbh…i need those 90’s teas B Rocka…

  25. christinastherealtalent October 8, 2013

That is the problem with working with producers everybody else is working with….the productions are all recycled from one another. This time around, I want a “BRANDY” album. Not one where you’re plugging somebody else’s career (ahem Chris) or you release 2 singles then move onto making another album. Promote the damn thing properly and you should be able to hit gold …just give us mixture of Never Say Never/Full Moon/Afrodisiac esque album.

    • Chic soul October 8, 2013

But Brandys albums never sound like anyone else’s. If I’m not mistaken, she was the first female R&B singer to have a mike Will production. It would’ve been a hit single, but WD bombed and RCA refused to release anything else. Brandy can work with every hot producer at the moment but her music won’t sound like any of her counterparts. She puts that Brandy sound on everything she does. It’s her signature.

      • thetruth October 8, 2013

        @Chic Sou
Kelly Rowland was the 1st r&b female to work with Mike Will Made w/ Future Neva End and then her single #1.

      • Tamartian #1 October 8, 2013

Wasn’t Brandys album released in Oct 2012? Kelly’s stuff came along in 2013, so Bran was the 1st

      • thetruth October 8, 2013

        @Tamartian 1

No tht is not true… Mike Will Made released Kellys #1 single on his OWN personal mix tape way b4 Brandy dropped her album. The song was also on Kellys deluxe album as well but not on the main bcuz it had already been released prior. Early tht year he also produced the remix 2 Futures Neva End song tht Kelly was featured on which was very successful on urban radio… oh how we forget so quick… Mike Will Made didnt become popular until after Future & Kelly worked with him… as 4 Brandy idk what song she did tht got major exposure for u ppl to even think tht she was the 1st female rnb singer to work with him. He hand picked out Kelly himself to be on Futures remix…

    • KNUCK October 8, 2013

right @ chic soul.. she always creates her own thing with each producer. she was one of the first to work with Mike Will on female R&B tip and could have had it released to radio first if they moved in time. “Do you know” is still the bomb.com.. That song still doesn’t sound like mike will’s other stuff.. It goes hard, yet is so smooth and sensual at the same time.. prettty epic actually!

  26. Molly October 8, 2013

Aint no one checking for this B****! #SorryNotSorry

    • Chic soul October 8, 2013

      Ciara?

    • Gracious Me October 9, 2013

      Definitely!

  27. JFB October 8, 2013

Her & Monica are RNB Gems…. Love them both.

  28. RoyalKev October 8, 2013

Glory! I’m already here for 2014!

    • doubline47 October 8, 2013

2014 will probably be good in music! We have Azealia banks, beyonce, rihanna, maybe usher, brandy and adele to look forward to

      • UMo October 8, 2013

Take away Rihanna, and I’d agree.

  29. ASIPOFBRANDY October 8, 2013

I watched the hangout with B and I was too amped when she said she was making a new album. I am just praying that she gets back with LaShawn Daniels and Rodney cause they were the bomb together. #QueenBee #VocalBible

    • Chic soul October 8, 2013

I’ve always been on the fence about Rodney & Brandy getting back together. Even prior to Human I just thought their relationship had ran its course. I would love to see Brandy work with Diplo, Noah(Drakes prod), Drake, Miguel, Warryn Campbell(He Is)…pretty much anyone who can bring out that darker Brandy sound. Rodney did it in the 90/ early 00’s…but today, not so much.

      • ASIPOFBRANDY October 8, 2013

I said Rodney because the chemistry they have and LaShawn wrote the bulk of Tamar’s new album and it’s really hot! I think you named some other people that I could see her working with like Noah and Warryn but I don’t see it with her Diplo.

      • Teflon Boy October 8, 2013

I love that you reference the darker Brandy sound.., her vocal sound to me is so naturally optimistic yet gritty and full-bodied sweet that the production has to have edge. I think that’s why most people (inc. herself) don’t really rate Human. Yes, there was quality material here and there but the production lacked bite. I agree however that I don’t want her working with uber-trending producers, as such that all the RnB girls are using. Let’s leave that to Beyonce and Kelly shall we. Brandy needs to incorporate a Bjork-esque aesthetic into her RnB leanings…, just start with ‘What About Us’ i.e. all the odd little clicks and crunches in that and work from there. Think a more robust and Industrial RnB ‘Vespertine’.

      • B**** I Can’t Even Spell Welfare October 8, 2013

@Teflon Boy,”Think a more robust and Industrial RnB ‘Vespertine’.

        Yes!!!!!!!!! I.would.die.

    • RoyalKev October 8, 2013

I have to agree. A Brandy & Darkchild reunion would be perfection! I love the experimental sounds that Bran was able to come up with in teaming up with different producers ( like Mike City, Sean Garrett, Bangladesh, Kanye, etc), but the chemistry she has with Rodney is like no other.

  30. Mark111 October 8, 2013

Ok, this is what Brandy and all these R&B girls have to do. You have to have a plan. Like Bey and Rihanna and all these pop chicks, they have it all mapped out. Don’t throw out “buzz” single til one stick and THAN plan for the album. Like Rih and Gaga, here’s the date for the 1st single, here’s the date for the video, raido release, 2nd single, video date, album release date, promo dates, tour dates.

What Brandy, Ciara and Kelly has been doing is throwing out singles, seeing if it charts, THAN (if it even charts) after countless pushbacks, then drops a date for the album 5 months later. By that time, your single is old. And dropping 5 or 6 tracks off the album doesn’t help at all, why would I buy your album when half of it been released?

Because they never have it mapped out is why their promo is horrible. To get on these shows, you can’t just call up the next day, these shows are planned months in advance. That’s why their albums dates are always so far off.

If they don’t take control of their careers, then they will forever sell 100k albums and that’s not in the first few weeks, that’s 100k period.

  31. King October 8, 2013

    Glowrayyyy!

  32. BITCHPLEASEEEEE October 8, 2013

SAM FYI THIS ISN’T NEWS. SMFH

  33. King October 8, 2013

Let’s just pray she releases more than two singles…

  34. Tamartian #1 October 8, 2013

I am rooting for my girl Bran. Her vocals are a beast

  35. CzarM October 8, 2013

Brandy’s problem is that she has a terrible team behind her. She needs a manager/agent/A&R/publists with a shark mentality that will shrewdly bargain, barter, manipulate, blackmail and/or threaten on her behalf. Her team tries to rely on the general public having good will where Brandy is concerned, and hopes that people will have a soft spot for the singer who made “I Wanna Be Down” and “The Boy Is Mine” so much that they’ll cop her new joint. Everyone in Brandy’s team, including her, needs to be more aggressive and strategic.

    • Chance October 8, 2013

ITA. Brandy needs someone POWERFUL in the industry with connections and a reputation backing her. Up to now, she’s always been managed by her family, first her mother and now her cousin. Brandy needs Benny Medina for a manager and L.A. Reid backing her music.

What I also think would send her next album into overdrive is if she covered Aretha Franklin and George Michael’s “I Knew You Were Waiting For Me” with Zayn Malik of One Direction, and released THAT as a first single. It would be a definite hit, reintroduce her to the public and to a whole new, younger, audience. I’ve had that idea cooking in my head forever now. I hope someone in her camp is reading this.

  36. Navy Nick October 8, 2013

I AGREE WITH ABOVE COMMENT 100%! CZARM is sooooo right! Brandy, your team sucks- PERIOD, YOU HAD THE BEST R&B ALBUM OUT, and it was just thrown to the side…it’s NOT KOOL, because I flew from Hawaii just to see you in LA, I ADORE U BOO! GET A NEW TEAM ASAP!

  37. Brandys Starr October 8, 2013

I am so ready. Two Elevan was such a great album. I just hopes she fulfils this album much more.

  38. MusicLover October 8, 2013

I am not really ready for Brandy next album. I think she should do some acting or something else. Her comeback with the Two/Eleven was ok. I like some of her songs that she had in the past.

  39. KEVIN October 8, 2013

This chick is as ugly as a kick in the balls..damn!

  40. Yeah ok October 8, 2013

Nobody’s checking for this basic no vocal range b**** besides her handful of delusional fans, as is evident with her last THREE FLOP ALBUM’S. She’s DONE.

  41. Loving old school October 8, 2013

Sad to say, but I feel like her day in music has come and gone, her era ended at “Full Moon”.

  42. NOT HERE FOR IT. October 8, 2013

She needs to get some DANCING LESSONS FIRST, UGH SHE LOOKS LIKE SHE’S HAVING SEIZURES UP THERE.

  43. DD October 10, 2013

I love Brandy and a handful of tracks on 2/11, but overall I thought it was too safe (re: generic). I’m not sure who she should work with but I’m not so sure about Timbaland after what he’s put out with Timberlake and I can’t even name the last Jerkins hit. I think she should move a little closer to pop ala Never Say Never or even do more with rock and adding some crunchy/distorted guitars. Her voice is so universal it can pretty much sound good on anything! Either way, I’m excited for the next album!

  44. Brandyfan nr 1 December 22, 2013

Two Eleven is her worst album to date. She needs to stop making all these thug crack head producers dream come true and give her fans what they want. We are the ones supporting her and buying her tickets and albums. STOP PLAYING MOTHER TERESA BRANDY and make a “Full Moon 2”
