The next meeting between staff over at ‘Atlantic Records‘ and Nicki Minaj may be an awkward one.
For, in a new interview with the newspaper ‘The Guardian‘, a British female rapper has claimed the label planned to use her as Minaj’s replacement…hoping to blow the ‘Feeling Myself’ rapper “out of the water.”
In an interview with the publication, Lady Leshurr claimed staff at the label (home to Trey Songz & Bruno Mars) offered her a recording contract which she turned down once learning of their plans to pit her against Minaj.
Interesting.
If this was the only reason the deal fell through we’d have to say Lady made a mistake…and a very big one at that.
For, the reason today’s market sees Drake coexist with the likes of Jay Z, J.Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and Lil Wayne is because each of their respective labels push to turn each of them into the best.
The result? Healthy competition that actually works in each of their favours, all parts to a puzzle which paints quite a profitable picture when pieced together.
Unfortunately, since Minaj’s arrival in 2007, many labels have made the mistake of trying to fast track their own versions of her to the top with GaGa worthy budgets and hype machines that amount to nothing once poor first week sales and failed arena tours blow and smash the smoke’n’mirrors away.
What’s left? A barren playing field where Minaj stands as only the female rapper able to command respect for her craft and major numbers for her releases even when she’s not at her best.
With all this in mind, here’s hoping the next few years bring with them a new batch of female rappers who take the develop their craft and build a fan base before getting into bed with labels.

That’s not a reason to turn down a record deal. Anyways, Nicki has truly been untouchable for the past 7-8 years in terms of longevity. I think she would respect any female rapper out there who puts out quality music and has the drive that she has. Love her or hate her, she has built and empire. On top of that, Truffle Butter and Only are huge successes as straight rap songs. Truffle Butter was 13 or 14 on the Hot 100 last week. Impressive as hell and she deserves the props. If it was that easy there would be plenty of girls in the game.
But Truffle Butter and Only received sales from fans of Drake, Weezy and Chris Brown. That wasn’t all Nicki’s doing.

When it comes to art, i don’t think we have to concern ourselves with trying to outdo the next artist. Instead we should focus on being the best version of ourselves, engaging our audiences, and making smart biz decisions. That will take care of the accolades. Outside of organized competitions, competiting can be a distraction and kill creativity.
