Taylor Swift’s Now Tied Madonna For Most Hot 100 Top 20 Hits Among Female Acts

Published: Thursday 29th Aug 2019 by Rashad

Madonna‘s long been regarded as the most successful female recording artist in history thanks not only to her reported 300+ million in record sales, but also a nearly unrivaled 36-year run on the Billboard charts – namely the Hot 100.

Granted, her reigns atop the Billboard 200 with 9 of her 14 studio albums are nothing to shake a stick at (placing her second among women for most career chart-toppers as Barbra Streisand leads with 11), the Queen of Pop’s truest crowning glory has come with the strides she’s made on the singles chart.  With 38 top 10 hits (12 of them hitting #1), she – as of time reported – sits in history books for having the most placements on the chart’s topmost dectet.  Other notable accomplishments include first female artist in history to have 6 (or more) #1 singles, most consecutive top 5 singles of any artist, and she was once listed as the artist who took the shortest time to amass 20 top 10 singles (a feat later surpassed by Rihanna as we reported here).

At present, Madge stands to see another member of the new school – Taylor Swift – break another of her longstanding records:  most top 20 singles of all time (among females).  Details inside:

As we reported here, ‘Lover’ – the title track from Swift’s latest album (released August 23) – made its inaugural impact on this week’s Hot 100 when it debuted at #19.  The impressive premiere gave the 29-year-old the 44th top 20 hit of her career, a feat no other female artist has known since M nabbed her 44th top 20 in 2012 with the Nicki Minaj-assisted ‘Gimme All Ur Lovin.’

With all of the songs from the ‘Lover’ album dominating Spotify as of time of this report it is likely one or more of them will impact next week’s refreshed Hot 100.  If and when this happens, Taylor will enter history books as the female artist with the most top 20 hits.

The new chart rules make it so easy to break records.

this isn’t fair. many of taylor’s hits aren’t even singles! streaming has just messed everything up

we’ll look back in 20 years and see how many of madonna’s 44 we remember versus how many of taylor’s 44 we remember

    • Jasmine August 29, 2019

But Madge is already forgotten though compared to her peers, no classics just stats

      • King z August 29, 2019

        Boy please

If u play the bass line alone to holiday, Vogue, or like a Virgin people instantly know who it is

Madge may not have as many classics as her 80s counterparts but I guarantee ppl know her stuff. She was a visual artist mostly, but her iconography does extend to actual music

      • Sweetnothings78 August 29, 2019

Shut TFU Madonna’s original songs will ALWAYS be regarded as classics and well played! Her first 7 albums will always have the singles played and like a virgin and like a prayer are just a stat? LOL they changed music! That’s not just a stat and will not be ‘forgotten’

You kids know nothing! Also sounds rather disrespectful to real music writing!

Taylor swift is a legend. Gosh people get called legend for having 2 successful albums, look how many successful albums taylor has.
In one day of sales, she had the biggest first week sales of the year.

Sales dont make you a legend. Quantity does not a legend make. A legend creates long lasting impact. What significant impact outside of sales has her ARTISTRY done for the industry, pop culture and the world in general? She makes generic in-the-now microwavable pop tunes and appeals to white america. That is why she sells. Nothing she’s done has inspired other artists or people to do anything different. Save it.

      • Woah Vicky August 29, 2019

That’s your opinion of a legend. A legend to me is someone who’s connected with an audience to a degree that they’ve had several successful albums.
If those reasons why the only reason why she sells, then then why is she the only one to be selling so much? Obviously she has something special, because no else has people going to the store and spending their money on.

She’s a legend, pure and simple.

      • Marco August 30, 2019

I agree with sales not making you a legend. It goes along the line of a president winning bigger votes, not necessarily making him the best public official there is.

  5. The Truth August 29, 2019

I miss pre-reputation Taylor 🙁 This new album sounds rushed. If I wanted cheesy, I’d buy a box of Kraft macaroni and cheese.

    Sigh…

Sidenote: why did she not do any songs with Max Martin? HE is the magic behind her best pop songs.

  6. Jasmine August 29, 2019

So nicki Minaj with over 100 entries only has 35, I swear that girl is a fraud, I hate her

    • King z August 29, 2019

And I’m sure she was probably featured on 50% or more of those 35 lol

    • SMH August 29, 2019

Lol, Nicki has y’all pressed af, always on your minds 24/7. Poor things.

Taylor swift brought country music to the forefront when she won album of the year for fearless back in 2010.
Country music was literally dying but it was saved thanks to Taylor swift and her impact.

Her album are events. Who is selling one million in a week? Only adele.

Let’s not forget she has won album of the year at the Grammys twice. She has also won an Emmy.
She has 2 golden globe nominations also.

      • Memo August 30, 2019

The delusion. None of Taylor’s country album have matched the sales of Carrie Underwood’s ”Some hearts.” Let’s not act like Taylor revived country music because the one who did was Carrie.

  8. Clarkson August 29, 2019

Sales don’t make u are legend

It’s only a beyonce fan that will say something like this. So fraudulent

Taylor swift has quality. She has songs that will stand the test of time

    Style
    Bad blood
    Blank space
    Shake it off
We are never ever getting back together
    Mean
    Delicate
    You belong with me.
    Safe and sound

      Love story!

  9. Gurlwepa99 August 29, 2019

Congratulations Taylor!! Beyonce fans are a bunch of jealous bees. Beyonce wishes she can pull these numbers and record sales. Back to Lover.

Multiple profiles for multiple personalities. Taylor reminds me of what Britney was and could have been. I believe that she will age well! She will be a pop legend. Waiting on her conscious political album because we all need some substance and the sells will drop but atleast she will be acclaimed as a legend should be.

    Congrats Queen Taylor Swift💕💕💕
Album “Lover” is lit 🔥 I love it. It can still sell more than 1 million. Per Hits daily double It already sold 744k in 5 days

Meanwhile, Following Camila Cabello’s first-ever live performance of “Senorita” with Shawn Mendes on the MTV VMAs (where she snagged two moonmen), her team was spotted celebrating the 7x-platinum certification of her 2017 smash “Havana” (Epic)

  12. Caleb August 29, 2019

Back in the day a song had to be a single to even chart on the hot 100. Every Madonna song to hit the top 20 was released as a single. Her album tracks weren’t eligible.

  13. Danny Bey August 29, 2019

You mad ho*s bringing up Beyoncé like that’s the only b*tch I stan and like I’m mad or something. When in actuality I also stan MJ, Whitney, Janet, Usher and Mariah who are the real heavy hitters of sales. And I stan them all including Beyoncé for their TALENT. NOT what they sell. Try another narrative. I said what I said and what I said was facts af 100 maddoggies lol

    • Fancy BISH August 29, 2019

      lmao 🤣

  14. Gary R. August 31, 2019

Shouldn’t it be officially released singles?! Not just songs that are streamed a bazillion times by 13 year olds. Artists from the era when Madonna started didn’t have the luxury of having every song from their new album being streamed. Back in those days you would listen to your new album over and over but no one kept track of how many times you listened to it. It doesn’t seem right today that when people are listening to their new album each song goes onto the charts, it should only be officially released singles. Also, while I’m here, doing a 15 second guest rap on someone else’s song should not count as a charted single for the guest rapper! One time I read Nicki Minaj has 93 charted singles…I thought to myself that is impossible until I found out that all her guest raps are treated as “her” single too. The criteria these days for charts is stupifying!
