Hip-Hop force Kendrick Lamar is set to soar to the top of the Billboard 200 next week with his wildly anticipated sophomore album, ‘To Pimp A Butterfly.’

Originally set for release on March 23rd, the LP – which was preceded by taster cuts ‘i’ and ‘The Blacker The Berry’ – was rolled out in a rush after an alleged error saw the project available to buy before its street date.

Find out how much the album is in-line to sell after the jump…

According to Hits Daily Double, ‘Butterfly’ is on course to open with first week sales of:

300,000-325,000

When paired with streaming (SPS / Sales Plus Streams) the estimate rises to 350k-375k.

The numbers represent a marked increase on the opening sales of K.Dot’s major label debut ‘good kid, M.A.A.D City,’ which topped the Billboard 200 in 2012 after shifting 242,000 units. As at writing, the album has been certified Platinum by the RIAA and has sold over 1.3 million copies in the US alone.

At a time when sales of music are dwindling, Lamar continues to leap to higher heights. More power to him!

    That’s great news for him!

    • maurice March 18, 2015

While y’all below me are being stupid saying “flop,” these numbers are great considering people don’t buy music anymore.
On top of that, hip hop is really winning thanks to J. Cole, Drake, and the O.G’s Eminem, Jay-Z, Wayne, who all have STRONG first-week sales.
      Congrats, Kendrick.

      • Edna March 19, 2015

I noticed that same trend, Maurice!

Hip Hop will remain just as relevant as pop!

  2. Beygency March 18, 2015

Big Flop King Bey Would Never

    • gina March 18, 2015

Never what? Sell an album legitimately without tricks and gimmicks and buying copies herself? Yeah, we know.

      • metzo March 18, 2015

Gimmicks? Tricks? Beyonce? Those don’t even match. Try again

    When will Rihanna?

    • gina March 18, 2015

      When will Ciara?

But you already know the answer to that lol…

      • Jay Jay March 19, 2015

She already sold that with The Evolution (338k) first week.

Now if she can do that again…not sure

Beyonce album sold because she forced people to buy the album by only releasing to iTunes. For this album to had been released digitally one week earlier those are good numbers. Albums don’t see anymore due to the increase in technology and how we get music. So congratulations to Kendrick

    • Slay_Hive March 18, 2015

No one was forced to buy Beyonce’s album. It topped the BB200 for three consecutive weeks and the physical copy was released to stores the following week of Dec.13! She was guaranteed big debut numbers regardless, being that she’s never debuted with anything under 300k.

    • TheElusiveLamb March 18, 2015

Just bc the album was released on iTunes exclusively the first week, doesn’t mean people were forced to buy it. People decided on what they want to buy. You can’t force anyone to buy your music. You sound extremely ignorant.

      • AmbeRussell March 18, 2015

i wouldnt say “FORCE”, BUT the album was being sold as a full album, so no one could buy one or three songs. so she didn’t force, but she made it impossible for people legally obtain digital copies of her music without buying the whole album

    • guess March 18, 2015

She FORCED them. You sound very challenged. I didn’t know people unwillingly spent their money on her album.

    • metzo March 18, 2015

Anything to try to discredit her. You’re dumb asf. Nobody can force nobody to buy shyt

    • AnnaMaeKeatingsNewWig March 19, 2015

What on earth are you on? Are you forgetting that because she made it an iTunes exclusive for the first few days other retailers/competitors (i.e. Amazon, etc) got annoyed, and didn’t sell it – so for her to make 1 million in the first week on literally one platform without a physical CD is astounding. I don’t know how you can force people to buy something they don’t want to listen to… And once it was leaked on the net people could have still got pirated copies, so please explain how she did those numbers?

    • AnnaMaeKeatingsNewWig March 19, 2015

@AmbeRussell, you’re confusing me. A good percentage of clever musicians on iTunes make their tracks ‘Album Only’, so people buy the EP – and since Bey didn’t roll with an official single until after the release, doing that strategy made the most sense.

    • Royalkev March 19, 2015

Forced to buy an album for $16.99???
Who plans on spending $1.29 for a few singles, but scraps that idea just to buy an expensive album???
People forget that ‘4’ was leaked for almost a full MONTH and STILL did over 300K. Forced??? Gimmick???
      I Am … did 482K.
      B’Day did 541K.
You do know that Bey albums come every 2 to 3 years apart, right? With every release your starting from scratch when it comes to gaining popularity from the public again (because the hype from previous eras die down).

  6. Slay_Hive March 18, 2015

Really Good Decent Numbers. I Thought He Would Do A Little More, But Congrats To Him. I Wasn’t Really Feeling King Kunta.

  7. SMH March 18, 2015

And this is just based off one day of digital sales. The physical copies just hit stores today, so expect that number to climb even higher. Kudos to Kendrick and hip hop.

  8. Molly March 18, 2015

    Congrats Kendrick

  9. LB March 18, 2015

King of New York. Kendrick Lamar is one of the best things to happen to Hip Hop music. If only he was as tall as his talent and artistry.

    • FutureCIARA March 18, 2015

But Kendrick is from Compton, California ….. 0_0

I agree with him being King though!

    • Tyler March 19, 2015

      …He’s from California.

  10. TheElusiveLamb March 18, 2015

Amazing numbers. He’ll be gold for sure by the end of the second week for sure.

  11. RealNegro March 18, 2015

Good job for kdot. Especially since his album was free on Spotify.

  12. Rosie March 18, 2015

I can see him hitting 350K-375K+ on sales alone with the physical. Death at Drake stans coming for him on Twitter when Kendrick would’ve easily done at least 500K if he kept waiting until next week.
Also FROOT is doing 40-45K! I’m so proud. Her second week drop will probably be huge though but whatever; easily her most cohesive and most acclaimed album to date.

  13. FutureCIARA March 18, 2015

SLAY KING LAMAR!!!! SLAYING FOR THE WEST COAST RAP SCENE!!!!

  14. Mark111 March 18, 2015

That’s pretty poor with all the hype. J.Cole did these number with no hype at all.

  15. Bitchplease March 18, 2015

I thought he will do more than this though. JCole 😉

    • RedLipstick March 19, 2015

Kendrick’s platinum album and Grammys says hello

  16. Prismatic March 19, 2015

    J. Cole would never. But Congrats K.Dot

  17. SCHEIBE March 19, 2015

WHEN WILL RIHANNA, WHEN WILL LANA, WHEN WILL KATY???

  18. AnnaMaeKeatingsNewWig March 19, 2015

I hate to say it but I really wish more artists would follow in the footsteps of Taylor and boycott spotify.

  19. Royalkev March 19, 2015

Albums are clearly still selling! Congrats to him!
