Mariah Carey Covers Cosmopolitan / Talks Career, THAT New Year’s Performance, & More

Published: Tuesday 9th Jul 2019 by Sam

As viral moments ago, Mariah Carey is unrivalled.

Indeed, from the “I don’t know her” to the #BottleTopChallenge that took the net by storm this weekend, Mimi certainly knows how to get folk talking.

She’s also no stranger to occasionally going viral for the wrong reasons – case in point her New Year’s Eve 2016 audio malfunction.

In a fresh interview feature with Cosmopolitan (which she covers above), the diva supreme seems to be taking both the good and not so good (of her life more broadly) in her stride.

Her reflective words below…

On The NYE Fiasco:

“If people think that’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to me, then first of all, they haven’t studied my career well enough. After what I’ve been through, who really gives a sh*t if my monitor broke, fell off, came out of my ears because the stupid robe was too loose? These things happen and it’s over. My true fans stick with me, and the rest of the people will get over it.”

On How Getting A Big Break Then & Now Are Different:

“They have no idea what I went through as a child to even get to be an 18-year-old girl with a record deal. This was before you could just go on YouTube and sing.”

[Growing up biracial – mix of African-American, Venezuelan, and Irish – with financial hardship and divorced parents], “people didn’t understand who I was, what I was, my ethnicity, the fact that we didn’t have money.”

On Being Married To Tommy Mottola – Who Was 20 Years Her Senior:

“You might want to picture a child bride. There was a conscious effort to keep me as this all-American, whatever that means, girl. It was very controlled. There was no freedom for me as a human being. It was almost like being a prisoner.”

On Her Alleged Preference For Younger Men:

“I haven’t had that many, but there has been a variety pack. I’ve only been with five people in my life, so I’m kind of a prude, honestly, compared to most others in the field.”

On Songwriting:

“A lot of artists say they write, but they don’t really write. No offense to anybody. That’s just what I’ve seen.”

On Today’s Style In Music:

“A lot of girls are just nude in front of everybody. No offense to them.”

Beyond being back in the studio, Mimi can be found thrilling audiences in Vegas at her ‘The Butterfly Returns’ residency.
