Epic Records are in a celebratory mood.
The L.A Reid helmed label have enjoyed chart success this year with hits from the likes of Fifth Harmony, Meghan Trainor, and A Great Big World – whose ‘Say Something’ featuring Christina Aguilera has sold a whopping four million copies since its release in February.
To round the 2014 on a high, many of the imprint’s banner acts have come together for a new Holiday EP titled ‘I’ll Be Home For Christmas’.
Set for release on November 24th, the project will notably see Fifth Harmony cover a major Mariah Carey classic.

The ‘Bo$$’ belters have been confirmed to cover the iconic ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ as their contribution. More than just a number on the tracklist, the group’s version of the Mimi smash will be officially sent to radio on November 25th.
And while it’s easy to assume Mariah may not approve (given her general shadiness towards new acts and the fact her own version of the track is routinely re-pushed every Xmas), we doubt that’ll be the case. Why? Because, Carey was smart enough to pen the vast majority of her material; as such, she’ll be receiving a cute royalty check whatever happens.
Elsewhere on the EP, Tamar Braxton performs ‘Sleigh Ride’, while Fiona Apple tackles ‘Frosty The Snowman’, and Trainor soars on an original song she penned and produced ‘I’ll Be Home’.
Mariah gets a check each time a song is played. the random gays writing these articles are so shady. Have some RESPECT. She is a LEGEND. Just like PATTI, ARETHA, DIANA ROSS and WHITNEY; show her some respect;

Anyways, LEGENDARY Queen-Riah will be getting a hefty check this Christmas. I herd AIWFCIY on the radio & in 7 different malls in the past week. Playing OVER & OVER & OVER & OVER & OVER again. Let me make something very clear before the haters start commenting. Mariah owns her masters and her songwriting credits. She gained them when she left Sony in 1999-2000. That has been very known throughout Mariahs 24 year career. Therefore Mariah owns the AIWFCIY song. So if fifth harmony’s working on it, Mariah has to give the ok before it becomes public knowledge.

Haters are known to take a simple text out of context and twist it. The media is the biggest haters of them all. I am trying to contradict what they will do by disclosing facts. They will eventually say she doesn’t own her music or that she is trying to appease to the younger artist to expand her youth fan base. LOL Sam it´s not that Mariah Carey was smart enough to write her own material. It´s that the girl is so talented that she wrote her own material! That ridiculous statement can be applied to Beyonce or Rihanna, who don´t write a damn thing but have the nerve to say and pay for writing credits, so that they can earn money once it´s all over commercially for them.
At least, there are still real songwriters like Mariah and people who don´t write but are honest about it like Celine Dion and many more. And then some people ask why music industry is laughable nowadays…

Actually, you are incorrect. As someone with a lengthy knowledge of the music industry, Mariah does NOT in fact own the master recordings to her Sony material. Yes, she wrote her songs, but she does not retain ownership of her masters. In fact, no female artist owns the master recordings to their works except indie artist Ani DiFranco, whom started her own label Righteous Babe Records in the 90s. Please know facts before you speak.
Since Mariah is songwriter on AIWFCIY, she and Afanasieff must give approval to any commercial covers of the song, but your assumption leap that she owns her masters is patently false.

I am very knowledgable of how things work in the music industry. I receive newsletters and information all the time from Island. Mariah Carey write her songs. That is correct. Releasing the music on her terms is the exact same thing as owning her masters because she is making the decision not the label. You can write them all day and if you don’t own them, the label can take them away if you don’t own your masterpiece(masters). THANK YOU
