Chart Check [Hot 100]: Katy Perry, The Weeknd, Bruno Mars, & Rihanna All Hit Top 10

Published: Wednesday 22nd Feb 2017 by Rashad

In addition to earning its highest ratings in years, the 2017 Grammys also helped spur some impressive sales and streaming boosts for its performers – most notably Ed Sheeran, The Weeknd, Katy Perry, and Bruno Mars.

While Sheeran, who was last week’s Hot 100 leader, maintains his hold on the top spot, he’s challenged by Perry whose latest number – ‘Chained to the Rhythm’ – made an impressive #4 debut to the tune of 108,000 downloads and handsome streaming figures.

As far as Mars and Weeknd are concerned, Billboard reports:

Following his Grammys performance of “That’s What I Like,” along with his Prince tribute, Mars blasts 37-7 on the Hot 100, earning his 14th top 10.

Fellow Grammys performer The Weeknd vaults 16-9 on the Hot 100 with “I Feel It Coming,” featuring Daft Punk, after the acts performed the song, as well as prior single “Starboy,” at music’s biggest night. The song is The Weeknd’s sixth Hot 100 top 10 and Daft Punk’s third (and second as featured on a hit by The Weeknd, following the No. 1 “Starboy”).

Tuck in below to see who joined the quartet of hitmakers in this week’s refreshed TGJ Chart Check:

  1. ???????Chile, take this “Itty Bitty Piggy” to the market and make sure you hold her hand while crossing the street!??????? February 22, 2017

And some folks said Ms. Katy was over? Chile, when and where? ? That 10th #1 just might be coming soon. Hopefully, she blocks Taylor from getting it.
Congrats on your fourth top 10 from the Anti era, Queen Rih! ?

    • Chris February 22, 2017

3rd top ten. Kiss it better didn’t get to the top 50

      • B_Roni February 22, 2017

I’m sure he/she meant Anti era meaning songs that debuted when Anti was out. That equals four. Work, needed me, this is what you came for, and love on the brain.

  2. Sean February 22, 2017

    Come thru Brunoooo!

    • JOHNVIDAL February 22, 2017

Bruno is doing very good taking into account this 3rd album is not as appelling to what the masses expected as his first two.

  3. ?Yellow Diamonds? February 22, 2017

Damn rih! No promo or video and slaying, one of the best songs off of anti. Also, come on Katy!

  4. JOHNVIDAL February 22, 2017

Can someone explain to me why songs that sell less are constantly charting higher (same with albums, which is the real shame) that songs that sell more? I only buy albums and I stopped paying attention to how this works when they started ruining it. I only check sales anyway, the only thing that I can take into consideration. That, only after the music itself of course and the joy it brings to me.
I remember Justin´s song for that animated film from last year staying at #1 on itunes for so long but they only gave him one week at #1 on the hot 100. Whether you like that song or not (I couldn´t care less) it is unfair if it was selling so much more than others.

    • Belladonna February 22, 2017

Streaming now counts for as much of a songs charting percentage as downloads does. And streams mean anything from your song being in other people’s videos like Black beetles mannequin challenge to you watching videos on Vevo & Cable channels like MTV hits & MTV James. I watch the charts all the time & from what I can tell is white people have the money to buy songs witch is why Pop songs are doing well on downloading i.e iTunes but People of color Stream more because it makes sense financially so you have a lot of Trap music at the top of Apple Music & in the Top10 on Spotify. And Pop still runs radio but because streams can come form so many things Streaming hits go to the top faster.

      • missmeka1987 February 22, 2017

This does make sense to me now because for the past 3 years it’s like POP slowly stop being so POPular Rap music has become over-saturated Fergie, Gaga, Gwen, Lana, Britney, and Katy 6 years ago singles would have flew to #1 in a matter of minutes..

      • Casual February 23, 2017

Actually, Billboard just did a chart formula adjustment last month increasing streaming and decreasing sales. I haven’t been able to find out the exact percentages, though. I’m guessing 40 (streaming) / 35 (radio) / 25 (sales).

    • King B February 23, 2017

Whenever someone has a hit, it automatically contribute to higher album sales. Hit Songs = Great Single Sales = Great streams = Great album Sales. Country , Rock and Alternative artists will suffer alot from this.

    • JOHNVIDAL February 23, 2017

Thank you to the ones with sane input. I really didn´t know how it worked exactly. Clearly a joke. Too many Rihanna fans mad at me for talking about streaming how it should be talked about .)

  5. Jjfan1814 February 22, 2017

Anti has done amazing things for Rihs career! A year later and still giving longevity after all the handling of the album! The best longevity since LOUD, I think.

  6. Whale February 22, 2017

Lady gaga career is over. In two years she will be performing for drags at horrible gay clubs

    • Whale February 22, 2017

Yeah but for now she will be performing in sold out stadiums

    • iSpeakTruthNoFallacy February 22, 2017

She’s done and been done. Her label keeps buying promotion, like they bought the Superbowl performance, to fool people that she’s still a thing but SHE’S NOT. She murdered pop music, and there will NEVER be any recovering from her downfall. She’ll soon be a judge on some new version of American Idol by fall 2018

  7. Nana February 22, 2017

Yeah this is proof that streaming has taken over.
Didn’t Make me and perfect delusion do the same numbers yet failed to crack the top ten?

  8. iSpeakTruthNoFallacy February 22, 2017

“Musssttt beeeee floooopppp on thee braiiinnn…” Shout-out to Bad & Boujee my favorite anthem thus far this year.

  9. Black power February 22, 2017

Damn Katy is expected to fall to 14 next week and I’m almost positive she will only continue to fall from there.

    • Belladonna February 22, 2017

That would have been the case but her Music Video is blowing up on YouTube & was trending at number1, mostly because her videos are fun & have massive replay value & are just good. And as I said in another comment streams are everything & now the song is back at number5 on iTunes so mix all the streams for Tuesday, Wednesday & Thurday & the downloads from thos days + radio & she will be saved.

  10. ….. February 22, 2017

    .

  11. Black power February 22, 2017

And keep in mind, prior to the Grammy performance Katy was on track to sell only 55k her first week

  12. RihNaj February 22, 2017

Lob has outcharted every flop lemonade single

  13. Chasin Time February 22, 2017

Who keeps streaming Closer tf!? I thought that song was done with

    • Meme February 23, 2017

Screaming. I’m here thinking the same. That song is so last summer.

  14. .:: Centurion ::. February 22, 2017

DEATH @ A Million Discounts tumbling down the charts. I guess the Superbowl didn’t help Lady Discount, even though she announced it 5 months in advanced, back in September, when normally the headlining act is announced in November or December. ?

    • ?Yellow Diamonds? February 22, 2017

      Kiiii! A million discounts

  15. B_Roni February 22, 2017

Justin needs some recognition. I don’t like that song but this man is still in the top 25 on the charts. lol and congrats to rih. I love this woman

  16. Mother February 22, 2017

Push through, Rih! Paying LOTB absolute dust and it creeps into the top 10. How, b****?! Power of a good song!

  17. Skyfall February 22, 2017

The singles chart has NEVER been just pure sales. It’s always been Sales+Radio and recently streaming was added in.

Hell Aaliyah’s song Try Again went #1 on radio AirPlay alone.

Also just because a song is #1 on iTunes doesn’t mean anything and he’s why.

A song can be #1 on iTunes and selling 400k for the week, but if it’s lacking in radio and streams and the #2 song on iTunes is selling 375k and is doing great on radio and stream then the #2 song will be #1 on the official charts.
If the #3 song is selling 370k but is doing better than 1 and 2 in radio and streams then more than likely that song will be #1 on the official charts.

    • Skyfall February 22, 2017

To add to my point, Mariah Carey’s song Loverboy was the best selling single of 2001 but peaked at #2 on billboard. I

  18. Skyfall February 22, 2017

I’m here for Emperor of Pop Bruno Mars and Pop Princess Rihanna.

Congrats to Katy and The Weeknd as well.

Ed Sheerans Ripoff Sia song can go, and TSnake and Zaynex song is trash.

  19. Rihboy February 22, 2017

It’s been a year and love on the brain is in the top 10. All she needs to do is drop the video and do maybe one more Performance at I heart and she is good. Or she can continue to pay it dust. I think that she has a plan up her sleeve.

    • Skyfall February 22, 2017

She can at least make a lyric video. I heard her and Bruno are expected to hit the top 5 next week .

  20. Farah February 22, 2017

    Where is Million reasons ?

  21. Taylor swifts number 1 fan February 22, 2017

The power of taylor swift is helping that song reach number 2

  22. Kimbella February 22, 2017

Flopga is already out of top 10??

  23. HailLegendBeysus February 22, 2017

How is Love on The Brain Charting so High when it’s sales are declining on Itunes ad it’s not even a major streaming force on US Spotify. Is radio really holding her single up that high?

    • iSpeakTruthNoFallacy February 22, 2017

Awwww too bad; it should’ve been All Night

    • JOHNVIDAL February 23, 2017

      Hail
Whatever the case, Rihanna is always lucky enough to stay higher than what she should on these charts thanks to everything but real sales.

  24. Mark111 February 22, 2017

Rihanna has her heel on your faves necks. Expect LOTB to be #1 in two weeks. Y’all better prat she doesn’t drop a video.

  25. JanStan February 22, 2017

Standing for charts is so 2009. They are good to see what people are ‘listening’ to but it’s not really a reflection of whats popular. Million Reasons/Formation aren’t huge hit singles but the tours they supported slayed to ashes THE ENTIRE ERAS of those who are in the top 10. Truth.

  26. JanStan February 22, 2017

Lol at some of you dragging Million Reasons for its chart performance just as Gaga adds a third night at the Forum. Some of y’all are just too damn basic to take seriously.

    • Datredd23 February 22, 2017

Super bowl promo always does this ! Her last tour was not this big !

      • JanStan February 22, 2017

Right…. and just anyone is allowed to perform at the Super Bowl…..

    • JOHNVIDAL February 23, 2017

      JanStan
Pretty much. More importantly, it seems like talent doesn´t even matter for them at all.

  27. Ace February 23, 2017

Rihanna shoulda won grammies they screwed her this yr.killed all beyonce singles
