And The Sales Are In! Meek Mill & Miguel Make Moves With New Albums

Published: Wednesday 8th Jul 2015 by David

Meek Mill’s relationship with the rapper Nicki Minaj seems to have spawned far more than publicity for the pair.

For, after watching Beyonce‘s relationship with Jay Z turn the latter into a household name, Mill has learned his pairing with Minaj has elevated him to enviable new heights.

Why more rappers should consider hooking up with A-listers?

Find out below…

After his debut album ‘Dream and Nightmares’ moved 165,000 units in its opening week Mill’s new LP ‘Dreams Worth More Than Money‘ has shifted 216,173 units this week, placing him atop the Billboard 200 even when streaming points are removed from his chart mix.

His new & improved public image makes him the latest Hip-Hop act to benefit from being linked to an artist with a higher public profile.

For, the rapper Big Sean scored the highest first week sales of his career with ‘Dark Sky Paradise‘ following his coupling with the Pop singer Ariana Grande years after Jay Z found himself exposed to Pop audiences via Top 40 radio when his relationship with Beyonce saw him placed on the lead singles from her first two solo albums.

Alas, not everyone is celebrating this week.

For, Miguel’s critically acclaimed LP ‘Wildheart’ opened with 39,000 units three years after his second studio album ‘Kaleidoscope Dream’ opened with 71,000 units.

If Meek Mill wasn’t dating Nicki he would have sold 50,000 at the most. I can’t knock him for that.

    • Pray for #R8 July 8, 2015

That’s true. I surely don’t care for his music. But Everyone in the industry is where they are because of their affiliation Someone else, so that’s not really fair. Nicki had Wayne. Justin had usher. Kanye had Jay. Gaga had akon. First time I heard of Katy perry was because she was dating Travis from GCH. Everyone had someone… whether it be their producer, manager, whatever.

      • Pray for #R8 July 8, 2015

So yeah, I agree with you.

      • Pray for #R8 July 8, 2015

Help. Well, their names have been tossed around more often due to their relationship. Didn’t Russell say that he and Ciara aren’t having s** because Jesus told him not to? Hmmm….. Interesting.

      • Sherry July 8, 2015

But his last album sold 165k first week. He has a solid fan base here in Philly. Don’t speak on what you don’t know.

    • truth(nicki thew reason A.I. is cancelled and Meek playn ha!!) July 8, 2015

Honey how old r yall THOTS!! He was doin fine b4 nicki. And would have sold just fine without her. Yall some DUMB ASS QUEENS!!

…???…Never mind, I’m willing to meet you where you are.
*Points found in numerical order for easy reading
        1. We knew who Meek was before Nicki.
        2. No one doubted that he could/would sell records without her.
        3. WHAT WE SAID WAS, Meek has surely seen a boost in exposure, thus giving him a boost in sales—the word BOOST meaning (In my own terms, <–which can also be defined as, The Way I Used It)—“an increase in addition to a quantity that has already been understood to have a value”. A BOOST, due to the simple fact that he is associated, I mean, connected with Nicki. #STAYINSCHOOLORYOUWILLSURELYDIE

  2. #TeamTinashe Stan July 8, 2015

Miguel’s album was released before it’s due date so I’ll give him a pass.
As for Meek, I don’t understand the hype for him these days. You can only be loud sounding like a hood rat in a neighborhood argument for a small time. Nicki upgraded him with this marketing relationship strategy.

  3. pu$$iepopstress July 8, 2015

i’m shocked at meek’s good numbers, but i’m also shocked at miguel’s low numbers.

that’s what happens when u take long breaks in today’s day and age. made no sense for him to do that when he wasn’t exactly “on” before he even took the break

  4. Islandboi80 July 8, 2015

Meek Album is amazing and I’m not even a fan but I bought it after I listened in full. Nicki Minaj fan base did give him a little boast though

  5. #TeamTinashe Stan July 8, 2015

Miguel’s album was disappointing for me. Very experimental and I ain’t buying it. However, I’ll be taking another listen.

I’m a fan of Frank Ocean’s music, but this has me in TEARS right now.

  6. Selenator *Good For You* July 8, 2015

Miguel’s album was great, one of the best released this year so far. I think the three year break is what hurt him. Not to mention the lack of promo. As for Meek Mills, no shade to Nicki, but those numbers are better than what she recently did. I don’t think you can contribute all his success to her. But people are definitely listening to him now because of her. Hip-hop albums are very front loaded so I wouldn’t be shocked it if peaks at about 400k.

    • Trillest July 8, 2015

Nicki’s album ‘The Pinkprint’ sold 251,000 copies the first week so it sold more. Let’s see how many albums Selena Gomez sells the first week????☕️

  7. Kelendria July 8, 2015

R&b music isn’t selling like it used to

    • BeyRihLiyah July 8, 2015

Kelly wasnt selling when R&b was mainstream so whats her excuse?

      • Kelendria July 8, 2015

When r&b was mainstream she was in Destiny’s Child so chile boo

      • Jamie July 8, 2015

I mean is Aaliyah still making music? And please clarify Rihanna’s release date. Oh and Bee had to surprise to sell and didn’t even get a Grammy for it so your name combination is dated.

      • Legend B July 8, 2015

Why do people talk out their a***’s??? Queen Bey did win a grammy for BEYONCE. If people wasnt interested in her album, she wouldnt have did big numbers at all. Sit your hating a*** down.

  8. BeyRihLiyah July 8, 2015

Miguel was talking all that shi!t now look at his flop ass 34k

  9. lol July 8, 2015

WTF are y’all talking about? Jay Z been a household name before even hooking up with Beyonce. You almost don’t know this track record. He had number one albums n millions sold before he met Beyonce

    • BeyRihLiyah July 8, 2015

Their talking about mainstream success he didnt have that until he linked up with bey she brought him into the mainstream

    • Pray for #R8 July 8, 2015

Its true and false. On one hand, Jay’s most Classic hip hop records happened before Bey and he was already at the top before Bey released her first solo album. But, at the same time, Bey definitely broadened his audience… I would say more females listen to Jay now than say, in the nineties because of Bey. And I would say that she has helped prolong his relevancy. She compliments him, Yes. But did she “put him on”?? Absolutely not.

      • trose July 8, 2015

        No lies told.

    • OMG Logic!!! July 8, 2015

Jay Z became a household name courtesy of Queen Mariah gracing him with a feature on her #1 track.

Hey, it works for him *check billbored*

  17. B2B July 8, 2015

Meek would’ve done well anyways. I highly doubt the barbs bought his album. Miguel numbers are decent as well considering he has no radio hit this go round, just his name alone.

    • truth(nicki thew reason A.I. is cancelled and Meek playn ha!!) July 8, 2015

Thank you honey. He would have sold ANYway

  18. Rosie July 8, 2015

DEAD at Miguel. Frank will do around 3x more minimum just from his hype alone. Channel Orange is already considered a classic and he hipsters will come through all the way now that Miguel came for him.
Also didn’t Meek Mill sell nearly 170K for his debut? Pretty sure most of the increase came from him being in jail since he actually scanned over 200K.

    • Rihyeezy July 8, 2015

Rosie shut the f*** up. When UltraFLOP going platinum tho?

  19. Mark111 July 8, 2015

“Kelly wasnt selling when R&b was mainstream so whats her excuse?” *Falls out*
For the LAMES, Beyonce brought Jay into the mainstream. Yes he was on that wack 90’s song, but no one was paying attention to him. He really didn’t cross over until BluePrint and that was because of Kanye’s beats. Now, sure he was somewhat crossed over, so was a lot of rappers (Nelly, 50 Cent and so on.) But the Jay we know TODAY is because of Beyonce. Bey was the reason he was ever invited to the Whitehouse, Oprah, red carpets and so on. No one wanted to invite a drugdealler until the pop girl was on his arm. All facts.

  20. Credits July 8, 2015

As of now jazmine Sullivan still stands as the strongest r&b release this year. Sorry Miguel.

    • Mark111 July 8, 2015

  21. Taylor swifts number 1 fan!! July 8, 2015

US album sales: “1989” by @taylorswift13 tops the 5 million mark this week. It’s her 3rd album to reach that plateau.
The album has now sold 7.624million worldwide

    • truth(nicki thew reason A.I. is cancelled and Meek playn ha!!) July 8, 2015

      Kiss my diick biitch!

    • JOHNVIDAL July 8, 2015

And nobody understands why. Basicness in all its glory. Mainstream music has been tragic for at least 15 years now, at least compared to who used to reign years ago.

  22. JOHNVIDAL July 8, 2015

Well, the Miguel numbers are teh normal thing now. Why are some of you surprised? That´s what R&B (and most types of music) is selling now. He has not promoted and has not a hit or semi hit single to support it either.

  23. Legend B July 8, 2015

This want hurt Miguel future sales. Most artists critical acclaim album sells less than the commercial albums. Also, Coffee isnt catching on like his previous hits. Now i do think Nicki is the blame for some of his growing popularity but not all. Meek Mill’s status has being growing and growing in the Rap World. He wouldve been good even without the relationship with Nicki.

  24. cromewars July 9, 2015

Some of u say miguels number slow because of a break. Meeks last album was when he was like 24. He took a big break. He been hustling hard though and he is one of the few prime rappers we got left these days. Listen to dreams and nightmares. Meek really spits.

He’ll probably have a big drop next week though.

  25. RihannaIsMadonna July 9, 2015

I’m so happy for Migay’s flop first week sales after that cocky statement abt Frank Ocean and then that half-baked apology…Kiiii eat humble pie chile

  26. You wanna love it right bettor like you do then my funky money July 9, 2015

Miguel need to do better with his next album
