Chart Check [Billboard 200]: Kendrick Lamar Makes History As ‘Damn’ Returns To #1

Published: Saturday 19th Aug 2017 by Rashad

For what it’s worth, King K reigns again.

Clocking its fourth non-consecutive week atop the Billboard 200, Kendrick Lamar‘s fourth studio album – ‘Damn’ – has competition saying just that as it beat out country superstar, Brett Eldredge, for the top spot. The project, a mainstay in the tally’s top 10 since its March 2017 release, added an another 11,000 units (47,000 SPS) to its overall tally just three weeks after being certified double platinum by the RIAA.

While his recapture of the chart’s throne is undoubtedly a win, the troubling figure he accomplished the feat with landed him in history books.  Why?  Because, it’s the lowest weekly total for any artist’s number 1 album  (second overall) since the chart began ranking by consumption units.

Billboard reports:

Notably, DAMN.’s sum at No. 1 — a little under 47,000 units — is the second lowest weekly total for a No. 1 album since the chart began ranking by consumption units in late 2014. The only time the No. 1 album clocked a smaller total was on the Aug. 22, 2015-dated list, when the ‘Descendants soundtrack bowed at No. 1 with 42,000 units.
