Retro Rewind: Billboard Hot 100 This Week in 2001 #FBF

Madonna's 'Don't Tell Me' Becomes Her Second Top 5 Single of the 2000s
Published: Friday 2nd Feb 2018 by Rashad

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’  allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we’re here to tell you about ‘Don’t Tell Me’ – the second single from Queen of Pop Madonna‘s 5th #1 album, ‘Music’ (2000).  The follow-up to the project’s chart-topping title track, ‘Tell Me’ took the era’s “cowgirl-inspired reincarnation” its most literal space.  Sonically, the song intertwined elements of country, pop, and electronica while its visual accompaniment saw the songstress don a cowboy hat, chaps, and get down with some honky tonk two-stepping.  Easily cementing itself in the list of one of the diva’s more memorable music videos (not an easy feat for someone with a collection of visuals as revered as Madge’s), the tune – with the help of its accompanying clip – was certified Gold and eventually moseyed all the way up to the #4 spot on the Hot 100.

Found there this week in 2001, tuck in below to relive ‘Don’t Tell Me’ and see who joined her in the top 25 this week 17 years ago:

      Elvis and Michael Jackson disagrees.

Tell Me is an amazing song and Madonna is the most iconic bitsh out there!

One of her best singles, she has so many quality singles, from Frozen, The Power of Good-Bye, Secret to Drowned World, her versatility is unique, the Music album was great, Gone is my favorite from the album. Btw, look at the diversity on that chart, I still love “Again” by Lenny Kravitz, a classic ❤️

Her best albums are: Ray Of Light, Bedtime Stories, Erotica, Like a Prayer, Music, Confessions & Debut imo.

Her best albums are Ray of Light, American Life, Bedtime Stories, Erotica, Like a Prayer, Confessions and Music IMO, her debut is underrated, it’s actually better than Like a Virgin and True Blue, I think I’m Breathless is one of her best works but doesn’t get the shine it deserves because it’s not an studio album, my personal favorite is Ray of Light, that album is timeless.

@s****** I will always consider “I’m breathless” a studio album. Most of those songs didn’t even appear in the D*** Tracey film and there’s already a soundtrack album for the film. Every song on the album is by Madonna even if she is in character. It even contains her iconic hit “Vogue”.

what a difference in the quality of music now… seeing what was charted then to now is so bad.

The brilliance of Madonna! She put herself in the very FRONT and CENTER of the male brute cowboy image! But it was done in a way to not only look natural, but FEEL natural…like a photo come to life, but not only that…they made it look like she BELONGED there! I can’t fully describe what they pulled off here! One of the sexxxiest music videos I’ve ever seen in my life! Just brilliance on so many levels…that dance choreography is simply stunning…the colors, the lushness….the ending?!!! Justinesha could NEVER lol

White pop stars swear they’re deep and risky when they do urban or country sounds. Fake, fake, fake. But Madonna did it right tho because I remember this song being played all the time.

“Tell me love isn’t true its just
Its just something that we do.
Tell me everything I’m not but
Please don’t tell me to stop.”

I was 10 years old! There is only one Queen! “Music” the album was released just 2 years after Ray of Light. She recorded this album with a French producer Mirwais
Ahmadzaï who didn’t speak a lick of English, the guy’s manager literally had to translate in-studio. Just incredible! It sold 11 MILLION copies! “Drowned World Tour” grossed $75 MILLION! The album was seamless dance-electronica/country waaaay before we knew who Gaga was, my favourite tracks on the cd were/are: ‘music’, ‘Paradise (Not for me)'(she did a SICK stripped down Live version in London for her Confessions Tour check it out on YouTube, ‘What it feels like for a girl’, ‘Nobody’s perfect’***, ‘Gone’ and this one! A gem of an album.

WOW. WOW. The difference is quality of music in the 2001 Top 20 vs the current one. The best years of Pop music are gone and I want to cry. Music has gone to the dogs I tell you. Look at the eclectic mix of genres as well: Shaggy, JOE, JLO, Jay-Z, CREED “Arms wide open”<<<I LOVE THIS SONG OMG!!!! Mya, N'sync, O-Town, Britney's "Stronger", Faith hill's "The way you love me" and on and on… WOW WOW. How quickly 17 years can just go right by you and them BOOM music has become s***. THANK GOD for YouTube I'm going to respin the entire top 20 from 2001. DC's Independent Women as well ahhhggg man. Let me stop. Moral of the story: No matter what they say about Madonna, SHE MATTERS!!! Her ALBUMS/discography speak for themselves! LONG LIVE THE Queen from Michigan!
