Retro Rewind: Billboard Hot 100 This Week in 2002 #TBT

Published: Thursday 9th Mar 2017 by Rashad

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature “Chart Rewind” – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

Next, it’s all about ‘What About Us’ – the lead single from R&B veteran Brandy‘s 3rd album ‘Full Moon.’  Written by Lashawn Daniels, Rodney Jerkins, and Brandy, the 2002-released bop – produced by Jerkins – was a surprising foray into alternative R&B by Bran (who up to that point was better known for her more standard R&B leaning numbers).  Released at the top of the year, ‘What’ – with the assistance of a kickass futuristic Dave Meyers music video – eventually moseyed its way up to the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 where it peaked at #7 this week 15 years ago.

Tuck in below to relive her last top 10 hit on the pop chart and see who joined her in the top 25 this week in 2002:

Such a dramatic shift. In music over the years. I love every song on that 2002 list. I love the Full Moon album too

  2. Cough Cough March 9, 2017

The beginning of the Fullmoon era. Full moon is one of the greatest r&b albums of all time.its literally ushered in a vocal template that sooooooo many have tried to either replicate or have been influenced by to this day. Start to finish MAGNIFICENT album

    • Lake Erie March 9, 2017

      This is VERY true!

    • Lake Erie March 9, 2017

Funny part is, even SHE tried to do it again with 211…. 211 was very good in my opinion but FULL MOON smh….. epic album.

    • Kevin March 9, 2017

SOOO TRUE!!! FULL MOON IS A CLASSIC

  3. Ashanti Number 1 Fan March 9, 2017

Where Ashanti was on the chart? ???

    • Meteorite March 9, 2017

      At number 20

    • Max March 9, 2017

She was also at number one ?

    • Credits March 9, 2017

She’s at 2,12, and 20. And I’m pretty sure she had a hand in writing j.lo’s number 1 song, “ain’t it funny”

      • Max March 9, 2017

There are rumors that her voice was used instead of JLO’s

      • Meteorite March 9, 2017

Oh I thought they just meant as a solo act, my bad. But yes Ashanti is at 1,2, 12 and 20. (She’s at number 1 because she was originally supposed to sing the Aint It Funny remix, but Tommy wanted to take another jab at Mariah and put JLO on the track with the sample that Mariah was originally going to use for Loverboy.)

  4. S****** Blonde March 9, 2017

I don’t get the hype around her. She’s so uninteresting as an artist.

    • Cara March 9, 2017

Yet you’ve probably never listened to anything of hers outside of her singles.

    • Cough Cough March 9, 2017

Because you’re clearly not musical. The influence she has over a big chunk of the industry is always just a click away to verify.. it really is

    • sam is TRASH March 9, 2017

of course you don’t get the “hype”. SHE’S BLACK AND YOU ARE RACISTS

    • Mix it up March 9, 2017

@ S******, I agree. She’s a boring artist, and that voice of hers is irritating as hell. I heard she smokes like a chimney, that would explain that awful voice of hers.

    • B**** pleeeaaasseeeee March 9, 2017

I’ve loved all your comments on here but bish please don’t come for my queen or we’ll fall out for good sweeetie ????

    • gina March 9, 2017

      agree, brandy is boring af.

  5. DanYiel Iman March 9, 2017

I’m a fan of Brandy’s sounds in general haven’t heard anything by her that’s shifty….?❤️

    • Lake Erie March 9, 2017

      Never!

  6. PeaceMaker March 9, 2017

Sadly this was also her last top 10 hit. she’s been flopping non-stop eversince.

    • Kim Kesha & Pam March 9, 2017

      Meanwhile, Monica has had #1 & #2 chart placements afterwards. & a #1 album. Ki…

      • Gladys Knight Stan March 9, 2017

Who cares? Her sales are nothing to write home about and she has made no real impact. She’s better than nonsinging Total though????

      • Queen of Sheeba March 9, 2017

Yet Monica is ranked #23 on Billboards top 50 R&B artist of the last 25 yrs, while Brandy is at # 45.

And at KKP, Monica has had 2 #1’s and other top 5 as well.

      • Gladys Knight Stan March 9, 2017

And? She’s still had no real impact. No one cites her as an influence. She can have 1 billion #1’s on the R&B charts and the fact remains. Cute kids though.

      • Queen of Sheeba March 9, 2017

Yet Brandy’s so called impact ended in 2002 lol, and being cited doesn’t mean s***, when you have been a foregone conclusion for the last15 yrs lol. Monica on the other hand, has kept it going, and has cemented her legacy with multiple records set.

      • SMH March 9, 2017

Oh please, Brandy hasn’t made any real impact any stronger than Monica’s so Brandy fans need to stop.

  7. Mark111 /.\ March 9, 2017

I feel this album should have been a 2001 release. By this time in music, R&B was fused with hip hop samples(J.lo, Ashunti). I say 2001 or even 2000 or 1999 because this album was very New Millennium, everyone was trying a new forward sound around those times (well, most artist). The album has some good songs, but I didn’t catch on until last year.

    • Cara March 9, 2017

I didn’t really listen to Brandys music until she released 211. That’s when I started listening to her discography and felll in love with her sounds. Too bad most of her later stuff flopped because it was really good.

      • Ciah’s Turtle March 9, 2017

this is me all day. 211 really grabbed my attention to where I had to go back and dive into her discography and I was amazed and what I didn’t recognize back then smh

  8. Cara March 9, 2017

I Love love love love love this song and the Full Moon album. It started a whole new R&B sound that’s still around today. Early 2000s R&B was everything.❤️

  9. Casual March 9, 2017

Radio sucked this week in 2002.

  10. IKNOWTHETRUTH March 9, 2017

THE CHAINSMOKERS HAVE THREE TOP TENS JUST LIKE ASHANTI HAD FOUR TOP 20 PLACEMENTS IN 2002. THAT GIRL WAS ON TOP!

  11. Lake Erie March 9, 2017

Just good ole R&B!!! UGH!!!!! smh love it. TBH, I personally think finding R&B now is like finding a needle in a haystack. It’s SO traversal now to the extremes! .. I mean that could be good, I love it either way because I know the root of it. But IDK, sometimes I just feel like I can’t get my FIX lol unless I play some throwbacks and IDK if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

    .
But more on topic: I LOVE YOU BRANDY!!!!!!!! COME through with that album ASAP!!!! I feel like this album is about to be REALLY outside of her box (whenever it comes) but, I’m ready either way. She never disappoints me.

    • Lake Erie March 9, 2017

      *transversal*

  12. FAB March 9, 2017

Is this the 90’s flop that killed that lady? Or is this that girl who was singing and getting ignored on the 7 train in NYC?

  13. B**** pleeeaaasseeeee March 9, 2017

Damn I swear this blog is made up of Brandy haters but y’all will deal though cuz she still got her millions and her impact will never be forgotten on this biz so stay pressed for life ?????????????

    • gina March 9, 2017

      lmao what impact?

    • Lake Erie March 9, 2017

      So many haters smh…

  14. Mimi March 9, 2017

    Who?

  15. MUSICHEAD March 9, 2017

Always On Time was meant for Brandy instead of Ashanti but she turned it down. Big mistake. But Full Moon was such an amazing album and showcased her vocals in entirety. The album was already Platinum before it shipped due to high demand. Had she been able to promote it properly, it would have outsold Never Say Never.

    • Lake Erie March 9, 2017

Wow! ! #FunFact? I didn’t know that about the Ashanti joint! Interesting.

      • MUSICHEAD March 9, 2017

Yea Ashanti has talked about it in a few interviews. Atlantic didn’t think it would be a good look for her. Ashanti was in the studio one day and jumped on it

  16. ASHY March 9, 2017

I remember thinking “What About Us?” was a flop, I didn’t know it peaked at #7, good for her. Full Moon, could have been as multi-platinum as Never Say Never, but her promo game sucked, and the fact that she only released two singles and didn’t tour. She also got pregnant with Syrai at the time, so that’s understandable, but this was a truly fantastic album.. plays, “I thought.”

    • Lake Erie March 9, 2017

YUP! My girl was PREGO!! And yes, “I thought” is one of my favorites!

  17. Epicenter March 9, 2017

Serious question. Is Brandy embarrassed of her daughter? I get the feeling she’s embarrassed of her because she’s overweight. I mean if that’s the case, get her up to healthy eating smh. I just hate when parents let there kids get that way.

    • Lake Erie March 9, 2017

TF you talking about?! She NEVER gave that impression she’s embarrassed. YOU obviously DO. Brandy posts pictures of her daughter all the time on her IG. She even @’s her on there too because he daughter has one too..! She even gave us a snippet of her daughter singing. You sound so stupid. Brandy been in the biz long enough to have tough skin… Sh!t, they talked about HER as a kid of her features. What makes you think she would deny her child IF THAT was an issue. It’s evident you have no clue of WHAT and WHO Brandy is.

    • HWON March 9, 2017

I get that as well. Plus she always turns off the comment section when there’s a pic of her daughter.

      • Lake Erie March 9, 2017

She turns off the comment section for A LOT of her pictures so that still does not justify yals opinion.

  18. SMH March 9, 2017

Still haven’t found any evidence of this so-called ‘vocal bible’. Brandy’s voice has always been basic at best.

    • Lake Erie March 9, 2017

      Well when you’re tone deaf, it’s clear you’re limited. So I totally understand your disability……. ….. meh. . ….

  19. MEERE March 9, 2017

WHY DOES EVERY BRANDY POST HAVE MONICAS NAME TOSSED AROUND AND VICE VERSA. ITS 2017 WHY ARE THEIR FANS STILL BEEFING? BOTH LADIES ARE GREAT TALENTS WHO LEFT THEIR MARKS IN THE R&B AND POP WORLDS ALIKE. STAN WARS HAVE RUINED THE INDUSTRY. ITS NO LONGER ABOUT TALENT BUT SALES. GET A LIFE!!!!

  20. Music and Blunts March 9, 2017

I always thought what about us was a knock off try again production wise

    • Cough Cough March 9, 2017

Well you’re a drug head of course delusion is your usual. Nothing even close.

  21. Brandy keeps some TGJ posters mad which is why they down vote any positive comment about her March 9, 2017

Brandy still keeps monicas fans pressed…how bout dat for lasting impact?

  22. Case March 10, 2017

    I don’t know her, sorry.

  23. Brandyfan March 10, 2017

But her last top 10 was actually ‘Full Moon’ the second single right?

  24. ItsWNow at youfr best game way tuesidnz March 11, 2017
