Factually, Drake‘s ‘Scorpion’ is on-course to debut with the year’s highest first week sales.
However, it now seems the set may not be packing as much of a sting as perhaps thought.
Details below…
Initially, it was reported that Drizzy was eyeing a sales-plus-streaming opening in the ballpark of 870,000-920,000 (with pure sales to the tune of 275,000-300,000).
However, it seems early momentum isn’t holding up. Because Hits Daily Double have revised Aubrey’s forecast DOWN.
Here’s what the set is tracking towards now:
725,000-775,000
[Sales Plus Streams]
********
150,000-160,000
[Pure Sales]
**********
The SPS figure is still gargantuan given what most are doing these days, but the dip (from the first set of digits) is undeniable. Especially those pure sales. 150k for today’s top selling act?! Eww.
Sure, streaming has changed the game and Drake won’t be losing any sleep, but this really ought to serve as a challenge to artists and labels to find a more compelling proposition when it comes to physical/downloadable music.
Bonus tracks, limited formats like vinyl, special editions only sold at tour venues, something,… anything. Because, if not, there’s next to no point to the physical format at this point.
