After pushing TLC & Usher to Pop royal status in the 90s the record executive LA Reid set out to do the same with fresh faces as the head of Def Jam in 2005.
Joining him in his mission was the rapper turned exec Jay-Z who, keen to replicate the solo success of his then-girlfriend Beyonce and a ‘Goodies‘-supplying starlet named Ciara– picked up two new artists named Teairra Mari and Rihanna.
The rest as they say is history.
Now, Reid has revealed that Rihanna may not have been treated as a priority at the label if not for moves Beyonce made to support her behind the scenes.

An excerpt from Reid’s new memoir reveals:
I first laid eyes on Rihanna in the hallway. I didn’t know she was a singer or anything, just a pretty girl standing outside somebody’s office. Then Jay Z burst into my office.
“You have to see this girl,” he said.We went back to his office and he introduced me. She was a startlingly beautiful 17-year-old from Barbados. She opened her audition with a Beyoncé song, singing, but the whole time piercing me with these laser eyes. I saw her determination, her commitment. I saw someone who was going to be a big star someday. My head was spinning. She sang another song, “Pon De Replay,” that would become her first hit. After she was done, I looked at Jay Z.
The funny thing about Rihanna’s success was that we signed two girls at that time — Rihanna and a lovely young lady named Teairra Mari. We had an in-house company showcase and Beyoncé happened to be there with Jay Z. Teairra Mari, Rihanna, a four-girl group called Black Butterfly and Ne-Yo performed. At the label, we thought Teairra Mari would be the big star. We spent more time on her, did more work on her, paid more attention to her. Rihanna already had a hit with “Pon De Replay,” but we still thought it was the other girl. A bell went off for me, however, when, after the showcase, Beyoncé came up to me.
“That Rihanna girl,” she said, “she’s a beast.”
Black Butterfly‘s Amina Schmal would go on to star on VH1’s ‘Love & Hip Hop New York‘ while Mari would go on to make a fool of herself on the platform’s Los Angeles arm.
Rihanna would go on to become the highest-selling female artist on Jay Z‘s roster with the support of her first manager Marc Jordan and hits penned and produced by Ne-Yo, Stargate, J.R Rotem and The Dream.

Interesting times. The way how Jay Z and Def Jam were promoting Teairra as the “Queen” of Roc A Fella and Jay Z even appeared in her first music video to give her that extra stamp that she was gonna be “IT”. Sad thing about it is, at the time Teairra definitely oozed huge potential due to her singing and confidence at such of a young age more than Rihanna. But she just didn’t have the hits to back her up to elevate her artistry. That’s where Rihanna won!

I think the issue is that they went urban with Teairra when urban music was on its way out and with son the replay there was a reggae sound that was big with the likes of Sean Paul so Rihanna scored a cross over hit, has Teairra had more crossover songs she would’ve faired better. I also think that she was too sexual at her age which i found a turn off.
I also remember the rumour that Rihanna was dropped by the time SOS was released and had to finance the video via Reebok and herself and then resigned when the song became a hit so it wasn’t all smooth and Beyonce endorsing

Yeah I remember that time completely. I also thought that Teairra Mari would be the bigger star. Someone said it spot on to Teairra carried herself like a star because she was confident. I also did find it very very odd that they would allow a 17 year old young lady to release music with a parental advisory label on it. I think I had the edited album probably from WalMart. Back then as a kid that was the easiest spot to grab clean CDs from if your parents cared about clean music-my mom did.
And honestly The other odd part is Rihanna had a big first single and a sorta ehhh second single. Teairra had a good urban single that was her lead and then a crossover single as her second because “no daddy,” was actually a TRL hit. The luck and chance did seem to come into play for Rihanna’s second album which def jam released like 6-8 months after her debut and “s.o.s” became a number one hit. Too bad for Christina Milian who didn’t want the song because it was too Pop for her then Urban sound for ‘So Amazin’ album. That was such a blessing for Rihanna tbh.
What I don’t understand is why wasn’t Teairra given a second album. Or why didn’t “Phone Booth” get a music video I think young kids and especially girls would have loved that in a TRL 106 & Park world of music.
Perhaps Teairra’s downfall was the fact she was signed through Def Jam. I mean it was semi creepy a 17 year old was being dubbed as the First Lady of a label full of grown ass men. And by 2005 Roc-A-Fella was basically already dead.
It sucks because Teairra Mari truly was…is…talented but she let herself go. The weight gain. Plastic surgery. I always wanted her to be successful because I believed in her. Her debut album had good music on it like “New S***,” “Get Down tonight,” and more.
