Listen: Tinashe Covers Rihanna’s ‘Sex With Me’

Oftentimes the Pop landscape can be potently political. Indeed, it’s common-practice for acts to avoid collaborations with “rivals” and rarely acknowledge each other’s releases.

Tinashe ditches that “rulebook” with a rousing rendition of Rihanna‘s ‘Sex With Me.’

The newcomer’s cover of the ‘ANTI’ album track arrives ahead of the release of her own sophomore effort ‘Joyride.’

How did she fare with the racy cut? Listen below and let us know…

Granted the original song skews a tad overrated, this was a commendable effort.

More broadly, it’s smart of Tinashe to hop on a track of an act whose audience she can borrow from. Additionally, in saluting Rih, it helps dispel any manufactured rivalry folk may try and cook up later down the line.

That said, we’re more buzzed to hear Tinashe’s own material.

‘Joyride’ is supposedly set for an October release. But given that lead single ‘Superlove’ isn’t catching on as intended, we imagine there may be more waiting yet.

Your thoughts?

Leave it to the original boo.

    • I stan for talent September 2, 2016

It’s still better than anything from ciara the flop

      • #JACKIE September 2, 2016

NOcole SHITzinger stan please get off of my d***. Oh yeah, and change your avi every now and then when you’re trolling b****.

      • Johnny Gill Nicole Scherzinger Brian McKnight September 2, 2016

        @Tacky,

        Nicole stay on your mind!

You call her “NOcole SHITzinger” but the ironic thing is she’s much better than S***-ara.

  2. #TeamTinashe Stan September 2, 2016

I was ready to BASH it! As this song stays on rihpeat from the ANTI album but……….. my girl did a great job!!! Oh my gosh it’s more raunchier.

I guess if you want to feel a certain sexual way listen to the original if you want to listen to this than that is another sexual way on a new level.

Great effort Tee! Puts this on repeat!!
    HASHTAG: #SupportBlackArtists 🙂

    • #TeamTinashe Stan September 2, 2016

And yes Sam it is true! Alot of women in the industry are told or conditioned on not doing any covers or showing support for the other female artist especially in the same genre.
      So this isn’t bad.

  3. Mark111 /.\ September 2, 2016

She’s only on the Rihanna train because she can’t get passed that one hit and Chris Brown dissed the crap out of her. I like her, but I hate fakes.

    • #TeamTinashe Stan September 2, 2016

Uhh….. does that even make sense?
She did a Rihanna cover to only get back at Chris?

Find a new way to hate. The least you could of said is you don’t like it. Geesh lol hehe! smh

      • Mark111 /.\ September 2, 2016

She did a Rihanna cover to only get back at Chris?.
        .
Where did I say that? I know for a fact that she was Team Bezzy, laughed at Rihanna during the 20/20 interview and barley acknowledged Rihanna the past few years. Now she wants to hop on her tracks, say her name in every interview hoping to save her lil career. No thank you, she make great music outside of these try hard singles. I know a fake and this team RiRi is fake.

      • Rihboy September 2, 2016

Don’t forget on the vma pre show she said she was excited to see Rih! Homage was paid but it wasn’t a good cover at All! I’m not going tot lie! I was hoping it would be good!

    • CadeDonovan September 2, 2016

Man, you sound ridiculous and uninformed. You obviously know nothing about that industry and how the actual “business” side works. No one has to publicly acknowledge every artist they are a fan of. Maybe you should actually listen to some of her previous mixtape and let us know the “influences” you hear.

    • Money September 2, 2016

Yeah, I remember her laughing at Rihanna’s DV incident on Twitter. She got dragged for it and said she didn’t like Rihanna. Then she wrote a song for Rih with Calvin Harris and it got rejected. She’s fake.

      • Mark111 /.\ September 2, 2016

That’s all I’m saying. It’s very Ciara with Janet, Nicki with Kim, Doughnut Licker with Mariah, these artist don’t like or respect the winners, they want to BE them, they want their spot and careers. I’m not falling for it. I like her, but with this fake ish she will get dropped from my playlist along with the rest of the flopping lightskin girls.

    • iSpeakTruthNoFallacy September 2, 2016

I’m not going to go so far and say that she’s fake; actually, I believe its the contrary. At that time, and at her young age, she probably wasn’t a big Rihanna fan then; however, both have tremendously grown. That was a time long before Rihanna became the pop force to reckon that she is today. It only takes one song that a person deeply connects with for someone to look at them differently. When I see Tinashe, I see so much of Rihanna’s influence. Rihanna is the undeniable cool chick is trying to incorporate that into her persona.

      • iSpeakTruthNoFallacy September 2, 2016

*Rihanna is the undeniable cool chick and Tinashe is trying to incorporate that into her persona.

    Um…next

  5. Theman September 2, 2016

This was alright. The original is great.

  6. S****** Blonde September 2, 2016

She sounds just like Rihanna in some parts, if you want to cover a song, make it yours.

    • CadeDonovan September 2, 2016

Tinashe and Rihanna have very similar lower registers, as far as their tone.

      • S****** Blonde September 2, 2016

Nah, Rihanna’s tone is unique, not perfect but unique.

  7. Mark111 /.\ September 2, 2016

It really shows how and why Rihanna is that chick. These other girls are trying to sound like her, but fail everytime because Rihanna accent is natural. You can’t fake it and that and her tone is what make these hits.

    • iSpeakTruthNoFallacy September 2, 2016

Miss Riri is THAT chick! NO ONE has anything remotely close to her own original swag that is so infectious. So many people out here trying to copy it which is the main reason why those same people can’t manage to get a hit whatsoever.

  8. Gr8 September 2, 2016

I couldn’t get pass the “tell me if its tight enough for you…” part. Felt like I was listening to a 11 year old singing. She just ain’t that bish. Sorry

  9. FC/JC September 2, 2016

    Yawn……

  10. FC/JC September 2, 2016

Tinashe stans will never get that new album at this rate… nothing is sticking.

  11. Steven September 2, 2016

She sounds horrible, good luck dropping that album…. thus bytch needs to give it up

  12. La Perra September 2, 2016

Barf- this is trash… She shouldn’t of have bothered. This is a mess… *Goes and listens to the original to forget this mess I just heard*

  13. iSpeakTruthNoFallacy September 2, 2016

YESSSS TIN TIN! As I see this song as a Birthday Cake Pt. 2, there’s a s*xual energy that she captures so well with her even more raunchy version. My only critique is that it highlights how soft her voice is compared to the original. Rihanna has this raspy voice that is more powerful with this incomparable swag. Nevertheless, Miss Tunafish did a great job adding her own spin to it which is cool and great promo since it’s what the kids are listening to.

  14. Metzo September 2, 2016

    Way to butcher a song.

  15. Danzou September 2, 2016

Good. I like it. The production is different from the original. It’s darker and grittier.

  16. ÄNNA September 2, 2016

What the actual f*ck is this??
    _____
‘Püssy so good that it’s stupid’

    ‘Deep inside me’

    ‘I ain’t c*** yet’
    ____
It takes a lot to out-trash a Rihanna song, but Tunafishe takes the cake. At least the original didn’t sound so try hard. No wonder this girl can’t get it poppin. ?

    • Blue Ivy Rod September 2, 2016

Those are the actual lyrics? :/

      • ANNA September 2, 2016

Yes they are. I won’t be subjecting my ears to another listen

      • Blue Ivy Rod September 2, 2016

Sigh.. She should have did a cover of Same Ole Mistakes or Needed Me. Those match her sound more

      • ANNA September 2, 2016

Yes, her voice would’ve sounded HOT on Needed Me

    • iSpeakTruthNoFallacy September 2, 2016

Tinashe couldn’t cover Same Ol Mistakes or Needed Me; she doesn’t have the voice. Sure, a lot of y’all make fun of Rihanna for her singing, but more than half than the poptarts out here can’t even remotely do the runs on Needed Me. You have to do it one breath, and considering how Tinashe is out of breath on this…I’ll say a no

      • ANNA September 2, 2016

Thanks for inserting you’re opinion hun, even though it clearly wasn’t warranted!

      • ANNA September 2, 2016

        *your

    • Danzou September 2, 2016

Anna shut up. Was you saying all that when Beyoncé was talking about getting n** on in a limousine? Exactly.

      • ANNA September 2, 2016

@SkidMark you make it so obvious that it’s you. The constant homophobic, racist remarks and Rihanna rants are identical to your main account. Anyways to answer your question, Partition was no where near this explicit (which is saying whole lot!). And at least Bey used metaphors for her younger audience, instead of being outright dirty and trashy like TunaFishay is being.

  17. Rihboy September 2, 2016

I love Tinashe! But this is a no for me! I would have rathered sevyn or kelani too be honest . It’s just ok.

  18. I stan for talent September 2, 2016

It’s good to see an artist covering a song outside of their normal genre, but it’s a no.

  19. Johnny Gill Nicole Scherzinger Brian McKnight September 2, 2016

Well the original was crap so if you had high hopes that’s your fault for being stupid

    • Danzou September 2, 2016

You couldn’t possibly call nobody else taste in music stupid when you Stan nicole.

      • Johnny Gill Nicole Scherzinger Brian McKnight September 2, 2016

Um actually I can because Nicole actually has talent and can sing unlike your fave tinashe and screaming screeching melody.

You’re the one with bad taste, you like fcking tinashe for crying out loud!

You would like a s*** song like this.

Out of all the users here, you have the worst taste. Your fave can’t even hold a note.

        #Nicole stay on your mind

        Nicole >>>> your sh*t fave

Bye little girl and don’t reply again wit yo p**** lips!

    • Rihboy September 3, 2016

Nichole can sing where? How? When? Sway, please stop! ???

      • SailorMoon September 3, 2016

Nah I’mma Rihanna Stan I have to say Nicole Shitslayer is actually a very good singer probably better then most girls out now. Her voice isn’t special or anything but she can sing well enough not to misstep the way Rihanna does pretty often. I love Rih but I cannot lie.

      • Johnny Gill Nicole Scherzinger Brian McKnight September 3, 2016

Well you’re a rihanna fan, so what do you know about singing?

      • Johnny Gill Nicole Scherzinger Brian McKnight September 3, 2016

Also you like tinashe. Again what do you know about singing?

      • Johnny Gill Nicole Scherzinger Brian McKnight September 3, 2016

        “Her voice isn’t special
or anything” and “Nicole” shouldn’t even be in the same sentence unless you’ve only heard a few songs like right there and buttons that don’t really show off her amazing voice!

And I’m interested to know who’s voice you think is special.

Well at least you said she’s better than rihanna but still that’s really not saying much.

Rihanna is miles ahead of tinashe but that doesn’t say much either.

  20. tammy September 2, 2016

    lol wtf was this?

  21. LmfaoHoe September 2, 2016

    ?

  22. Nowqd Reddish tran ivy blobukz Need UK timely Ukuno eremixi September 2, 2016

Alot of people had covers the song right on YouTube or Ig and she did ok job

  23. Julian September 4, 2016

If the song is mediocre, not even one of the most talented young artists out right now can do anything about it.

With that said, I’m really starting to fear for Tinashe’s career. She seems really desperate for a hit at this point (although it’s probably mostly her label) and people aren’t buying into it.
She should just do her thing like she did on her mixtapes and not try so hard to get airplay with watered-down versions of herself. Then I’m sure she will find her audience, because she really is insanely gifted.
But no matter what, I’m #TeamTinashe!!!
