Lady GaGa’s ‘Machete Kills’ Role Welcomes Positive Reviews: ‘A Hilarious Touch’

Published: Saturday 12th Oct 2013 by David

One year before she stars in Sin City‘s sequel, ‘A Dame To Kill For‘, Lady GaGa has joined the cast of her new movie ‘Machete Kills‘ in generating positive reviews aplenty upon the flick’s cinematic release!

Why the ‘Starstruck’ singer is being hailed as one of the movie’s brightest stars?

Review roundup below…

There’s no denying the film’s fun spot-the-star cameo challenge: Mel Gibson, Lady Gaga, Sofia Vergara and Michelle Rodriguez must have a fondness for camp and arterial spray, and they infuse Machete with genuine energy.

Lady Gaga, Walton Goggins, Antonio Banderas and Cuba Gooding Jr., all play an assassin named La Camaleón, and their performances are surprisingly consistent.

and a face-shifting assassin called the Chameleon, who’s played at various points by Cuba Gooding Jr., Antonio Banderas and Lady Gaga in an orange wig (she’s not bad, haters).

Lady Gaga (in her first film) shows unsurprising flair as the Chameleon’s sexiest guise

Perhaps Rodriguez’ most interesting development in “Machete Kills” is the role of El Camaleon, played by Cuba Gooding, Jr., Lady Gaga, Walt Goggins and, my personal favorite, Antonio Banderas, who has done six films with Rodriguez. It’s a terrific shtick, especially with Lady Gaga running around in a wolf coat with tangerine hair.

Michelle Rodriguez is back for “taco time” as rebel leader Luz, but she seems tame in comparison to Lady Gaga, who struts sexually as The Chameleon, a villain who can change faces (and genders) at a whim.

And the revolving cast of actors filing extended cameos as the shape-shifting “El Camaleon” is, admittedly, an often hilarious touch.

Michelle Rodriguez and Jessica Alba reprise their roles from the original; Walt Goggins, Cuba Gooding Jr., Antonio Banderas and Lady Gaga all make good with their respective turns as assassins; and “Spy Kids” alumna Alexa Vega finally completes her maturation from child star to ludicrously pneumatic sexpot.

Like a Grindhouse Woody Allen, Rodriguez attracts much talent, albeit off the boil, to his high-turnover cheapies, here once more surrounding Danny Trejo (not actually a terrible actor, but as Machete directed to possess all the charisma of a tree stump) with game-for-a-laugh famous faces in a series of stunt cameos. Which, frankly, are the film’s biggest attraction. Walton Goggins, Cuba Gooding Jr., Antonio Banderas and, yeah, Lady Gaga all appear — playing the same character.

There are tons of other fun parts, with Cuba Gooding Jr, Antonio Banderas, Sofia Vergara, Vanessa Hudgens, Lady Gaga, William Sadler, and more showing up here and there.

The aforementioned President is played by Charlie Sheen – here billed as Carlos Eztevez – and having America’s favourite bad-boy show up as the country’s Commander-in-Chief is stunt casting that shouldn’t work but does, with Sheen playing the part straighter than you’d expect.
Which is not an accusation that can be levelled at Lady Gaga, who looks like she’s just walked off the set of a Russ Meyer movie as a man-eating assassin, with crazy cascading from her every line delivery.

Jessica Alba does an uncredited and brief reprise of her role from the original Machete movie. In the sequel, we also get Michelle Rodriguez (no relation to the filmmakers) returning as Luz, along with the introduction of Demian Bichir, Amber Heard, Alexa Vega, Antonio Banderas, Cuba Gooding Jr., Vanessa Hudgens and even sexy singer Lady Gaga.

Sheen’s role is one of a dozen small parts in Machete Kills that elevate the movie beyond its Z-movie inspirations: Walton Goggins, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Cuba Gooding Jr., and William Sadler show up, get silly (and/or killed), and then depart.
