Sampling real audio pulled from 1986’s ‘Space Shuttle Challenger’ disaster, Beyonce’s ‘XO’ saw her billed ‘insensitive’ by former astronauts who slammed her use of NASA public affairs officer Steve Nesbitt‘s “Flight controllers here looking very carefully at the situation. Obviously a major malfunction.”
For, it was these words that were uttered by Nesbitt as the world watched wreckage from the shuttle fall to earth, before learning that each and every member of its crew had been killed 73 seconds into its flight.
In response to the criticism, the ‘I Was Here‘ performer explained:
“My heart goes out to the families of those lost in the Challenger disaster. The song ‘XO’ was recorded with the sincerest intention to help heal those who have lost loved ones and to remind us that unexpected things happen, so love and appreciate every minute that you have with those who mean the most to you.
“The songwriters included the audio in tribute to the unselfish work of the Challenger crew with hope that they will never be forgotten.”
