Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.
So, as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.
This week we will show a little love to ‘Because You Loved Me,’ Celine Dion‘s megahit from 1996. Originally pitched to Toni Braxton by songwriting legend Diane Warren, the song would land in the hands of Dion after L.A. Reid decided ‘Unbreak My Heart,’ another tune penned by Warren, was a better fit for the ‘Another Sad Love Song’ singer. The “switcheroo” would prove a lucrative decision as both divas earned career-defining hits out of the deal…
For Celine, this week 20 years ago saw her continue to fend off steep competition from another chart-topping diva, Mariah Carey, whose hit ‘Always Be My Baby’ was making serious advances up charts. Interestingly, it was Carey who Dion had to dethrone to become #1 (see: ‘One Sweet Day’). While the Canadian diva eventually relinquished the position to ‘Baby,’ her six week consecutive run atop the Hot 100 was nothing to shake a stick at.
Walk down memory lane with us below and see where many of your favorite “divas o’ the day” landed on the singles’ chart this week in 1996:

The talent from the 90s is just not the same when you look at todays chart (sigh)
I knew Brandy is some where on the BB in 96?????????
yeah number 198
It clearly says #7
These retro rewinds are bittersweet! Rest in peace to the days when true talent dominated the charts!!!
DAMN!!! Most if not all of those songs could have easily gone to #1! Some many talented and gifted artist on the same chart.
Although I was only 4 i do remember my mom jamming to a lot of these. Music will never be like it was in the 90’s ever again.
Wow! All three of the holy trinity of the greatest voices were in the top 10 at the same time! Celine, Mariah, Whitney! I was 7 years old and remember loving everything on the charts at that time. What a time to be a music lover.
Where’s johnvidal’s old bitter ass?
Music is dead. Everything about it today is a joke. The 90s had R. Kelly and Celine and CDs , the 10s has Bieber and Rihanna and Spotify.
Ummm, no PillowTalk serves!
My God yes just yes!!! Vocals for days everywhere and quality music. Now it is total crap. Almost everything in mainstream is total crap now.
