Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’  allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we press play on ‘Rock With U (Aww Baby),’ a #2 hit for “princess of Hip Hop/R&B” Ashanti, selected to kick off her highly anticipated 2003 album ‘Chapter 2.’  The follow-up to her record-setting, self-titled debut, the expectations were undoubtedly high for the project given its predecessor’s success.

Given ‘Rock’s swift ascension to the #2 spot, fans were confident the tune would notch yet another #1 for the songstress.  But, there was one little problem – and her name was Beyonce

    • maurice July 30, 2015

  2. Keri Qween July 30, 2015

    Chapter 2>>>dangerously in love

    • Jamie July 30, 2015

      The Grammys didn’t think so…

    • BeyKnowlesBest July 30, 2015

It was a good album but dangerously in love is classic

    • BeyKnowlesBest July 30, 2015

But chapter 2 did knock dangerously in love out of the number 1 spot upon its release but overall dangerously in love regained thae number 1 spot and sold far greater numbers and garnered more awards, Asahnti Just couldn’t compete with the queen Beys wrath & her career was never the same again????????????

      • Jamie July 30, 2015

        The s*** died!!!

  3. LB July 30, 2015

I kind of hated that stage of RnB music in 2003, the music got so watered down and generic compared to what was there in the 90s.

It got boring, over-sexualized, made for radio, one two step, noisy crap. That’s what started the wave that killed the genre IMO.

    • Rasta July 30, 2015

I have to disagree. That year is one of my favorite years in music.

  4. BeyRihLiyah July 30, 2015

Crazy in love dominated the airwaves i remember going to the record store with my cousins and buying the dil album we went to 3 different stores because it was sold out

    • Nothing but a p*ssy popper July 30, 2015

It wasn’t sold out, it only reached 4x plat, very low
for all the hype and marketing bayonce pushed.
To think that this is bayonce’s best selling album, the definition of smoke and mirrors.

  5. Centurion July 30, 2015

    The absolute hilarity of Babidi Knowles topping the charts… I’M SCREAMING! ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ????

    • trellbeylike July 30, 2015

Screaming at the fact that she has managed to top the hot 100 9 times and the hot 200 chart 7 times in her career? Im screaming at the fact that the hot 100 is the only chart yo fav can top. Worth 1.29. Meaning her fans and gp dont take her music serious enough to get her those #1 albums. Now thats funny…????????????????????????

      • Centurion July 30, 2015

Yet again I find you in my reply box. Topped the hot 100 9 times and the hot 200 7 times… ❓❓❓ Awww, are we using DC receipts again?

        ???? ???? ????
        |
You’re only proving how unimpressive Beyatch’s sales and chart stats are. And how does the GP not take Rihanna seriously (in your logic of course) when she sells millions of copies WW?
        |
        ???? ???? ????
        |
        Such a kiii. #BeyHiveLogic

      • C.J. July 30, 2015

        @Centurion

But why wouldn’t she count the awards she got while in DC?? She was the lead singer in the group! Awards are awards.

  6. Ozzy July 30, 2015

Did y’all wait the whole year just to bring this up? LMAOO

  7. Lol July 30, 2015

Wow when the top 5 was just urban/hip hop

  8. Legend B July 30, 2015

Hoeianna fans wanna talk about topping the charts, when Hoeianna scoring a top ten is over kii. 3 Flops in a row but you’re suppose to be a singles Queen lmfaoooooo. #StickAForkInHer

  9. 2bad2bme July 30, 2015

Back when black (Good) music dominiated and now white (Bubble Gum Pop) music is trying to take over

    • ronnoc July 31, 2015

OK but 4 artists of today’s top 5 are BLACK, so….

  10. Bitchpleaseeezzzzzz July 30, 2015

But DIL was #1 and Ashanti dethroned her to #2 with Chapter2 though. I love when Ashannti gave Bey a run for her money.lmfao
Overall loved both albums to date 😉

    • BEY>RIH July 30, 2015

It was actually the other way around because Bey debuted solo after Ashanti and before Bey debuted, Ashanti was known as the princess of r&b/pop but Bey took that crown and soon became queen while Ashanti faded and became Rihanna’s and Ciara’s lessor… ????

    • Rasta July 30, 2015

Chapter 2 wasn’t that good. I remember when it came out and so many ppl were disappointed

    • IOWNTHEWORLD July 30, 2015

I guess maybe she DID give Bey a run for her money up until people discovered what a frail instrument Ashanti’s voice really was. Remember she was the one whom people protested against when someone unscrupulously decided that she was worthy of The Aretha Franklin Lady of Soul Award. It may not be considered a major award but, clearly, it was too much too soon and just plain wrong.

  11. fatusankoh July 30, 2015

Omg yes I re Amber it like is today that bey slay I have bein a fan since than and always will be a fan for life

  12. Everyone’s A Critic July 30, 2015

  13. Molly July 30, 2015

Yes Queen Bey slaying that #1 spot… Shout out to Monica and Ashanti slaying too!

Crazy in love is so timeless

  14. Molly July 30, 2015

It’s crazy at one point Ashanti was Queen Beys biggest competition now Beys own competition is herself .

    • Rasta July 30, 2015

They pit everybody against Bey and she come out on top every time. They still doing it today smh

  15. Centurion July 30, 2015

Well those were the days. Beyonce the label puppet absolutely ruined R&B and the mind of young girls with her püsssy popping, wearing skimpy clothing, and her many disgusting whõrě-like behavior, but then again if you suck Jay Z’s chode for a living, you bound to carry on. She’s the voice of this generation filled with hōës and thøţs.

Let’s all say thank you Satan: Thank you Satan. My role model. I wanna be just like her. ???? ???? ????

    • BEY>RIH July 30, 2015

    • RICHIE_RICH July 30, 2015

But don’t you Stan for Rihanna!!!!!!

The lies you tell. 1 question have we every saw Beyoncé naked?

Rihanna on the other hand we have. Hell the broad got naked in bbhmm and it still did nothing for the song. Joke on you doll.

      • RICHIE_RICH July 30, 2015

Are you dumb or just plain stupid.? Where is Beyoncé naked ? Do you know the meaning of naked? Give me proof of Beyoncé being naked. On the other hand their are pics of Rihanna on the net showing her pussycat and small breast. Stop trying so hard dummy!!!!! ????????????????

      • Slay_Hive July 30, 2015

Yaass Richie drag that pea brain biitch!! Yaaaasssss????

    • BEY>RIH July 30, 2015

Im a user here who happens to not dedicate their whole life to a blog… @ISTAN(D)FORTALENT

      • Centurion July 30, 2015

Huh? LMFAO. I don’t. You tried it whoever you are. You aint no commentator. You’re just some weak b*tch afraid to @ me, and the fact that you know my previous username is proof enough. LOL. SssTupid b*tch.
        |
Why did you “reveal” my previous username anyway? Was it suppose to be some kind of drag? ???? ???? ????

      • BEY>RIH July 30, 2015

Im most definitely a commentator b*tch. I have commented in the past but like I said I dont dedicate my life to this site like you @ISTAN(D)FORTALENT. You must be upset because i dragged your p****-patting thot fave. ????

      • Centurion July 30, 2015

You did? LMFAO!!!! Done with this delusional weak b*tch. I’m not replying to these random gravatarless trolls anyone.

  16. BEY>RIH July 30, 2015

I find it funny how the old navy claim Bey went from classy to trashy yet their leader says she has been p**** popping since day 1. The contradiction!! If Bey is a h**, Rih is a wh***.

  17. RICHIE_RICH July 30, 2015

Yess I remember this. Both album were the bomb. Look at the navy trying to deflect. DIL was pure, good RnB. Was just bumping DIL this past weekend lounging around the house.

MOTHA WAS SLAYING DIL ALBUM COVER!!!! She was giving FACE and BODY.

  18. Centurion July 30, 2015

Can you believe that Michelle Obama took her daughters to go to one of these “shows”? She must’ve been so disgusted. I pitied her. This creature is really the satanic w***** of our generation.

  19. Dossome July 30, 2015

Damn,Sean Paul,Chingy,Nelly,Monica,Ashanti,Ginuwine,Lil Kim and 50Cent in the Top 20?Wow,times have really changed….The question is,when did music start getting so bad? This list is pretty good.RnB and Hip-Hop were dominating then

  20. Oscar The Grouch July 30, 2015

back when black artists were dominating the charts with actual good quality music…

  21. Slay_Hive July 30, 2015

I remember this summer. I was going to seventh grade during that summer. I was SO OBSESSED with Crazy in Love and I liked Rock With You, but Bey took over that year. CIL was CRAZY popular and I still have the CD my mom bought for me.???????? Such a good time in music and brings back so many memories!!

  22. RihYonce July 30, 2015

Bey was slaying as soon as she slept on the scene 12 years ago & nothing has changed today besides the fact that now she has no competition

    • KingNavy July 30, 2015

LMAOO no competition when her last #1 song was in 2008? At this point Taylor Swift has even scalped Beyawnce let alone Rihanna.check the list of best selling artists of all time.. Bey nowhere to be found. Y’all hive members do too much without understanding that facts are facts.

  23. RihannaIsMadonna July 30, 2015

#1 on the Hot 100 something Bey will NEVER see again, I can’t at her struggling to crack the Top10 solo this Decade and the decade is almost over #Flop

  24. DOSSOME July 30, 2015

Ginuwine’s In those Jeans was the JAM..i loved that song

  25. Xtina = The voice of this generation July 30, 2015

Queen of R&B. Slay King Yoncé!!!

  26. Yonce on your mouth July 30, 2015

    QueenBey Slaying!

  27. Quinn July 30, 2015

That top 20 slays… Those were the days.

  28. AJAY July 30, 2015

    FACTS HERE

    ASHANTI used to SLAY!!!

Beyoncé had to work overtime …when you think about it…..beyonce had to lay it all out…dancing, s** selling image, everything just to be taken serious…. But Ashanti released one song and her album went #1….RAIN ON ME CLASSIC! DIL was classic too. Overall DIL had more singles and showcased what the album offered. Ashanti came out with “Only U” just (one song again) and SLAYED! The indictment with Murder Inc ruined her career….if they didn’t fall under I wonder where she’d be….peep her feature in at #14 also go ASHANTI

    • RICHIE_RICH July 30, 2015

Hun Beyoncé only released CIL before DIL came out and her album went #1 also. So how did she have to work OT

  29. JOHNVIDAL July 30, 2015

This is not as good as your other retro rewind posts. Music charts and industry were always way worse in the 00s than in the 80s and 90s. It started with the new millenium. You only chose this particular year to have Beyonce in the post.
You can not see the clear difference quality wise between the 2015 chart and the 2003 one, like you could see with charts from the 90s in previous posts.

    • JOHNVIDAL July 30, 2015

And before soebody goes mad, I wasn´t saying this fro Crazy in Love. That´s definitely Beyonce´s best single to this day and it was so faucking good, everybody loved it. A deserving #1. I´m talking about the chart/s in general. The 00s were already so much worse.

  30. DIABETES UNBOTHERED July 30, 2015

Great post. No artist has b been as affected by hurricane bey as did ashanti. Her debut was huge! I love how BIG urban music was tgen. 03-06 was r&b/ hiphop golden years imo. I really came to distinguish the reason why its harder for bey to get a #1 than rihanna. Its because bey set the bar too high for her own good. Rihanna has to compete with weak songs like SOS to get a #1 while bey has to compete with epic hits like cil!

  31. DIABETES UNBOTHERED July 30, 2015

And i could sworn on my life tht MAGIC STICK was 50 cent song. Imo get low defined that era in hip hop. U could not escape lil john back then. Its ashme how music fell off. Bet awards were everything back then too. *sigh* atleast the movie industry is still good.

  32. Lolz July 30, 2015

Aw a dangerously in love. The album that Rihannna cannot outsell with her 26252516 releases.

  33. DIABETES UNBOTHERED July 30, 2015

Ppl are petty lol dil sold 4.9 mill it should be 5x plat. Idk why her label never got it. But noone was more impressive than Usher, he was the MJ of that era. Now we have chris brown with quantity over all else.

  34. Mark111 July 30, 2015

This beginning of the @ss shaking, fake hair whipping and the Camel’s d*** riding. This is the first time seeing Beyonce at #1 in years, lol.

  35. Junior in Jamaica July 30, 2015

The final year of Mya’s commercial success. 🙁 I miss her.

  36. another bty day something ain’t wrong July 31, 2015

Music was good back in 2003 and everybody had loved Beyonce g Knowles Carter and Ashanti s Dougherty back in 2003 music

  37. @JanetCIARA_ July 31, 2015

Damn, Ashanti was literally on that bittches coat tail!

  38. MeIAmMarie July 31, 2015

Wow 2003 was a great year for music most of the songs on there I loved I remember when I bought Bey Dangerously In Love & my ex boyfriend bought me Chapter 2 Crazy In Love was my fave Bey song till she released Drunk In Love Bey Dangerously In Love part 2 please and thanks ????

  39. Caleb August 3, 2015

Wow. Lil’ Kim with an actual song on the Billboard Hot 100 and in the top 10 at that! You KNOW this list is old.
