Beyonce has an established flair for surprises and she sprung an almighty one on the masses tonight with the announcement of a ‘Lion King’ companion album.
Christened ‘The Lion King: The Gift,’ the multi-artist LP will feature all new music from Queen Bey who curated and executive produced the project.
But that’s not all. Because ahead of its July 19th arrival, the star has premiered new song ‘Spirit.’
Written and produced by Bey alongside IIya and Labrinth, the soaring number not only appears on ‘The Gift’ but also on the official soundtrack for the movie. It’s touted as playing at a pivoting point for Nala in the film.

I agree. I think a voice with more versatility and personality would have make this song great (Mariah Carey / Toni Braxton / even Mary J. Blige). Its like someone with limited vocal range is trying to sing outside of their range when I listen to this. I love me some Bey but she does better with her own album songs rather than these soundtrack songs. I hated her song ‘Listen’ and I don’t care for this new song.

It’s ok. It’ll never be I Will Always Love You, My Heart William Go On, Can’t You Feel the Love Tonight or When You Believe. She sounds good but her emotion always seems overly frantic and forced to me. Prime Whitney/Mariah would have blown this song to the heavens
I don’t know who said her performance in Dream Girls was dead-eyed, but that’s exactly how Beyoncé comes across to me on song. She’s either Xtina-growl-shouting or Batman-underbreath-singing. The one and only song I felt her on was “My Heart Still Beats” from DC’s Survivor album.
Her high falsetto parts are not pleasing to the ear, and her lower register is not strong enough for what she’s attempting, but I love the song apart from those two things. You know who I want to hear sing this? JoJo. JoJo would TEARRR this thing up!!
I agree. Her falsetto during the bridge sounds like there was some tension. The chorus sounds like it should have been sang higher. I’m a little surprised, because knowing what she is capable of this does sound underwhelming. But when I actually think about it, nothing after her album ‘4’ Really wowed me vocally. I’ve been more captivated by production and songwriting when it comes to ‘BEYONCE’ and ‘lemonade.’ That’s why I prefer her older stuff + destiny’s Child era vocals.
Brandy has less range, but her voice gets to the listener’s heart. A God-given feat Beyoncé can’t boast. Probably because you can’t be given from God when you publicly reject Him.

It’s not mediocre. The production, choir, lyrics are A1. The only thing I could’ve requested was a big note after the bridge like any big ballad. But this song fits the tone of the movie and doesn’t overshadow the movie by being this overdone, eccentric Beyoncé song that majority of y’all wouldve dragged her for had she done that.

Also, I own Dangerously in Love, 4, her self titled album, and some tracks from B’Day. I was in high school and bought DIL the day it released. I also bought Work it Out from the Austin Powers soundtrack.

Right – when I think about ‘Smash Into You’ slayed my ENTIRE EXISTENCE I don’t get the emotion from this song on first listen. I think this will be a good song in her discography but will not be a stand out track like so many of her other vocal moments (I Care, Dangerously In Love, Halo, Speechless, RESENTMENT et al). ??♂️

I applaud Beyoncé for giving the masses a vocal moment but I feel like the production is giving me more than Beyoncé vocals. But her efforts are to be commended. Whether you like her music/persona or not, Beyonce is inarguably one of the most hard working and successful solo female acts in music history at this point. However, I dont believe her artistry, thereby her music is wasteful, meaningless, or sub par. Their are plenty of EMOTIVE vocals sprinkled throughout every Beyonce era (Speechless, Be With You, Resentment, Listen, half of I AM, I Care, Heaven, Blue etc)
Also, I dont believe she is making anything about ‘herself’ by promotimg a highly anticipated Disney film she is featured in. She was cast by them for that very reason.. to draw MASSIVE attention for this project. Beyonce is going to attract the most attention because, um, she is BEYONCE, a global superstar. A global household name. More than anyone in that cast COMBINED. That is her power. You may not like understand it or like it but it’s a reality. Her starpower does indeed affect how she is presented by the media (and how fans/haters view her), not by her own manipulation or lack of talent/success. She doesnt have to manipulate anyone to give her attention at this point in her career. So I totally dont follow that narrative.
Finally, yall seem to be trying to diminish Beyonce’s actual success over the last 15-20 years bringing up her sales or chart positions but I could have sworn Beyonce is one of the most streamed artists in the world on every platform. I could have sworn Lemonade sold extremely well for a solo artist in her 13th year of putting out solo records. Only solo artist in history to have their first 6 albums debut at No.1 She famously stated around the release of 4 she doesnt care about radio hits anymore. She never made EDM or chased a sound that would’ve ensured radio hits via Max Martin or Dr Luke when she easily could have.
