Miguel has shared his thoughts on Frank Ocean...and they’re set to ruffle the feathers of the latter’s fans.
Why he feels he’s a far better artist than the ‘Swim Good’ lyricist?
He had this to say about Frank in the Sunday Times:
We’re, er, cordial. I wouldn’t say we were friends.
To be completely honest—and no disrespect to anyone—I genuinely believe that I make better music, all the way around.
Frank is the tortured. That’s his thing. That’s not who I am. I may not be dark—as dark—and I may not be as poetic, but I’m living my real shit.
Miguel recently released his latest studio album ‘Wildheart’ and the words above came during an interview with the Times to promote the release.
Ocean is yet to respond.

Hmm I don’t. . . First, I’m not sure what the litmus test would be to compare the two artist. I will say this though; I really enjoyed this most recent Miguel album. I also very much enjoyed “channel orange”. It must be said that both artist are very limited vocally. Still, where those limits (imho) seem to lend a vibe of inauthenticity to Miguels work, with frank it tends to contribute to the art. For me, in listening to this Miguel project, while the instrumentation was top notch, there were many times were I just did not believe his lyrics because of his inability to emote vocally. Not to mention the derivative nature of his work, in general. Can anyone say, Prince (for starters)? With frank, although no art is ever completely original, its much harder to note where he draws inspiration. In my opinion, thats much more valuable and interesting to watch/hear artistically. I’m very curious what Frank will do in his new chapter. I will say that Miguel seems to put more effort into his aesthetic which, I really appreciate.

What I don’t understand is why gay “fans” tend to use homosexuality as pejorative thing. As if being gay should mean anything either way. And it’s obviously always other gay people who say things like that (along with making a point to point out a specific role in said homosexual intimacy). It just doesn’t make sense. There’s a very crabs in a bucket mentality there… If you believe this person is ashamed of his sexuality, why not contribute to a society where such a thing was a non-factor and a mute point of conversation. I like both artist but Miguel told no lies. He is on another level sonically. He’s miles ahead of what Usher, Neyo, Chris Brown, August Alsina, Omarion, Trey Songz, and Robin Thicke have put out this past decade. The only guys who come even close are The Weeknd and Frank Ocean. They’re both great artist who are currently leading R&B.

I actually lean more towards Miguel’s music. This has a lot do with Miguel being the better vocalist, performer and his sound and lyrics are more digestible to me. I personally didn’t feel Frank’s Channel Orange the way I did with Nostalgia Ultra but he is the superior writer. Miguel better expect some serious pushback from the tumblr/hipster crowd as he just came for their darling.
I prefer Frank. I listened to his music waaayy before he “came out.” He makes good music with great production.

My two fav albums of all time are Frank Ocean Channel Orange and Miguel Kaleidoscope dreams but Frank Ocean is a poet, and quiet frankly the best artist are poetic. Its hard to even compare because frank first album brought him past Miguel. Dont get me wrong the second album usually set you up if you going to have longevity in this industry and Miguel did that. To be honest they are both great in their on right. Miguel should try to be the best artist he can be because Frank has only put one album out and Miguel could eat those words later because frank is no amateur.

Go and READ the reviews for Nostalgia Ultra on Metacritic and see all of the year end lists he appeared on for a self-released mixtape on Tumblr, his hype was already there and building. I find it very funny that Miguel is talking about his music but nobody ever mentions his FIRST studio album, how a self-released mixtape on Tumblr get more love than an official studio album? He had Bey, Kanye, Jay, Drake, etc praising him over a mixtape.
I think they have a lot in common aesthetically i.e. neither follows the herd of identikit RnB acts who all work with the same producers. For that reason alone they both get credit.., also, vocally I believe they are fairly comparable in ability. That said, I would say that Frank is more of an artist. He doesn’t seem overly concerned with formula, genre nor the charts etc. and creates varied soundscapes to fit whatever mood he wants to convey. He lives and dies on the actual music. Miguel on the other hand I would say is a more complete package as he can perform, sing live and has a larger persona, whereas Frank is kind of introspective and delivers less of a 360 persona. It really depends what connotation is applied to the word ‘artist’ as I can understand why Miguel would win for the reasons I have above.

They are both great in their own ways. Miguel’s music is a little more simple for the common ear whereas Franks is a little more daring and intricate. NU and CO were both great albums. Kaleidoscope Dreams was pretty good too, but I didn’t find myself indulging as much. They are both great songwriters and arrangers though.
