Chart Check [Billboard 200]: Frank Ocean Blasts To #1 With ‘Blond’

If sales are anything to judge by fans obviously thought Frank Ocean‘s sophomore album, ‘Blond,’ was worth the wait.

For, as we reported here, the singer/songwriter was set to top the charts with the album moving an impressive 225,000-250,000 units.  However, with the full tracking week behind us, refreshed news indicates the project – released independently as an Apple Music exclusive – exceeded its forecasted figures by a handsome sum.

Billboard reports:

Frank Ocean earns his first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart with the arrival of Blonde. The set, which was released on Aug. 20, bows atop the list with 276,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Aug. 25, according to Nielsen Music.

Blonde logs the third-largest debut of 2016, behind only the arrivals of Drake’sViews and Beyonce’s Lemonade.  Of Blonde’s start of 276,000 units, 232,000 were in traditional album sales, while the rest were SEA (44,000 units).

Only two albums started bigger than Blonde in 2016: Drake’s Views (1.04 million units earned in its debut frame) and Beyonce’s Lemonade (653,000). Blonde also logs the third-biggest sales start — behind, again, just Views (852,000 copies sold in its first week) and Lemonade (485,000).”

Those numbers are good. How can someone like Frank Ocean debut with similar numbers to a global superstar like Rihanna.

    • HailLegendGiselle September 1, 2016

And the reverse is true. How can someone like rihanna debut with same numbers as a talented guy?

      • TikklZ September 1, 2016

haaaaaaaaaaaaaa… where is lemonade? Terrible for a over-hyped artist like beyonce. Really queen of front loaded sales!

      • Jay September 1, 2016

Its funny how these navy stans keep bringin up Bey .. lets keep it real Bey is only outta the top 10 bcuz lemonade is not on any other streaming service but Tidal .. meanwhile shes killin pure sales and if she adds it to the streaming sites .. she would kill Anti-Success and Views! meanwhile Bey still makin more money than both of them lol

    • Kris September 1, 2016

@Jay Exactlu girl! These silly Navy chicks think because Rihanna crushing numbers with streams that she’s outselling Beyonce. No boo! Beyonce is raking in the mad doh. Her album cost double the price of an average album, yet she’s in the top album sellers.

      • Cupid September 2, 2016

The combination of streaming and sales determines the overall demand for an album and the artist. Even with stream I don’t believe Lemonade would come out on top(my opinion). Rihanna garners a lot of streams each week from this album alone. She’s the most stream female artist each year. She has managed to push over 500k in the U.S alone with an album she gave away to 1.4Million people, she’s dominating any other female artist on radio by covering all top formats with hits. That Rihanna Reign won’t let up.

Isn´t it strange that Rihanna didn´t seem to benefit at all from her performances at the VMAs? Any of her singles I mean? Normally that´s all she´s got going on with her.
Beyonce is doing really well sales wise with these last two albums.
    .
And look at billboard, the only chart that matters. You clowns better cling to record breaking low sales iTunes. lol

Anti been in the top 10 for over 30 weeks. It may finally drop out of it next week. I see this week’s new releases falling, minus Frank. Brit, Barb and GFLine will have the top 3, bumping Anti down unless it out does 25.

    • IStan4Rihanna. September 1, 2016

“ANTI” will not fall put of the Top 10 next week. It is expected to peak at #7 this week’s due to the sales/SPS push of the VMA’s.

      .

      SPS

      1. *Florida Georgia Line (BMLG) 147-152k
      2. *Barbra Streisand (Columbia) 130-135k
      3. *Britney Spears (RCA) 114-119k
      4. Frank Ocean (Boys Don’t Cry) 73-78k
      5. Drake (YMCMB/Republic) 71-76k
      6. S****** Squad (WMG) 59-63k
      7. Rihanna (Westbury Road/Roc Nation) 33-37k
      8. *Young Thug (WMG) 33-37k
      9. twenty one pilots (WMG) 29-32k
      10. Beyonce (Columbia) 29-32k

      .

In fact, without this week’s new releases “ANTI” would be #3 (7 months after its release) and “LEMONADE” would be #8.

I think some people forgot America is not the world.
Looking at the billboard numbers is good for state artist.
But for big names like Drake, Rihanna, Beyonce etc for me it’s more what they doing worldwide.
You can slay America but fail in the rest of the world.

  16. Lolz September 2, 2016
