The congenial Katy Perry has stepped out to support the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement before the unveiling of her politically-aware new album.

Black Lives Matter is a unique contribution that goes beyond extrajudicial killings of Black people by police and vigilantes. It goes beyond the narrow nationalism that can be prevalent within some Black communities, which merely call on Black people to love Black, live Black and buy Black, keeping straight cis Black men in the front of the movement while our sisters, queer and trans and disabled folk take up roles in the background or not at all. Black Lives Matter affirms the lives of Black queer and trans folks, disabled folks, Black-undocumented folks, folks with records, women and all Black lives along the gender spectrum. It centers those that have been marginalized within Black liberation movements. It is a tactic to (re)build the Black liberation movement.
After finding that her values mirrored that of the movement’s, the ‘One of the Boys’ hit maker took to social media to reveal that she stands with it and will use her voice to elevate its causes.

Earlier this year, the star, who is a fan of the author Toni Morrison, revealed that her next album would be inspired by the 2016 Presidential Election in which Hillary Clinton (the candidate she supported) was beaten by the divisive Donald J. Trump.

Not really. Smart republicans understand this is a very profitable way to make money. Lots of smart people are making money from it with albums, poetry, etc. all while most blacks just march…..for free. Let’s educate ourselves. The only thing she’s endorsing is her next album.
I hate comments like yours. People said the same thing about formation (Beyoncé is just using it for press). Regardless of the reasons, when a big celebrity endorses something like BLM, it’s still a big deal! I respect Katy for this She’s bringing awareness to the situation!

Hmm. It’ll be interesting to see if her actions match up with those words. As Jessie Williams said, our culture and movements isn’t like a costume you put on and take off when convenient. I hope she’s sincere.
White people are waking up because they know their next in line. But this is how change works, it take a few years before the world wakes up. Now we as Blacks need to make sure that WE benefit from this, because with the civil rights era, a lot of other POC benefited from it than we did if you look into it.
