Alicia Keys last released an album four years. As such, it’s little surprise that she’s taking the “flood” approach to her comeback campaign.
Ebony Magazine is her latest stop and she certainly makes it count.
Continuing her minimalist approach to her aesthetic this era, the ‘In Common’ cooer gets “unfiltered” on the cover – and also within its inner pages.
In her interview feature, the singer – who, after 15 years in the game, has just as many Grammys – waxes honest about her hiatus and new material.
Quotes await below…
On Her Break:
It’s been four years since my last project, and it wasn’t like ‘Oh, I’m just going to chill, then I’mma pop off.’ I’m a touring artist, so after the release of Girl on Fire in 2012, I did the promo and toured around for that album. That was about a two-year process. When I returned from being on the road, I was all fired up. I was excited to be in the studio, and the music was flowing. It was like, Vroom, vroom, bang, bang, bang; like lightning! It felt like the best music I’d ever created. The sound was totally alive and outrageous, then somewhere in the middle of it all, we were like, ‘Uh, oh; we’re pregnant.’ My team and I were just about to put out a record, and everything got put on hold. So yes, life happened, and it’s beautiful. My younger son, Genesis, [now 21 months old] is just the sweetest little chubby butt in the world.
On Her New Album
“[The hiatus is] a blessing because he gave me the opportunity to step back and see things with fresh eyes. Now, I think I’ve created something timeless, music that could come out today or 30 years from now. It will remain powerful.” {Source}
Time will indeed tell if her sentiments about the new music holds true.
For us though, what isn’t debate-able is how immensely talented she is. Hence, we remain buzzed to hear the project.
Alicia girl I love you all but please spare me with this “Make up free movement”. Throw some mascara and blush on your freckled face and drop some new music because “Common” was cute but it’s not cutting long term. Love you Alicia but, you have been frustrating me these past 2 music eras!
Dear Alicia: Your music is not selling because your becoming Strange to the Urban community and preachy. If I aint got you, Diary, Butterflyz, Fallen, Unthinkable and Lessons Learned. That’s your formula, beautifully sung vocals, heartfelt lyrics, piano. Go Back to your Formula and the hits will come. Touch peoples hearts and stop trying to be different girl.
I don’t think Alicia is “trying” to be different. I feel that she genuinely trying new things & exploring, unfortunately her core fans & causal listeners aren’t liking what she is serving up. However taking it back to the “Basics” like her previous hits you mentioned might not hurt at the point!
I love “In common” ready to hear it’s follow up!!
I’m is why everybody is so in love with In Common. It’s by far her worst single to date! What I’ve heard so far isn’t good at all. I love her but im also worried about her!
She´s one of those who is so talented regardless of everything. Very interested in listening to the project as a whole body of work. That´s how I enjoy music anyway (for that real talent has to be involved of course 🙂 🙂 🙂 )
Looking forward to Alicia’s new stuff. I can appreciate that she doesn’t need a million songwriters or fake relationship drama to create good music.
Who is using fake divorce? Last time I checked the person you trying to shade is still married, never filed for divorce, or even spoken about the constant media rumors surrounding her so called “EVER PENDING DIVORCE”! Since you wanna be funny let’s not forget factually speaking Alicia-sleaze is a home wrecker and that’s why her career been in the dump for the past 4 years!
Stop believe everything you read. You dont know what REALLY happened.
Bey stain well said thank you for telling the hater the true
@Sarah
I said what I said now deal with it!
I like Alicia she has her way creating the right formula for her music and is nothing wrong with trying something different I mean if we stay boxed up to the same thing then ur not growing as a artist and then ppl will be like she doing the same thing she done before so either way any artist will have good and not so good compliments u can’t please everybody
Bye Alicia!
Hope she do music that her fans never heard of before something totally different in today music
