This week’s From The Vault is salutes living legend Janet Jackson, who not only turned 49 years-young yesterday but also confirmed this year will see her bless us with “new music, new world tour and new movement.”
Today – keeping with tonight’s Billboard Awards spirit – our pick comes in the form of Ms. Jackson’s showing at the ceremony in 2006.
With her then-latest release ’20 Y.O.’ serving as a retrospective celebration of her two decades in the music business, Janet seized the moment to further push that theme. She kicked off her performance with a video montage of some of her most notables videos set to the intro of the Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis produced ‘Control.’ She would then break into fan-favorite ‘Pleasure Principal.’
What followed was a pop-lock themed ‘So Excited’ – which she wrote alongside Jimmy & Terry and ex-boyfriend Jermaine Dupri. The song served as the chart-topping album’s second single.
Though the volume on the vocals were gratingly low, Janet’s overall energy was turned all the way up throughout the performance. Armed with her signature troop of dancers, on that night the artist proved – yet again – that any way you slice it, she never lost that magic that made the charts, MTV and concert-goers fall in love with her all those years ago. What’s more, she proved that, in the midst of the nostalgia, she’s able to serve up something fresh, sassy, and relevant to the time.

Been there done that hun, Janet doesn’t have to worry or prove anything to haters. Her catalog, longtivity, style, dance, videos, influence and achievements have lasted over the taste of time. Classic which I can’t say for others. Quality over quanity. Long as she’s happy no need to worry about numbers, as her presence is a clear indication she’s a legend that is well respected no need to bring anyone of mention for Janet.
Beyoncé barely did anything the weeks after. 1 million 7 days; another million 7 months! That album was all hype because of the way it was released.
I Never understand the logic of some of yall’s comments in regard to Beyonce. The point is for Beyonce to be the only black female artist to go double platinum in years says alot, and I believe before that the album 4 was the closets. I don’t Stan for artist. I Stan for music, but Beyonce deserves every accolade and applaud that she is given. What are you trying to prove?
Janet lawd have mercy????I’m so excited for this new era, I really have a sense of SLAYAGE on the way. First D’Angelo and now JJ !! with her back on the scene, I hope Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliott, Sade, Maxwell, and Mariah come out with some new material for my music collection.
Also can’t forget Toni Braxton and Brandy yes baby I need some quality music from all of them.

This performance is meh. She’s had better. The quality of her music declined after Velvet Rope. Her last three albums are junk. All For You had 2 or 3 cute songs. But I still love Janet
