Watch: Toni Braxton Performs US National Anthem At Breeders Cup 2013

Published: Saturday 9th Nov 2013 by Sam

Iconic diva Toni Braxton took front, stage, centre at the Breeders Cup 2013 recently, performing America’s most iconic song – ‘The Star Spangled Banner’.

The high-profile spot is the latest of many lined up in support of the soulful contralto’s new duet album with Babyface ‘Love, Marriage & Divorce’ – which hits stores on February 4th 2014.

How did she fare? Find out after the jump…

We love us some Toni, but are sure even she’d agree that this wasn’t her best showing. By no means “bad” from a technical standpoint, it was just too controlled and didn’t pack the vocal fireworks required for a song so renown.

Still, we remain uber excited about ‘Love, Marriage & Divorce’. Lead single ‘Hurt You’ has been on constant replay here at TGJ HQ.

Her voice is as beautiful and unique as ever, but the performance was too restrained!! Maybe she was just nervous and didn’t want to accidentally pull a Christina Aguilera.

You can tell she was nervous as hell as she literally like rushed through the song. I kind of feel bad because she started off flat–then she got kind of pitchy when she went to belt. Overall, I love Toni’s voice. She has a silk to her tone.I just think she was probably really unprepared for this performance and obviously nervous as hell.

That’s actually how majority of American people prefer to hear our national anthem sang. Most of them don’t want to hear it sang with arrogance, all-over-the-place vocals, it’s offensive to the meaning of the song. It wasn’t written to be sang with all the theatrics, excessive riffs, runs, and hoopin’ and hollering. It symbolizes how our nation is still standing after all the wars. Not “who can out-sing the other pop girls who’ve performed this song before.” I work at a big stadium and I get to hear the national anthem sang every night and what I gather is that people just want to hear the song sang and over with in a minute & a half. don’t nobody want to hear u screamin, rewriting melodies and all that nonsense. You see how Christina aguilera couldn’t get through the song without f****** it up. Don’t nobody got time for that. So for you “journalists”, this is one you know nothing about. She did a good job, she got through the song. It wasn’t meant for her to do too much.
