Alicia Keys has been making headlines aplenty since embracing a make-up-less look for her return to the spotlight.
The move, which she says is designed to promote self-love, has earned praise from countless corners. However, a select pocket of people have taken to social media to slam the 15-time Grammy winner for her appearance.
Of such episodes, the latest played out at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards which Keys attended rocking the look above.
Fed up with the shade grenades, the singer’s producer husband Swizz Beatz took to Instagram in the early hours of this morning to hit back.

Sadly, the industry has long demanded a specific aesthetic from women; one many have unconsciously bought into to keep up with the status quo.
Hopefully, Alicia’s bold statement goes someway (even if a little) towards creating a more liberal and expressive playing field.

AMEN!!! She is who she is with or without make-up. I’m glad that she had the guts to be HER and not what everyone expects her to continue to be. That may have worked for her in the beginning, but as you grow, you understand that you live in a world WITH people not FOR them. The same thing with Lauryn Hill. It seems that the music means less than the package that it comes in!

The issue here is not that Alica wore no make up. Firstly her hair looked a straight up mess. Then she chose to wear a dress that was more of a disaster than her last albums sales.
There is nothing wrong with a natural look. But there is good natural and bad natural.
Her The Voice promo follows a natural look and she looks great. This however was just a disaster.

Exactly! It’s great to promote self love & natural beauty. However people who love to brag that they don’t wear make up remind me of women who wear natural hair & look down on women who wear wigs & hair extensions. Alicia looked like “The Help” plain and simple.
Girl yes. Alicia gave every bit of “Mammy” realness. Swizz is acting like Alicia is the only one who got clowned for their look at the VMAs. No shade, but no one is checking for Alicia or her “natural movement”.

Honestly, I saw and read no one saying anything against her “no make-up” gimmick, i just saw people saying bad things about that disaster of an outfit. Apart from that she looks great without make-up. Definitely better than most people. Definitely.
What is the big deal if AK chooses to not wear makeup, that’s her prerogative. That’s her choice, we all are given choices in life. We as people should respect their choices regardless. I think AK is beautiful without makeup. She is one of the few women in the entertainment business that have that natural beauty. What I’m trying to understand, what does her outer appearance have to do with her God given Gift of singing?
