Major! Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ Re-Peaks / Hits US Top 10 For First Time In 23 Year History

Published: Monday 18th Dec 2017 by Sam

While streaming has proven the curtain call for many a legend’s present day relevance, the narrative couldn’t be anymore different for Mariah Carey.

For, the diva’s holiday classic ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ has (on the back of streaming) achieved a feat few thought possible.

It has re-peaked on the Billboard Hot 100. And in a major way.

Full story below…

After matching its previous high of #11 last week, this week the track powers up to #9 – its highest ever placing on the coveted count.

The unprecedented move was made possible thanks to the following during this tracking week: 19,000 US downloads, a Stateside radio audience of 34 million, and perhaps most crucial 25.2 million domestic streams.

In climbing as it has, ‘Christmas’ becomes Mimi’s 28th top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 – her last being 2009’s ‘Obsessed’ (which peaked at #7).

The songbird ties Stevie Wonder as the artist with the 5th most top 10s on the Hot 100 (since its 1958 creation).

Here’s how that rank looks like now:

Madonna – 38
The Beatles – 34
Rihanna – 31
Michael Jackson – 29
Mariah Carey – 28
Stevie Wonder – 28
Janet Jackson – 27
Elton John – 27

**********

Huge congrats to Mimi!

After a challenging start to the year, she’s ending on a high. Slaying with all things Christmas related and earning a Golden Globes nomination.

Fingers crossed that the slayage spills into the 2018!

That song is a modern classic. And she actually co-wrote/co-produced it. No other Diva has that to their credit.

    • Mad-on-her December 18, 2017

Madonna has written and coproduced several modern classics. Not to discount Mariah, just saying.

      • Stephy December 18, 2017

What modern classic has she composed like All I Want For Christmas Is You?

      • Fancy BISH December 18, 2017

Holiday is a modern classic but Madonna didn’t write it tho

      • Mad-on-her December 18, 2017

Like a Prayer, Vogue, Ray of Light, Into the Groove, Express Yourself…

      • Stephy December 18, 2017

Meh… Those songs are classic pop songs but not giant modern classics like All I Want For Christmas Is You, I Will Always Love You or My Heart Will Go On. Those songs are monster classics, that has been covered so many times by multiple artists around the world. And not to mention has surpassed 15 million in single sales. Vogue is a modern classic tho. And I’ll say Like A Prayer but the rest are just regular classic pop songs but not modern classics… Mariah’s Christmas song is on the verge of becoming a new “White Christmas” holiday modern classic standard. I mean, it gets bigger and bigger every year. Mariah’s regular classic pop songs are Hero, Vision Of Love, Fantasy, We Belong Together etc..etc… But that Christmas song is a modern classic of a different level. Only other female songs that achieved this level of success and historic level of timelessness are Celine and Whitney.

Wow Stephy I totally agree on this one. In fact I gave those 3 songs as examples in my comment (I left it before reading yours). I also agree Madonna´s biggest songs by far at this point are Like a Prayer (I´d say it is her biggest at least in Europe) and Vogue.

    Go Mariah!

But Wait I thought getting a top ten was supposedly so easy nowadays and yet the only current artist I see on that list is Rihanna….

    • JOHNVIDAL December 19, 2017

If u are a current pop star and your only purpose is to get as many hit singles in singles charts as possible then it is not as difficult or impacting as it once was. If Rihanna´s album sales were remarkable then her “achievement” would mean something. She obviously is out of place on that list. Others her age decided they also wanted to grow and change direction and do real albums/eras. Not just let your team of producers do an album every year for you with the right singles.

      • Bam December 19, 2017

Lol stay mad baby. Love how you think you are some sort of authority on music, hits, and artistry.

Like I said “if anyone can get a top 10 why is riri the only current artist on the list”?

      • JOHNVIDAL December 20, 2017

Again, because she is the only one who has tried it at the expense of not growing musically. Well, musically she´s nothing anyway since she does zero when it comes to her music.

Absolutely memorable thing we are witnessing with All i want for Xmas is You. Unheard of. Normally even the biggest classics end losing some steam after a couple of decades. At least commercially. But this song is not going anywhere and it´s been more than 20 years already. It´s crazy. And deserved. It´s HER song. It´s universal. It´s epic vocals. It´s written by her and only other co-writer… and so on.
Whitney has IWALY, Celine has My heart will go On and Mariah has AIWFCIY. Just just those songs they have secured a place forever. This time the tired sentence I´m going to write is appropiate: When will your basic faves? LOL

The nightmare will be over next week…
