As the age old adage goes, “anything can happen” and for Mariah Carey it’s ringing all sorts of true.
The diva supreme may be gearing up for the release of her new album ‘Caution,’ but it’s her most polarizing project ‘Glitter’ that is glowing on the charts.
Details below…
[UPDATED]
The 2001 set, which served as the soundtrack of the movie of the same name, was panned in earnest and ultimately led to the voiding of Carey’s mega-millions contract with then-label Virgin. Its arrival also arrived in tandem with the songbird’s infamous breakdown.
However, in the years that have passed, the album and movie have taken on a cult-like status.
Now, in a unique development, the set has shot into the top 10 of iTunes US. As at writing, it’s currently #8. [UPDATE: It’s risen to #3]
Remarking on the sudden surge, Mimi tweeted:
We’d rather rejoice than ask questions, because ‘Glitter’ (the album) was the definition of underrated. Case in point…
All that’s needed now is for a streaming release. Make it happen!
I actually purchased this album & “never to far away” is still my JAM!!?
mine too!! the album was really good.
LEAD THE WAY is the vocal masterpiece. Sang bishhhhhhhhhhhhh
I wonder what caused the sudden resurgence of the album?? Either way, I’m here for it!
One of her best albums and at the 3 million sold “flop” it was, its outselling most of the top albums today. #NowPlaying ; I Didn’t Mean To Turn You On
When Mariah is rehearsed she is very capable. Why are you always in every MC thread with all of these paragraphs. She’s been sounding great recently.
This is her last era where she was incredibly strong live. charmbracelet was a good live era too but not like this one (“joy to the world” live @ BET Christmas special, anyone?)
Grammys Fly like a bird… TEOM to me is her best complete album and era.
“Fly like a bird” at the Grammys was lipped and the parts that weren’t she was out of breathe. “Fly Like a Bird” is a beautiful, beautiful song with a great message and wonderful STUDIO vocal. But the “Emancipation” live era was not that good, it was very scratchy and she was vocally tired. I attended the “adventures of meme” tour and in comparison to the “charmbracelet” tour which I also attended, her voice was totally different
Lol actually most parts in fly like a bird was live, especially the moments that counts, and she has performed the song plenty of times live. Who cares really.
But it is one of my fav eras visually and studio vocalwise FOR SURE
@mariahsHoney: not even you believe that but ok, whatever you choose to say is your right. We all know the truth. Emancipation was a great studio vocal time for her- no more no less.
FLY LIKE A BIRD is her VOCAL moment
@elusiveOne says nobody ever. That performance was lipped and out of breathe/scratchy when not lipped. It’s a vocal moment in the studio though for sure. But any real Mariah fan knows she’s not capable of that live and hasn’t been for a VERY along time
Such an underrated, concept album. Truly ahead of its time.
True indeed lamb
This album was highly slept on! I’m glad to see it get some love!!! Finally!!!

Please stop plugging yourself here. No one wants to listen to your music.
I listened, the music was actually cute. Speak solely for yourself.
Very Good EP too. Give this guy an interview
Wish it was on Apple Music.
I love it #justiceforglitter
This would be great if itunes positions meant something. Tons of albums “rocket” into itunes top 10 yet never make an impact on the Billboard 200. Remember a few months ago Lil Kim’s Hardcore album shot into the top 10 on itunes but never made it to the Billboard 200.
It’s already sold 3 million copies and hardcore already sold 2 million copies. It definitely means something that two albums that came out 17 and 22 years ago rocket up into the current sales/streaming chart. They don’t need to Ben on billboard again- been there, somebody that. Been certified.. solidified already. The simple fact these albums are back on iTunes is HUGE and for sure shows impact because that is not a common thing. Sit your hating self down. Lol you stay hating
BLOOP! @SMH
LOL, blah blah blah, save your essays. The truth is the truth & I said what I said. Itunes positions mean nothing if it doesn’t translate into a Billboard 200 chart entry. Now BLOOP that.
Don’t be mad honey, I mean this isn’t a Beyonce post so I’m not sure why you’re seethings seaping over. But I said what I said, a 20 year old album charting on iTunes is AMAZING. Only an idiot would say otherwise.
LOL! And… BLOOP again @SMH
@Rey she stans Nicki Minaj, we know where her musical knowledge begins and ends
Omg people Glitter is not an ALBUM! It is a SOUNDTRACK!!!
no its actually an album love.
Mariah herself said that its a soundtrack love.
@gina it’s still an album. The Bodyguard was a soundtrack and won “ALBUM of the year” at the Grammys. It’s all her as lead vocalist on every track. It’s an album that’s a soundtrack to her movie.
Glitter was a great album especially her remakes of “I Didn’t Mean To Turn You On” and ‘ Don’t Stop (Funkin’ For Jamaica)”
Amazing album!!!!
I wish There For Me was on this album. That was my favorite song from her during this era.
There for me is a classic., it was recorderd for rianbow and added to the never too far/hero medley bsaide.. but there for me is still one of her best songs/vocals ever!!
Yea I bought the Hero Medley single from Coconuts in 2001 just to hear There For Me. Man time flew by.
What? Why exactly? Amazing. Although nowadays sales are so poor that I suppose any organized movement pays off these days. But still amazing. Vocals there and experimentation was soooo good.
Yes, I love that she experimented here. She said she was such a fan of the work Janet jackson did with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis that she wanted them for this project (along with a fav of mine, Bliss from rainbow). Of all albums this was her most risqué
the album came out on 9/11 which im sure had a big deal to due with sales results.
im
I always loved this album and the movie, I never understood the bad critics so it’s very funny to watch this now.
Awesome
When someone figures out what spurred these sales update us; I’m curious as hell.
Btw, Loverboy was and still IS a jam!
It’s been discounted to $4.99 cents. Not sure if it’s temporary or permanent.
I bought it last month before the campaign and it was still £4.99
It’s now #1 on iTunes! Lead The Way is one of the best vocals you’ll ever hear #Purchased!
Number 1 now.
#justice is served
I thought both these songs where really good! Mariah has always givin’ it to us!!!! No matter what the “kids” say now!!!! 😉
