Uncovering the identities of secret admirers stood as a staple of many 90s talk shows, and would see unsuspecting guests forced to figure out which of their friends or acquaintances had developed a crush on them.
Alas, that format took a turn for the deadly on March 6th 1995 when a man named Jonathan Schmitz was invited on The Jenny Jones Show after learning that his secret admirer wanted to use the show to declare their love for him.
Believing it was a woman, Schmitz agreed to appear on the show only to discover that the admirer was a man named Scott Amedure.
Amedure was found dead days later.
His murderer? Schmitz.
Evidence presented in the murder trial suggested that Jonathan- who identified as heterosexual- was stunned to learn that Amedure had fallen in love with him but went out drinking with him hours after they finished taping their appearance on the show.
A sexual encounter is said to have taken place.
Days later, Amedure is said to have left a suggestive note in Schmitz’s house. A note, which is said to have shaken him so badly that he withdrew money from the bank, bought a shotgun and drove to his house to ask him what he meant by it.
Once there, he shot his admirer twice and called 911 to confess to the murder.
He was convicted of second-degree murder.
